Conti Promotes ‘Sturdy’ Simex SE65

While Continental’s industrial tyre portfolio doesn’t include any own-name OTR tyres following (Czech Rubber Group CGS currently owns the rights to use this name in the OTR segment), the Conti industrial portfolio does include tyres sold under the Simex brand. According to the company, these have been specifically designed to meet the demands of the port and harbour industry and also for use on earth-moving equipment. The Simex range contains highly competitive products for the construction industry, including the Simex SE65.

Conti represntatives report that Simex demonstrates the quality of its products through the brand's strong presence in the original equipment sector and it is the number one imported tyre in the Chinese port and harbour business. In addition to tyres for port vehicles, such as reach stackers and RTGs (rubber tyre gantries) found at the port/railway/road transport interface, products for use on earth-moving equipment are particularly well-known in Europe. The Simex range boasts “extremely reliable crossply tyres” for applications in construction, mining and excavation and “low usage costs around the world.”

MAI International ‘Guarantees’ Performance

At the recent Reifen tyre show in Essen, Italian company MAI International showed examples of its Maxam range of all-steel radial OTR tyres, designed to cope with the requirements of vehicles working in today's construction, mining and civil engineering industries. And all this comes with the backing of a five-year warranty against manufacturing defects.

The range of tyres consists of a variety of sizes and tread patterns to suit different applications. For example, the MSV01 is designed primarily for on- and off-road use and its construction means minimal road noise and reduced vibration for enhanced operator comfort. The MS201 features an off-road directional tread design and it is said to offer low noise and reduced vibration too. For more demanding and winter/snow applications, the Maxam MS202 SnowXtra tyre is available in 24 and 25-inch rim sizes, suitable for loaders and articulated dumpers. The self-cleaning tread provides excellent winter traction and the cut-resistant compound prolongs service life.

Gripen UK’s First Half 2010 Sales Equal Full Year 2009 Total

Fresh from exhibiting at the Hillhead show in Buxton in June, Gripen Wheels UK director Ray Coulson has reported that the company’s rapid growth is continuing in 2010 despite the fallout of the recent recessionary period. According to Coulson, sales for the first six months of 2010 grew fast enough to equal the full year sales total the firm accrued in 2009. While your first instinct might be to suggest that such growth must have come from a low base in preceding years, when you consider that the firm has been operating in the UK for less than three years and that the whole tyre business has faced significant challenges during this period, it would be churlish not to take notice of the rate of the company’s expansion.

Asked what’s behind the recent impressive growth at Gripen, Coulson explained in a recent interview with Tyres & Accessories that increased take up of new accounts and improved product mix were at the root of the strong sales performance. Prior to 2010, Gripen UK’s was largely reliant on sales of imported budget brands in relatively small (as far as OTR products go) sizes. This year has seen the company source and deliver a complete collection of premium brand products and adjust its offering to include the larger (and more valuable) sizes of OTR product in addition to the budget and smaller sized tyres it has always sold. Together these two factors mean that, before the seventh month of 2010 is concluded, sales are already ahead of the company’s full-year 2009 result.

Scottish Coal Fits Bridgestone to its Big CATs

Scottish Coal has specified Bridgestone tyres for its 10 new Caterpillar 785D trucks as a part of its fleet modernisation programme. The trucks cost in excess of £1.25 million each and will operate at the company’s Broken Cross open cast coal mine in Ayrshire. No details of how much Scottish Coal are paying for the latest tyre supply deal have been release, but when Scottish Coal last extended its contract with Bridgestone, the firm told Tyres & Accessories that it had was seeking get every penny of value of the tyres that cost around £7000 each. Scottish Coal’s annual tyre bill is estimated to be total around £3 million.

CGS Launches New Crane Tyre, Promotes OTR Products

CGS Tyres, which produces Mitas, Cultor and Continental branded OTR and agricultural tyres at factories in the Czech Republic and Serbia, used this year's Bauma trade fair to launch a new specialist crane tyre and promote is relatively new handful OTR line.

At the centre of the company’s efforts was the launch of new Mitas branded CR-01 tyre for mobile cranes. This non-directional tread pattern comes in 445/95 R25 and is designed to reduce tyre noise when used on the road. The CR-01 is homologated according to ECE R54. According to the company, the tyre ensures reduction of fuel consumption (thanks to lower rolling resistance characteristics) and has “higher benefits than most of the tyre competitors in this segment.”

