Bridgestone to Raise Japan Market Tyre Prices

As of September 1 prices for Bridgestone tyres, tubes and flaps sold in the Japan replacement market will increase, the company announced on June 26. The new pricing structure applies to both summer and winter tyres. Bridgestone adds that it will also ask original equipment manufacturers for significant increases in their tyre prices.

Specific replacement market price increases include five per cent for passenger car and light truck tyres, seven per cent for truck and bus tyres, per cent for OTR tyres, between seven and ten per cent for industrial vehicle tyres, three to ten per cent for motorcycle tyres, seven per cent for other kinds of tyres, and ten per cent for tubes and flaps.

Goodyear and Agricultural University Create Innovation Award

Goodyear has collaborated with Shropshire-based Harper Adams University in introducing an award for agricultural innovation. Having provided high performance tyres to the agricultural sector in the UK for 70 years, Goodyear have been engaged with new technology in the sector for some time, making them perhaps the most appropriate company to present such an award.

The award has been introduced to provide a suitable showcase for the knowledge and development of Britons in agriculture, and is looking to find the 2008 Goodyear Farming Innovator. The prize, which will include £3,500-worth of Goodyear farm tyres, is set to be awarded by Harper Adams from a shortlist of three contenders chosen by Goodyear from entries on the mygoodyear website.

Travelling the Road to Off-Road Success

In the last decade or so the off-road tyre market has seen a name appear, seemingly out of nowhere, and grow to become a significant player in many markets, particularly in Europe. That name is BKT, or Balkrishna Tyres. The Indian company, flagship business of the large Siyaram Poddar Group, has only been producing tyres for two decades and exporting them for little more than one decade. Yet in a short span of time – between the 2000/01 and 2007/08 financial years, BKT’s annual sales have rocketed from US$8 million to more than $250 million. These are results many competitors can only dream of, but the company still holds even greater ambitions.

“Our vision is to obtain global leadership in off highway tyre solutions,” stated Arvind Poddar – vice chairman and managing director, Siyaram Poddar Group, at the Reifen Essen Exhibition. “I’m sure we will make it possible in the shortest possible time.” To achieve this, explains Mr. Poddar, the company has set itself the goal of maintaining its current growth rate of 30 to 35 per cent. This means sales of $325 million in financial year 2008/09.

Aeolus Placing a Focus upon Quality

Originally established by the Chinese government as an OTR manufacturer, Aeolus Tyre Co. Ltd. has, in its 43 years, become one of China’s top ten tyre producers. The company currently specialises in truck and earthmover tyres, manufactured at its 640,000 square metre factory in central China. Soon a second facility will also enter service. At the Reifen exhibition T&A spoke with company Europe Division Manager Mr. Cuiqiang Fu and vice general manager and chief engineer Mr. Yaoling Feng about the direction Aeolus is taking as a company and as a brand.

“Of greatest importance for Aeolus is an emphasis on quality, we always lay an emphasis on quality and technology,” states Mr. Feng. He notes that this focus lies at the heart of the company’s success. “The most important thing for management level at Aeolus is quality and improving the mindset of employees. All Aeolus employees know this brand and the factory would not exist without the quality of our product; all that Aeolus is today is due to that.”

American Tire Corporation to Hold Goodyear Acquisition Lectures

It appears American Tire Corporation (ATC) still holds a strong interest in acquiring the Goodyear OTR tyre facility in Kansas, USA. To follow on from the letter sent to Goodyear regarding this on April 21, ATC is organising a number of information events and has invited a number of senior Goodyear exports to speak at these. These speeches are due to be held at the ATC facility in California on June 23 and “thereafter”, a press release from ATC states.

New Facility Ensures Room for Growth at Inter-Sprint

The largest importer and exporter of passenger car tyres in Europe is Inter-Sprint. The Dutch company has approximately 250 permanent employees and growth in recent years had made the construction of a second premises in the town of Moerdijk necessary – the original site at Heinenoord, near Rotterdam, lacked sufficient space for adequate expansion. At the new site Inter-Sprint has the room it needs to develop a brand new 68,000 square metre facility, which it will do in phases. Significant extensions are planned for 2009.

Inter-Sprint is able to offer its customers a huge range of products that includes the major ‘A’ brands plus numerous private labels, including Milestone, Euro Tyfoon, Mastersteel, Roadhog and Meteor. The company also stocks a number of exclusive labels, amongst them the Viking brand of summer and winter pcr and lcv tyres, produced by Continental and exclusively distributed by Inter-Sprint in the Netherlands and several other European markets.

SDS Systemtechnik Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary

One of the leading manufacturers of systems for non-destructive tyre testing based on Interferometric Shearography, SDS Systemtechnik of Calw, Germany is celebrating 10 years in business this year. Since its foundation in 1998, the company has grown steadily. Starting with a staff of 10, Stefan Dengler’s original tyre-testing mechanism – built in the early 1990s – was used as the basis for serial-built machines of greater complexity. At the end of 2007, the number of installations had increased to over 300 with 20 employees, representatives across the globe and a new production hall in Calw.

