JK Tyres to Supply BEML by March 2010

JK Tyres continues moving closer towards establishing an OTR tyre facility through which it will supply earthmoving equipment manufacturer Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML). It is more than two years since the tyremaker was first named as a potential supplier for BEML, yet in late April JK Tyres reaffirmed its intention remains to establish a factory in the south-western city of Mysore for this purpose.

According to reports published by Indian news sources, the company will invest a total of Rs 2.7 billion (£36.8 million) in the project, 1.2 billion (£16.3 million) in an initial phase scheduled to be completed in March 2010. This stage one operation will provide a capacity of 4,000 OTR tyres a year; output will primarily benefit BEML, who has contributed Rs 1 billion in loans towards the project.

Ruia Pledges Dunlop India Stake to Refinance Loan

It has been revealed that the Ruia Group has pledged 51 per cent of its 74.5 per cent shareholding in Dunlop India with a private bank in order to raise Rs 6 billion (US$125 million) to refinance a hedge fund debt. Although this deal was arranged with the Singapore branch of ICICI bank in October 2008, details of the transaction were only made public in April 2009.

First Green Shoots of Recovery in US EM Market

The US earthmover/off-the-road tyre market recently plateaued and is now even registering the first 'green shoots' of low level market increases, according to Luc Minguet, Michelin president earthmover and industrial tyres worldwide. According to Minguet, 2009 got off to a particularly rough start for the OTR business with OE demand plummeting 20 per cent in the first two months of the year and replacement sales down by up to 60 per cent in same period.

Boto Tyre to Build New Passenger Car Radial Factory

Shandong Wanda Boto Tyre Co., Ltd., has revealed plans to build a passenger car production facility nearby its existing tyre manufacturing complex in China. Speaking to Tyres & Accessories company representatives explained how, despite the ongoing economic downturn, Boto Tyre's board and shareholders are confident that they can sell the up to 15 million passenger car radials the new plant is scheduled to produce. Around 1 billion yuan is believed to have been earmarked for the expansion and building work is set to begin in June, with the construction project expected to conclude by the end of the year. As vice director of international trade development, Rainbow Zhao told T&A “building projects don't take very long in China.”

Goodyear Optitrac DT818 Goes High Speed

Goodyear UK is to replace 13 sizes of its DT818 A8/B radial drive farm tyre range with a high speed version in during 2009. The new version, called DT818 HIGH SPEED, means the tyres are D-rated and can operate at speeds up to 70 km/h or at inflation pressures as low as 0.6 bar. Even at lower operating speeds and for tractors that have a top speed of 30, 40 or 50km/h these tyres can carry up to 9.5 per cent more load at same inflation versus conventional DT818 tyres. Furthermore, DT818 HIGH SPEED can carry the same loads as DT818 at lower inflation pressure thereby, elongating the footprint generating more traction and pull so that work gets completed faster and at lower cost.

The upgraded tyres will be introduced to the market in two phases. The first six sizes to change, in the first half of 2009 will be:

• 650/65R42 165D/168A8
• 650/65R38 157D/160A8
• 600/65R38 153D/156A8
• 540/65R30 143D/146A8
• 540/65R28 142D/145A8
• 480/65R28 136D/139A8

Followed by a further 7 sizes in the second half of 2009:

• 540/65R38 147D/150A8
• 600/65R34 151D/154A8
• 540/65R34 145D/148A8
• 540/65R24 140D/143A8
• 480/65R24 136D/139A8

Rösler: Tyre Competence is More Than the Product

The German Rösler Group becomes more and more a supplier of a fully integrated OTR tyre management which – together with its classical core competence of retreading – is particularly developing the marketing of consulting and maintenance services in its realm. The keyword ist “Rösler 360°”. Since the beginning of last year the company summarises all its different competencies, services and products under Rösler’s “360°” product which does not leave any cost factor or operational detail aside. Since very recently, the company from Dortmund in Western Germany has yet another tool under the tyre management. The “OTR Tyre Managmenent Software” will help to optimise costs and benefits of the OTR tyre management in general as it allows to collect (perhaps be PDA), transmit (even by satellite connection) and analyse and evaluate all the tyre data available.

Italmatic Produces 51-inch Tyre Buffers

Retreading machinery maker, Italmatic, recently celebrated a success in the development of PL 80 buffers for OTR tyres. The latest technological milestone means the company’s latest (standard model) machinery is now capable reliably buffing OTR tyres in of up to 51 inches.

According to the company, Matic PL 80 makes “perfect buffing profiles both for hot retreading and for cold retreading,” but is likely to be particularly useful for retreaders who rely on both methods. The machine can be equipped also with a building group and grooving group on request.