AP Loader Tyre Launch Sees Starco Move to Include Larger Range

Starco has decided to move further into the industrial segment and onto larger tyre sizes with the launch of its AP Loader XT product. In the past the company has mainly focused on handling tyres and complete wheels for the smaller end of industrial applications – but now, say company representatives “it is time to move on.” The strategy is to become an important player in the market on all industrial tyres – expanding the program from forklift and dumper tyres into the OTR segments with Starco tyres.

As the general trend in the market for OTR tyres continues to move from bias to radial products Starco has opted to develop its range of own brand Starco radial OTR tyres. The first tyres to be introduced were the treads with the most versatile applications otherwise known as the AP Loader XT – AP being short for all purpose, and XT indicating the type of tread pattern.

TMS Shown to Work with Chained Tyres

AM Bromley, which manufactures a direct tyre pressure and temperature monitoring system for the OTR tyre market called TMS, has reportedly tested its product on chained tyres run by Chilean mining service company Bailac. According to the company, the results show that TMS will work within chained tyres and the system will continue to deliver tyre pressure and temperature data irrespective of the presence of the chains.

Yokohama Tire Implements Organisational Changes

The organisational structure at Yokohama Tire Corporation has been altered following Jim MacMaster’s retirement on June 30. President and CEO of Yokohama’s US operation, Takao Oishi, has not named a direct successor for MacMaster, who served as executive vice president and COO. Instead, Dan King, previously vice president of sales and marketing, will now also be responsible for corporate strategy and planning, while Gary Nash has been promoted to vice president, off-the-road (OTR) division and Yukio Kuroda now oversees technical services and product liability.

Kirkby Announces New Additions to Alliance, BKT and Double Coin EM Range

Speke, UK-based wholesaler Kirkby Tyres has announced the latest additions to its earthmover tyre range, including new, larger and more specialist sizes under the Alliance, Double Coin and BKT brands. Alliance has released a new wide-based radial in the 650 design used on Loaders/Dozers and Graders. It is available in sizes ranging from 20.5R25 to 26.5R25, inclusive. Ilan Goldstone commented: “This tyre has been designed with a compound that has exceptional wear and an all-steel casing for superior durability and puncture resistance – it’s a very popular tyre. As well as the tyres we also have off-the-shelf EM wheels, as well as being able to provide bespoke specifications when necessary.”

North American Launch for Michelin X-Traction Range

It’s been on the market here since 2004, but for our neighbours on the other side of the pond the Michelin X-Traction earthmover tyre range is so new you can still smell the factory-fresh rubber. The first offering in the range, a size 27.00R49 tyre, will be introduced into the North American market on July 1. This initial size will be followed up by a size 24.00R35 variant in September and two 33-inch fitments next year.

Hercules International Joins ITMA

Ontario Canada-based tyre marketer and distributor Hercules Tire International has joined the Imported Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (ITMA). Hercules, which has worldwide sales in excess of US$500,000,000.00, will be represented within the association by its European Sales and Purchasing manager, Paul Sleath.

Goodyear OTR Tyres Publicise Season’s Highlights, Including Ploughing Podium

Goodyear has been publicising its OTR successes, including an excellent performance in the World Ploughing Championship, the growth of its AGRI Club and the introduction of a new crane tyre. Andrew Mitchell Jnr, hailing from Forfar, Scotland, came second in the World Ploughing Championships in New Zealand earlier in the year, using Goodyear Optitrac DT806 tyres on his machine. Mitchell declared himself thrilled to have come in second and Goodyear says it was proud to have assisted this with their DT806 tyres fitted to his Ford tractor. Overall, there were ploughmen and women from over 30 countries competing at the 57th world championships.

Rösler Group Celebrates 50th Anniversary in Essen

Rösler Group celebrated the OTR tyre business’ 50th anniversary during the recent Reifen 2010 trade fair. Customers, partner businesses and representatives of companies from around the world came to celebrate with company founder, Paul Roesler, Sr. His sons Paul, Jr. and Martin Rösler who have been guiding the company for the past 20 years were in attendance as were employees from Germany and Australia. And according to the company, its involvement in this year’s Essen show has been “a complete success for the entire Rösler Group.”

Yokohama Launches 2 New OTR Tyres in the US

Yokohama Tire Corporation has launched two new OTR tyres in the US – the RL42T and RB42T. Both are designed for dump trucks, but have two different applications according to the company. Gary Nash, Yokohama director, OTR sales, said the RL42 is for hard-packed surfaces and job sites where longer hauls are needed, while the RB42 is made for soft and/or loose surfaces such as mud, sand, gravel and rocks:

"The unique tread and sidewall designs help create specialized tires for specific applications. Yokohama is the only OTR manufacturer that builds tyres to handle specific jobs."