In addition to the 10-year growth of the company, SDS has taken great pains to remain at the technological forefront of the industry. The organisation has optimised existing installations, bringing the latest technology to tyre testing machinery, providing up-to-date conditions in which tyres can be put through their paces. The company has developed its computer and laser technology, successfully applying for a range of patents and pushing forwards the quality and performance of its machinery.

Bandengroothandel Mast: Heavy Tyre Development

Netherlands based industrial tyre specialist Bandengroothandel Mast placed a particular emphasis upon its expanded range of very large, heavy tyres for port and quarry duties at Reifen 2008. A key product on display was the large industrial tyre from Tianli, the HarbourMaster. This item, says Mast, attracted much attention from visitors at the show. Company director, Sander Mast, stated: “During the past eighteen months we have extensively increased our activity within the large industrial sector of the market and can provide a very flexible and diverse selection of large patterns and sizes for busy port and quarry and mining environments. The Tianli HarbourMaster is a specialist harbour tyre complete with an L5 compound and extra deep tread which has already been very well received around the world in busy port working environments.”

Belshina to Increase Output by 7%

A more efficient use of production capacity should see tyre output increase by 7 per cent this year at Belshina. The Belarus based company is reported to be planning an upgrade of its existing processing lines and the introduction of a new tyre assembly system. Its output of OTR tyres is also set to expand following the commissioning of an OTR radial assembly system supplied by the VMI Group. The system can accommodate tyres between sizes 17.5 R25 and 24.0 R35, although it will be principally used for manufacturing 21.0 R35 and 24.0 R35 size tyres suitable for rigid dumper applications. Belshina will reportedly increase output to just under 28,500 units per year, with 37 new sizes and types introduced by 2010.

Michelin North America to Invest $90M in Lexington Facility

A US$90 million investment is planned for Michelin North America’s facility in Lexington, South Carolina. The additional capital will be used to upgrade plant equipment and expand capacity at the site’s passenger car and OTR tyre factories. The news was announced by the company during a ceremony held in the region on June 19, at which it thanked local public officials and development agencies for their support of Michelin’s continued growth in Lexington.

“Lexington has been a great place for Michelin to produce some of the best tyres in the world,” said Jim Micali, chairman and president, Michelin North America, Inc. “And, we hope that Michelin has been equally good for Lexington County. We especially thank the South Carolina Department of Commerce and the chairman and members of the Lexington County Council, without whose support this investment would not be possible. Their efforts directly impact Michelin’s ability to expand manufacturing at this site and to continue to provide quality jobs in Lexington.”

Tech International Promotes OTR Manager

Ron Reiring has been promoted to Tech International’s OTR sales manager for North America. His new responsibilities will include developing new OTR sales opportunities for tire repairs and OTR equipment within the US, Canada and Mexico while providing support to Tech’s existing OTR customer base.

Reiring was formerly a western U.S. zone manager for the company. (Tire Review/Akron)

Tech International Names OTR Sales Manager

Tech International has promoted Ron Reiring to the post of OTR Sales Manager, North America. His responsibilities will include developing new OTR sales opportunities for Tech International’s tire repairs and OTR equipment in the US, Canada and Mexico, while providing support to Tech’s existing OTR customer base.
Reiring graduated from Fresno State University with a degree in Industrial technology and, prior to his latest promotion, he served as a Western US Zone Manager for Tech, providing sales support, service and training to Tech’s national account base.

New Improved OTR Website

OTR Tyres Ltd has upgraded and improved its website in order “to reflect the expanded range of products, services and global operations” says the Alfreton-based company. The new look site contains 140 pages with easy, “drop down” navigation to guide visitors to the relevant areas of interest.

The site is produced in-house by OTR’s dedicated, IT team and, as well as news and information, the site allows customers secure access to their TotalTyreLogic tyre management records, factory production schedule and tyre information.

TYM International Secures UK Techking OTR Franchise

TYM International recently reached a distribution agreement with Techking Tire Ltd that will see the Kings Lynn-based company distribute Techking OTR tyres in the UK. The distribution agreement follows discussions between Steve Eke (TYM International) and Techking’s Keith Johnston and James Wang in London and at the recent Essen show. Distribution of the new range will become effective in July 2008.

Commenting on the announcement, TYM International representatives said they will make sure that the UK becomes a successful market for Techking in the future: “We at TYM International are committed to offer the best possible service to each and every customer that uses the Techking product. We have a vast amount of storage space allowing us to stock more tyres and the sizes that are needed here and now in the UK market.”

Kirkby Reports Sales Growth of 20%

Kirkby Tyres and Wheels is one of Europe’s oldest established tyre and wheel wholesalers and distributors, having been in the business for roughly half a century. At Reifen 2008 the company chose to use the popular exhibition as a platform for further enhancing the company’s progression in a number of market sectors, including truck, agricultural, OTR and mining and quarry tyres. And this progress is going well; Kirkby achieved a sales growth of 20 per cent during 2007.
