Eastman Industries’ AddoIndia Brand Reports ‘Strong’ EU Sales in 1H 2010

Despite already being in existence for the seven years since 2003, Eastman Industries Ltd’s AddoIndia brand was a new one for Tyres & Accessories. Speaking to the magazine during the Reifen China exhibition in late November, Harpeet Singh Walia, the company’s international marketing executive, explained that the company’s cross ply tyres are produced in India, while the firm takes delivery of and distributes passenger car radials manufactured in China. In addition to these lines, the company sell “everything from bike to OTR tyres” and also markets lines in battery and wheel products. Many of the truck tyres the company sells are of bias construction, but company representatives are pragmatic about the fact that these will eventually go away.

Rösler Reports Meeting of "OTR Tyre Giants"

Wilhelm Schelkmann (94), the inventor of the pre-cure tyre renewal process, invited Paul Rösler Sen. (69) to his villa in Mallorca, where the two friends discussed how the pre-cure process (especially when used for 63” tyres) was evolving under Rösler Groups’ guidance. Rösler had a lot of news to share, including the renewal facilities completed in Australia, Kazakhstan, Indonesia and Uzbekistan.

Marangoni Announces Addition to US Dealer Network

A further retreader has joined Marangoni Tread North America’s Ringtread dealer network. Arizona based Coyote Tire Retreading, an established firm that services commercial, government and private fleets throughout its home state, has thus added the Italian manufacturer’s splice-less retreading system to its operation. “The Ringtread system will be a top consideration for schools, OTR fleets, and other applications that want superior mileage, improved fuel economy and the reliability that is built into this product” said Coyote Tire Retreading owner Don Woodmansee. “Additionally, the level of support from MTNA is unmatched by any of our previous suppliers.”

Apollo Makes OE Breakthrough as Manufacturer Aims for Top 10

Apollo Tyres has demonstrated it is moving towards its goal of becoming a global player and entering the top 10 within the next five years with the news that it has joined the list of globally approved suppliers to German car marque Volkswagen. However the prestige associated with VW's global OE approval of Apollo's tyres is multiplied by the fact that the company has been selected to supply the replacement to VW's compact Fox model, known as the “Up”, which can be described as a European OE contract. This mini model is expected to be produced at the German carmaker's Brazil plant, where the Fox was previously constructed.

Bridgestone Reports 12% Sales Increase

The first three quarters of the 2010 fiscal year have been described by Bridgestone as a period “plagued by rising raw materials and materials prices and the appreciating Japanese yen.” Despite these hurdles, the tyre maker reports achieving a 12 per cent increase in net sales and 838 per cent rise in operating income during this time, having reached figures of 2,091.2 billion yen (£15.9 billion) and 113.4 billion yen (£861.5 million) respectively. Ordinary income for the nine months was 100.8 billion yen (£765.7 million) and net income 66.7 billion yen (£506.7 million), compared with an ordinary loss of 9.2 billion yen and net loss of 27.4 billion yen for the corresponding period a year earlier.

Stamford Tyres Confirms Automechanika Middle East 2011

Singapore based global tyre and wheel distributor Stamford Tyres has confirmed attendance for the next Automechanika Middle East in 2011. The exhibition, which takes place from 7 – 9 June at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre has added a range of product profiles to its Tyres section, which now has its own dedicated hall at the event. These include: Tyres (passenger, truck, bus, trailer); Tyres (OTR, Agricultural, Industrial/TBR); Rims, Tubes and Casings; Tyre Repair Material, Patches, Retreading Material and Equipment.

Rising Costs Force MAI to Raise MAXAM Tyre Prices

MAI Group recently raised its tyre prices by three per cent and Ian Thomas, head of Sales & Marketing at the company, warned that customers should brace themselves for a further price increase in December, of up to 10 per cent, as raw material costs continue to rocket. He said: "Over the last few months, we have absorbed the raw material price rises, but it has now reached the stage where we are reluctantly having to pass on some of the latest increases to customers."

US and China Both Claim WTO Victory in Tariff Dispute

The United States claimed victory in a recent trade spat with China over anti-dumping charges placed on imports pipes, tubes, OTR tyres and sacks. US Trade Representative (USTR) Ron Kirk told the AFP news agency that the World Trade Organisation (WTO) had broadly upheld Washington's right to place duties on goods from China that were unfairly subsidised: "This is a significant win for American workers and businesses affected by unfairly traded imports.”

