OTR’s TotalTyreLogic Proving Popular in Scotland

Quarrying TotalTyreLogic, OTR Tyre’s ‘cradle to grave’ earthmover tyre management system, is said to be making a big impact in Scotland’s quarrying industry, and is already in use in more than 30 quarries there. The company reports that major quarrying groups are appreciating the ‘total’ service offered from OTR – from sourcing and supply of tyres through retreading to disposal and replacement.

TotalTyreLogic tracks, monitors and manages the condition of tyres, encompassing site surveys and detailed recommendations of operational practices, to aid budgeting and give visible asset management. Tyre data is correlated by OTR’s Tyre Service Engineers through on-site visits and recorded into hand held organisers before being downloaded directly to bespoke software for interpretation and analysis. The centralised database software then collates the information, which includes tyre manufacturer, tyre type, tread pattern plus wear and repair details, for each OTR customer.

SPR licensees begin production

It is almost 20 years since the Rösler Group bought the Schelkmann patents for the pre-cured retreading of OTR tyres. Today this German company has reached a position on the European and global retreading market where the Schelkmann procedure is itself used as a product, a product that appears to be in strong demand. During the past two years the Rösler Group has emphasised the commercialisation of Schelkmann licenses, obviously a good means of generating cash through licence fees, but also very attractive to the German group; together with the licence comes a production plant using Rösler technology and a subsequent demand for Rösler pre-cured OTR treads. As of March there are six Schelkmann production entities operating worldwide, one of which is Rösler’s model plant in Dortmund, the company’s location in Western Germany.

Titan to Increase Giant OTR and Agricultural Tyre Capacity

Production of giant OTR tyres at Titan International is set to markedly increase, says company chairman and CEO Maurice M. Taylor Jr. At a speech given to the Tire Industry Association in Hawaii on February 22 Taylor said that the company expects to produce more than twice as many giant OTR tyres as previously estimated.

Foundation Stone Laid for New Apollo OTR Plant

Yet another new chapter in the history of Apollo Tyre’s impressive growth was written on February 25 at a foundation stone laying ceremony for the company’s new OTR tyre production facility. The construction of this new plant marks Apollo’s entry into the OTR tyre segment. Presiding over the auspicious occasion at Limda, in India’s Gujarat state, was company chairman and managing director Onkar S Kanwar.

The OTR facility will be ready for production within the next 15 months and will have an initial capacity of 10 tonnes per day, to be increased to 60 tonnes a day over a three-year period. Sizes produced at the Limda plant will start at 25-inch and diameters up to 57-inch are planned. The first phase of development will require an investment of about Rs 1 billion (£12.7 million), and this money will go towards establishing facilities primarily for the production of cross-ply OTR tyres. Additional investments will be made for radial production.

GPX To Close Canada Factory

OTR, industrial and specialty tyre manufacturer GPX International Tire Corporation has disclosed its intention to cease operations at its solid tyre production facility in Mississauga, Canada and “consolidate its solid tyre manufacturing operations in Gorham, Maine and Xingtai, China.” This planned closure and consolidation is part of the company’s overall plan to rationalise its wholly owned manufacturing facilities, said GPX in a statement. These plans will see North American operations focusing on specialty products whilst the plant in China will produce the “longer run commodity type” products.

CMA States its Case on Duty Investigation

Double Coin/CMA issued the following statement regarding the preliminary determination of the US Department of Commerce in its the investigation of potential countervailing/anti-dumping of OTR tyres manufactured in China.

“Double Coin/CMA feels strongly against the recent ruling as it pertains to their Radial OTR products. We have been involved in the investigation since its inception, presenting data as a manufacturer and an importer of record to the ITC/DOC. We did so because Double Coin adamantly knew that it does not dump product into the US or any country. We knew the facts would be revealed. After the ITC’s initial phase of investigation, Double Coin was not selected as a mandatory organisation to be reviewed by the DOC.

CIMA Impianti: From Italy to the World

Today, when we speak of and write about the European retreading market, it is all too often the major material suppliers or retreaders we refer to, even though machinery and equipment manufacturers are equally core to the quality of the retreading process and the finished product the end consumer finally receives. A company that – over the course of 50 years – has evolved into a prominent player in the European retreading business is Italy’s CIMA Impianti. And while achieving this, the manufacturer of vulcanising presses and moulds has also managed to secure a foothold in the new tyre industry with its products. Thus for many years CIMA has also supplied new tyre manufacturers. A third avenue for sales comes from the company’s supply of ancillary equipment for tyre retreading.

2007 a Strong Year For Bridgestone, 2008 to be Tougher

Full year 2007 financial results for Bridgestone Corporation were released on January 19, and these figures paint a picture of a healthy year’s trading. Net sales increased 13 per cent to 3,390.2 billion yen (£16.118 billion), and operating income jumped 31 per cent, or 59 billion yen (£280.5 million), to 249.9 billion yen (£1.19 billion). Net income, at 131.6 billion yen (£625.65 million), showed a 55 per cent increase on 2006 results.

