Motaquip: Poor Quality Wheel Bearings ‘Threaten UK Aftermarket’

Low cost and counterfeit wheel bearings are pouring into the UK market, posing a direct threat to motorists, Motaquip has warned. Motaquip, one of the UK’s leading aftermarket suppliers, singled out Far Eastern suppliers of low cost wheel bearing kits for criticism saying: they fail to meet Original Equipment (OE) or matching quality specification.

The non-OE wheel bearings issue surrounds Far Eastern wheel bearing kit imports which feature ball bearings rather than the newer taper roller technology. Increasingly complex modern vehicles require that safety critical parts such as wheel bearing kits meet Original Equipment (OE) or matching quality specification. In order to reduce costs, parts sourced from the Far East often use fewer balls than the OE part, which leaves them vulnerable to breakage, disintegration, collapse or locking when in use – with potentially devastating consequences.

Automechanika Canada’s Speakers, Seminars Set

Automechanika Canada, which takes place June 19-21, at the International Centre in Toronto, will offer seminars designed to help aftermarket professionals succeed in these changing times. Highlighting the program are a keynote address by Bob Greenwood, an award-winning automotive aftermarket industry expert; seven industry seminars; and nine educational courses.

Additionally, the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association (APRA) and the Ontario Tire Dealers Association (OTDA), two of the show’s industry partners, will contribute to the seminar program, and OTDA will sponsor the exclusive Tire & Wheel Pavilion within Automechanika Canada.

New Pricing Arrangement for Compomotive Products

Wolverhampton based Components Automotives has notified its customers that, as of April 14, the prices for all Compomotive three-piece wheels and three piece rim parts will be on application only. The company states that this decision has been taken due to the extensive price increases it has just received from its rim supplier and the ever-decreasing value of the British pound against the euro. All orders for three-piece wheels and outer & inner rims will be costed at the time of enquiry, the company adds, and any special prices or discounts previously agreed will no longer be applicable.

The company expresses its apologies in announcing these changes, and further apologies for any inconvenience this has caused.

CST wins Quality Performance Award

Continental Sime Tyre (CST) received its second straight Outstanding Quality Performance Award from Toyota’s Assembly Services Sdn. Bhd. on 31st March 2008. The award for 2007 was presented at the 13th Toyota Suppliers’ Conference held at the Bluewave Hotel in Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia.

The award was presented for tyres supplied by CST’s Alor Star plant for 3 Toyota models, i.e. Toyota Innova, Hilux Single Cab and Fortuner. The four criteria for selection were:

Tyre Industry Demand Having Strong Environmental Impact in China

The supply of rubber to feed China’s booming tyre industry is taking its toll on the environment, report ecologists. According to one report, China produced 330 million tyres in 2007, and to cater to this demand, China is seeking to expand its natural rubber output, which China Rubber Industry Association forecasts will grow by 30 per cent to 780,000 tonnes by 2010. In some areas this growth, however, is coming at the expense of the natural ecosystem.

And Bridgestone adds that tackling the toughest terrain requires the right tyre – and that is why Bridgestone-brand Dueler tyres have been selected as an OE option for the North American market versions of the latest model.

In North America the newly-styled, more-powerful, seventh-generation 2008 Toyota Land Cruiser is available with Bridgestone Dueler H/T D684 II tyres in size P285/60R18 114V. The all-season tyre, comments the tyre major, is ideal for adventuring off-road, yet is quiet and comfortable on-highway. Bridgestone adds that this makes for a performance combination particularly suited to Toyota’s upscale, go-anywhere SUV.

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has been recognized as one of America’s most trustworthy companies by Audit Integrity Inc. and Forbes magazine. Goodyear ranked sixth on the magazine’s second annual listing of companies with market capitalization of $5 billion or more, which was released at www.forbes.com on March 27. The list is based on Audit Integrity’s independent research and evaluation of the transparency, reliability and risks of corporate accounting and governance practices.

“This recognition is very meaningful,” said Robert J. Keegan, Goodyear chairman and chief executive officer. “We have worked hard over the past few years to build a world-class organization with a focus on both corporate accounting and governance,” he added.

Electrical Retailer Switches on to Michelin Contract

Michelin UK reports it has won a major contract to supply tyres to the distribution fleet used by electrical retailer Comet, which is operated by supply chain solutions specialist Wincanton. The new contract has been set-up on a ‘pence per kilometre’ (PPK) basis and replaces a previous ‘pay as you go’ agreement with another manufacturer. It will be supported by ATS Euromaster’s fleet of 1,200 mobile service vehicles which will be used to fit tyres at Wincanton and Comet’s own distribution depots, coupled with the provision of 24/7 emergency roadside assistance in the event of a tyre-related breakdown.

Israeli Green Police Take Legal Action Against Tyre Businesses

The Ministry of Environmental Protection reports that it has initiated administrative enforcement procedures against tyre repair shops, garages and spare parts warehouses for improper storage of tyres, in contravention of the provisions of the Tire Disposal and Recycling Law, 2007. The ministry will continue to follow up on the implementation of the law in these establishments and will initiate additional enforcement measures if necessary.

Bosal Publishes New Exhaust Catalogue

The latest edition of Bosal UK’s exhaust catalogue has been launched with a range of exhaust systems and cats for over 98 per cent of the European car parc, making it the most comprehensive in the motor trade. The 1,000 page catalogue contains details of over 4,700 fully type-approved systems, over 300 of which are new from the last edition. There are listings for almost 600 new exhaust parts, including pipes, silencers, mountings and accessories and 138 new catalytic converters plus details of development items due for release during the two-year life of the new catalogue.

Parker Hannifin Releases New Gen Nitrogen Inflator

The Process Filtration division of Parker Hannifin, the world’s largest manufacturer of motion and control technologies, has launched the latest version of its TyreSaver self-contained nitrogen generation system. The benefits of substituting air with nitrogen within a vehicle’s tyre are well known and use of the gas can improve both vehicle safety and efficiency. The TyreSaver system works by separating nitrogen and oxygen from the atmosphere by means of a compressor and specially developed hollow fibre membrane filters. The system is compact, simple to use and energy efficient as it needs only a low operating pressure for the membrane filters to function effectively. Furthermore, as there are no moving parts TyreSaver is said to be extremely reliable and requires only minimal maintenance.