Infinity to Show 2 New Tyres

The focal point of Infinity’s 144 square metre stand at Autopromotec 2009 will be the brand’s two new products – the new INF 059 winter van tyre and the INF 200 on-road 4×4 tyre.

The INF 059 will be available from Autumn 2009 and will feature five products ranging in size from 14 to 16 inch diameters. According to company representatives, tt will complement the existing Infinity winter tyre range and will feature a distinctive asymmetric tread pattern and a “proven winter rubber compound.”

Reports: Denman Needs Government Money or Will Close

Denman Tire says it will be forced to close its doors if it does not get government bailout dollars or purchase contracts, according to news reports out of Youngstown, Ohio. The Youngstown Vindicator reported this morning that Denman president Sandy Pensler said the federal government will pay one way or another, either by giving aid or paying unemployment benefits to affected workers.

Denman Tire has one plant and is based in Leavittsburg, Ohio, near Youngstown, and produces industrial and small OTR tires. Denman, according to reports, claims its needs an infusion of $3 million by the end of 2009 to buy new equipment or it will be forced to shut down. Denman recently laid off 85 workers, which Pensler was quoted as saying would return to work if the 90-year-old company gets needed capital. (Tire Review/Akron)

Topeka Plant Needs $38 million State Aid: Goodyear

Goodyear has told Kansas state that it needs $38 million state aid if 700 jobs are to be saved at its Topeka plant. The manufacturer says that it needs to spend $250 million to upgrade its machinery in order to build large OTR tyres. The proposal will come before the Senate after the company’s presentation on Monday to a House committee. Goodyear hopes to be added to a bill including incentives for wind and solar equipment manufacturers relocating in the state.

Goodyear has reason to be optimistic about the success of its bid: the company is Topeka’s largest employer and in 2002 it received $10 million in incentives to keep the company operating in its current location and on the condition that it would spend a further $50 million there – the company would go on to invest $124 million there.

OTR Implements New Service Management System

OTR Tyres Ltd has implemented a new Service Management System as part of its strategy to continually improve onsite service for customers. According to the company, the system provides a seamless transfer of data to and from the OTR Service Engineer and Regional Depot and gives real time information to allow accurate job management. “Travel time and distance, job start and finish information, vehicle downtime, details of work requested and work done are all recorded and used to continually improve the service offered,” said UK operations director Darren Flint.

Trelleborg to Distribute GPX Galaxy Tyres in Europe

Galaxy-branded farm, forestry, agri-industrial and and OTR will be distributed exclusively by Trelleborg Wheel Systems following an agreement between the companies to form a strategic alliance. The agreement will be effective from 1 April, and covers 25 European countries: Albania, Belgium, Belarus, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Ireland, Germany, Georgia, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Netherland, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom and Ukraine.

The range of Galaxy-branded pneumatic products covered by the agreement includes tyres for diverse and demanding applications such as: agricultural radial and bias, skid steer, forestry, lawn and garden, OTR, backhoe and telescopic handlers, as well as other agricultural and industrial segments. GPX will continue to market its range of Forklift Industrial, Inter-Modal port and full range of solid tyres independently.

Two Charged With Stealing Tyre Secrets From Goodyear

Two employees of a US company with links to a Chinese tyre manufacturer has been arrested and charged with conspiring to steal trade secrets from Goodyear Tire & Rubber. Clark Alan Roberts, 46, and Sean Edward Howley, 38, both engineers for Tennessee based Wyko Tire Technology, were arraigned before a federal magistrate in Knoxville, Tennessee on March 6, after being named in a 12-count indictment.

Yokohama Displays Wide 4×4 Range

While the Japanese tyre marque Yokohama is mainly known for its high performance road, race and rally tyres, the manufacturer also produces a large range of tyres for the off-road and SUV market. The latest crop of SUVs as well as genuine off-roaders includes the ADVAN ST and Sport – part of the manufacturer’s flagship range – the Parada Spec X for the tuner market, and the Geolander range, designed for everything from on-road and light off-road to “hardcore” OTR usage.

The UK distributor, Yokohama HPT has recently introduced several new sizes across all ranges and now lists a further eight sizes for the Geolander A/T-S from 15” to 20”, four for the Prada SpecX from 20” to 24” and four for the ADVAN Sport XL from 17” to 21”. The M/T+ is available from 15” to 17”, allowing the off-road market to fit larger tyres than traditionally possible while the H/T-S ranges from 15” to 18” and the ADVAN ST, from 17” to 24”.