Bridgestone reports that, amidst an environment of increasing raw material costs, a slowing US economy, recovering Japanese and European economies and economic growth in Asia, Bridgestone group companies managed to increase production capacity in strategic product lines while benefiting from strengths in research and development. Furthermore, Bridgestone adds the companies “also maintained group-wide efforts to enhance their portfolio of highly competitive products and businesses despite an increasingly difficult business environment caused by changes in the global structure of demand and competition.”

Titan’s First 63-OTR Tyre Ready

Less than a year after committing itself to developing giant 63-inch radial tyres, Titan Tire has manufactured the company’s first prototype specimen at its Ohio facility. Production examples are expected to be ready for shipping to mines within 60 to 90 days.

“This project has been an unbelievable experience for a large group of Titan employees – starting with myself,” said Titan chairman and CEO Maurice M. Taylor Jr. “I know a lot of people think I’m a little different, and that’s fine, but I’m very lucky to have a great team. Titan has some of the best employees in this business and they proved it today by producing this tyre in seven months, starting from scratch. A site that used to be a soybean field is now the beginning of a state-of-the-art giant tyre facility. In addition to developing this 63-inch tyre, Titan has also filed for a patent on the new construction used in this design that will improve tyres and lower cost to manufacture.”

Tyrexpo Africa Exhibitor Numbers Up 8% for 2008 Show

It is now less than a month before Tyrexpo Africa 2008 gets underway in Johannesburg, and recent figures tell of an even healthier show than the debut exhibition in 2006. Exhibition floor space at the Sandton Convention Centre has increased by 10 per cent for this year’s event, and exhibitor numbers are up 8 per cent. These exhibitors are reported to be coming from 20 different countries, with 37 Chinese companies and 13 from India signed up. Home market companies will dominate the show, however, with firms from South Africa representing 38 per cent of all exhibitors.

The influence of Chinese and Indian tyre manufacturers on the South African market for OTR tyres is tipped to balloon this year, and these companies will have a highly visible presence at Tyrexpo Africa 2008. Show organiser, ECI International, believes that China and India’s strong participation in the exhibition signals an aggressive drive to achieve greater market share in the lucrative African mining sector.

Double Coin Joins TRIB

Double Coin has joined the Tire Retread & Repair Information Bureau (TRIB), bringing TRIB’s membership to 480 members in 48 countries. Double Coin has joined under the banner of China Manufacturer’s Alliance (CMA), the US cooperative that names a number of Chinese brands within its ranks.

“TRIB continues to grow internationally as more and more companies in the new tyre and retread industries throughout the world realize that TRIB is the only international retread industry association representing new tire manufacturers, retreaders and tyre repair companies,” said Harvey Brodsky, TRIB’s Managing Director.

Goodway: Strong and Growing Profits

Malaysia’s Goodway Integrated Industries is not just a supplier of tread rubber and rubber compounds for the global retreading industry – the company also manufactures technical rubber compounds. Furthermore, the Malaysian conglomerate is viewed as one of the most expansive companies in the southeast Asian retreading industry, and for a number of years has produced its own retreaded tyres – products that have given the firm a domestic retreading market share of about 75 per cent. And Goodway’s growth within the region continues to this day; in 2005, Goodway acquired the leading Malaysian market retreader, Big Wheel. Through this purchase Goodway became a major customer to its own products and also entered the OTR tyre retreading industry.

Advanced ID Announces Several New Innovations

The UK based subsidiary of Advanced ID Corporation, Pneu-Logic Ltd., has ventured further into the tyre industry through its signing of an initial contract to supply data capture tools to French firm Electronic Data Process (EDP). The initial 2008 contract, valued at US$150,000, will see the data capture tools integrated with EDP’s tyre management software in order to provide what Advanced ID is calling a “complete tyre management solution.”

EDP managing director, Mr. Jean-Luc Giusti, commented: “We continue to experience strong growth in European sales of our Fleet Check software solutions and Pneu-Logic tools. Based on this progress, we plan for EDP to expand its presence into the United States in 2008 in an effort to market our combined tyre products offering to the many large global tyre manufacturers and service providers located in the country.” Quoting statistics released by Tire Review magazine, Advanced ID reports that the US market for all medium and light trucks in 2006 was in excess of 77 million units. The total US and European market approaches $10 billion annually.

US Firm Anticipates $100m OTR Exports to Asia – With Govt Help

Returning to our news pages once again is American Tire Corporation (ATC), the company recently noted for announcing the construction of a half-billion dollar OTR tyre plant in the US, a substantial corporate acquisition offer from an anonymous party – which ATC turned down, and, most recently the announcement of no price increases for 2008. The latest news from the enigmatic manufacturer is that its Colorado brand OTR tyres have been introduced into the Asian market.

OTR Tyre Duties “Level the Playing Field” – USW

The United Steelworkers has reacted positively to the US Department of Commerce’s preliminary decision to impose antidumping duties on OTR tyre imports from China. In a statement released by the union group, USW International president Leo Gerard said that the “the decision will help level the playing field for US workers by requiring Chinese tyre imports to be priced fairly.”

At present four individual manufacturers have been investigated by US authorities, resulting in the introduction of duties ranging between 11 and 52 per cent. Other companies penalised with individual rates are subject to a margin reflecting the weighted average of individual rates or 25 per cent – whichever is higher. Those companies ineligible for individual rates must pay a duty of 210 per cent.
