Apollo appoints ex-Goodyear OE specialist as senior vice president for North America

Apollo Tyres has appointed Steven Smidlein as the senior vice president for North America. This new role will be based in the firm’s New Jersey office and will see Smidlein reporting to Neeraj Kanwar, vice chairman and managing director, Apollo Tyres Ltd. An OE specialist, with previous experience at Goodyear, Steven Smidlein has spent most of his career working in various executive roles for car makers such as Chrysler, Honda and Accura in the US. According to the Apollo, Smidlein’s latest role sees him take responsibility for ”building the brand and sales in North America for both, Apollo and Vredestein”.

New appointment strengthens Glass’s valuation team

David Hill has been appointed to the role of commercial vehicle editor to further strengthen the valuations team at Glass’s.

He has more than 30 years’ experience in the motor industry, being part of the sales department at dealerships selling LCVs and HGVs for manufacturers including Ford, Renault, LDV, and Isuzu Trucks. He was also senior editor of CAP Red Book and, most recently, worked for CDL on data products.

Magna Tyres Group has appointed Christophe Cantou as sales manager for the region South France. Cantou has over 15 years of sales experience in the tyre industry and has worked for various well-known tyre companies. He will be working alongside Peter Schreudering and focus on the southern part of the country.

Continental names new UK passenger sales director

Continental Tyre Group Ltd has appointed a new passenger sales director to take over from Phil Scanlan, who retires from the company after 30 years.

Klaus Fremenau has been with Continental for 20 years, starting at Uniroyal after graduating with a university degree. He brings with him extensive experience, with previous roles at Continental Germany such as regional sales manager and his previous position as sales director for car dealer and fleet business.

IMI offers apprenticeship targets inquiry assistance

Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) is offering to help the Inquiry into the Government’s 2020 apprentices target, announced by the Sub-Committee on Education, Skills and the Economy. Steve Nash, CEO of the IMI, which champions the cause of apprentices, has written to the Chair of the Sub-Committee offering its extensive research into the issue. The IMI reports that the industry it represents needs 12,000 apprentices a year to stand still.

Up to 5000 automotive job vacancies in the UK

There could be as many as 5,000 job vacancies in the UK automotive industry due to a skills shortage affecting the sector, according to a new report published by the Automotive Council.

The report, which was developed by automotive industry consultants SMMT Industry Forum on behalf of the Automotive Industrial Partnership, surveys a range of British-based automotive firms, from vehicle manufacturers to component suppliers, to identify the areas of employment most difficult to recruit, and provide an important means for industry and government to tackle the skills issue. Around 19 per cent of the unfilled vacancies cited in the report are identified as ‘critical’ and having a significant impact on company operations.

Conti looks to the future with Trend Antenna in Frankfurt

Hessian State Secretary Mathias Samson, opened Continental AG’s research workshop in the House of Logistics and Mobility (HOLM) in Frankfurt am Main on 2 February. The so-called “Trend Antenna” event sees students and academics work with Continental for the purpose of developing the future of mobility and research software technologies and algorithms. The event is the fourth institution of its kind at Continental, after Regensburg, Shanghai and Guadalajara (Mexico). A total of around 170 students from around 10 different disciplines work with Continental at the Trend Antennas.

Alexej von Bagh is to take over the responsibility for global Process development at Nokian Tyres as of 1 April 2016. Mr von Bagh will have responsibility for the overall process architecture and process development. Mr von Bagh reports to the president and CEO. “Alexej has been a strong driver in Vianor’s success.