Nevertheless a report produced by China’s Xinhua news agency suggests the People’s Republic would like to present the 22 October WTO ruling as falling in its favour. China welcomed the fact that the WTO found that the US imposition of anti-dumping and countervailing duties on four types of Chinese imports was inconsistent with WTO regulations, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said a day after the ruling was published.

Bridgestone to Expand OTR, Steel Cord Output with £188 milion Investment

Bridgestone Corporation has announced plans to invest 24 billion yen (£188 million; 211.7 million euros, US$296 million) in expanding production capacity of its Kitakyushu Plant. According to the company, Bridgestone is making the move to address “the continuing increases in global demand for large and ultra-large off-the-road radial tyres used on construction and mining vehicles.” Bridgestone will also expand production of the steel cord used in large and ultra-large OTR tyres manufactured at its Saga Plant. Post expansion production is scheduled to begin from January 2013. Production capacity at the Kitakyushu Plant is scheduled to increase to 130 tons per day when the expansion is completed in the second half of 2013.

Effiplus Makes its UK Debut at Brityrex

Giving the range its UK debut at Brityrex (following a European launch at Reifen Essen in June and the initial unveiling at Reifen China last December), Techking’s aim is to place the Effiplus brand at the top of the budget segment with a view to progressing into the economy sector within the next five years. To this end, the company used its position at Brityrex as platform for attracting new distribution partners. The company’s strategy right across Europe is to offer its partners exclusivity in the various markets it works in, but company representatives also recognised that in some mature markets like the UK this it not always possible. While Techking is said to prefer to the model of offering exclusivity to a single partner, one idea is to divide the market between two or three regionally exclusive distribution partners, if necessary.

There is a long tradition of mining in South Africa and the country is the world's leading producer of platinum, manganese and chrome, the second-largest producer of gold and the fourth-largest diamond producer. With such a history, it is fitting that South Africa plays host to the biennial Electra Mining Africa exhibition which, since its inception over 40 years ago, has grown to become South Africa's largest trade exhibition and the second largest mining show in the world.

Techking Places Focus on Service

In recent months Techking has been in the spotlight because of its entry into the passenger car tyre market, yet during CITExpo the Chinese OTR tyre specialist’s exhibition presence was also very much aligned towards the commercial vehicle sector. Techking’s aim was to present itself to its professional customers around the world as a solutions provider rather than just a supplier of tyres, explained market manager James Wang when speaking with Tyres & Accessories: “We want to offer service focusing on tyre management.” Techking presented one such service at the exhibition, namely its “Total Tire Management System” (TTMS).

With a prominent position at Brityrex 2010, Singapore-based Stamford Tyres said it had concentrated on further enhancing the growing profile of their Sumo Firenza brand in the UK, Ireland and Europe. The Sumo Firenza sales team welcomed “a steady flow of visitors” to the brand’s attractive stand, which incorporated an extensive selection of tyres incorporating PCR, UHP, 4×4/SUV, light truck and truck plus alloy wheels from the group's SSW (Stamford Sport Wheels) range.

MAI and Heuver Sign European Distribution Deal

In a major initiative, the MAI Group has appointed Netherlands-based wholesaler Heuver Bandengroothandel as the exclusive distributor of its MAXAM range of OTR and earthmover tyres in no fewer than 18 European countries. Speaking from the company's Verona headquarters, MAI Group’s European Sales manager Kevin Buckley described the agreement as "a fantastic deal for both parties".

Techking Increasing Emphasis on European Markets

Chinese tyre manufacturer Techking is expanding its emphasis on European markets with the appointment of local staff to manage and develop continental markets including the UK. Speaking at Brityrex 2010, new European sales and marketing director Vincent Van Houtte told Tyres & Accessories that the company is serious about investing in Europe. Van Houtte joined Techking during the last quarter following years of experience at Bridgestone Europe and Solideal including passenger car, two-wheel and OTR tyre related roles. He joins a year after the firm appointed Samuel Hermanssen as vice-president Europe. Hermansson, who is Swedish, brings with him 20 years of experience of work at premium tyre manufacturers such as Continental.
