Bridgestone expanding Bloomington, US plant

Work has begun on a US$19.5 million expansion project at Bridgestone America Tire Operations’ Bloomington OTR plant in Illinois, USA, the tyre maker reports. The project is expected to be completed in mid-2013, and most of the investment is being directed towards the purchase and installation of new machinery. Additional capacity realised through the project will primarily go to the production of tyres used in heavy industry, and Bridgestone says at least 40 new jobs are expected to result from the plant expansion.

It’s all good: Titan reports a record start to 2012

Titan International is very pleased with its first quarter 2012 results. The company recorded sales of US$463.1 million for the three-month period, compared to first quarter 2011 sales of $280.8 million; these higher sales levels are attributed to the April 2011 acquisition of Goodyear’s Latin American agricultural tyre business, which recorded sales of $90.3 million for the first quarter 2012 and continued to benefit from strong demand in the agriculture and earthmoving/construction segment, combined with price/mix improvements.

New factory, more capacity: Alliance outlines India production plans

News out of India indicate Alliance Tire Group is planning to erect a new OTR tyre plant there and boost capacity at another plant. According to a report in the Business Standard, the tyre maker is looking at investing a total of around US$160 million; this will go towards a 50,000 tonne per annum greenfield facility in Gujarat state and to boost output from the company’s Tamil Nadu factory from 48,000 tonnes per annum to 61,000 tonnes. A co-generation plant will also be installed in Tamil Nadu.

Michelin sales up, volumes down in Q1

Michelin reports having achieved Group net sales of 5.304 billion euros in the first quarter of 2012, an increase of 5.1 per cent on the same quarter last year. This growth was propelled by a 23.8 per cent rise in net sales in the company’s specialty businesses; sales of earthmover, agricultural, two-wheel and aircraft tyres, along with Michelin Travel Partner and Michelin Lifestyle, amounted to 940 million euros during the quarter. A more modest 2.9 per cent growth in net sales to 2.760 billion was witnessed in Michelin’s passenger car and light truck tyres division, while truck tyre division sales decreased 0.1 per cent year-on-year to 1.604 billion euros.

Michelin reveals new OTR plant ‘aggressive’ timetable

Michelin North America officials have shed a little additional light on the tyre-maker’s plans to build a new off the road plant and expand another in South Carolina, Tire Review reports. Both projects were unveiled officially morning during a press conference earlier in the week at MNA headquarters in Greenville, South Carolina. MNA said it would construct an all-new radial OTR tyre plant in Anderson County, SC, and expand its existing OTR plant in nearby Lexington, SC. The company estimates that the two projects would result in 500 new jobs, and will take an investment of $750 million.

Dairy farm fits Michelin radial tyres to skid steer loader

Michelin has fit its new BibSteel Hard-Surface radial tyres to a skid steer loader for one of the first times in the UK. Cornish dairy farmer, Graham Kitto, owner of Higher Coombe Farm in Liskeard, used cross-ply tyres on his three Bobcat skid steers, which are used to scrape yards and clear slurry. The unforgiving working environment, in which the tyres run on abrasive surfaces, meant the cross-plys rarely lasted more than 300 hours.

Michelin North America has announced that it will construct a new radial OTR tyre plant in Anderson County, South Caroline, and expand its existing OTR plant in nearby Lexington, S.C. The company estimates that the two projects would result in 500 new jobs, and will take an investment of $750 million.

Quality a focus for Respa

Despite a marked trend towards increased industrialisation, business remains good for medium-sized retreaders in Germany. A good example of the companies within this segment, who promise quality through their own brands and have secured market position through a shift to higher-margin products over a number of years, is Respa GmbH. The retreader from Passau, near the border between Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic, is today one of only a few remaining high-profile passenger car tyre retreaders in Germany, and the company has established for itself a substantial market position in both the mould cure and precure retreading sectors. During a plant visit, Respa managing director Ferdinand Wenzl spoke with Tyres & Accessories about “an industry that is rich in variety.”

Gomme Piave and SD Meccanica collaborate with a new development

Just recently Italian firm Gomme Piave, which specialises in the retreading of OTR tyres, celebrated its 50th anniversary. And despite the uncertainties the industry has faced during this time the company maintains its dedication towards innovation. “When retreading first emerged in the 1950s Italy developed into one of the leading countries in this sector, and this tradition remains strong to this day,“ shares Giomme Piave’s owner Augusto Favaro. “There is no other country in Europe that can boast having these specialised competencies to such an extent.”

Sonil Ventilfabrik's role in the TPMS supply chain

As is the case in any manufacturing business, production of the finished item usually represents the last link in a complex supply chain. Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) are no different. So with a view to understanding a little more of the TPMS landscape, Tyres & Accessories contacted growing Indian valve and TPMS part supplier Sonil Ventilfabrik. The company's link to the segment is in the development and manufacture of what it calls "aiding accessories" to external TPMS sensors. The latest particular aiding accessory, also known as the T valve, has a dual purpose. It offers an additional port to mount TPMS sensors and is simultaneously used to fill tyres with air without removing the external sensor.

The larger the tyres, the greater the benefit of TPMS

With giant OTR tyres containing enough cooped up energy to project a person two kilometres, the particular importance of tyre safety on mine sites is perhaps underestimated. One way of redressing this balance, raising awareness of the pressure and condition of a tyre and at the same time saving emissions, fuel and therefore money, is to employ tyre pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) to keep an eye on these large and expensive components.

Leader Tread ready for growth

Some 2.3 million truck tyres are currently sold in South Africa each year, with the market fairly evenly divided between sales of new tyres and retreads. Competing in the retread market are numerous familiar global names such as Bridgestone Bandag, Michelin and Goodyear Dunlop, yet one of the longest established retreading sector firms is local player Leader Tread. The Johannesburg-based company has been in the business for almost half a century and in recent times awareness of its products has also increased outside of Africa. In February, Tyres & Accessories spoke to Leader Tread managing director Brett Sproson and gained an insight into a company that is active and growing in all areas of the retreading and retreading materials market.

TGI partnering for sizable growth

When Tyres & Accessories last caught up with Tire Group International a year ago, the Miami, Florida-based wholesaler was able to report a highly successful 2010, with revenues up 35 per cent year-on-year and unit sales climbing 26 per cent to around 1,200,000 pieces. Back then company CEO Antonio Gonzalez said he expected continued growth in 2011, and TGI has delivered on this forecast; last year the US wholesaler achieved a 25 per cent increase in unit sales and revenue grew by a third. And while we’re currently less than a quarter of the way through 2012 and the year may yet throw a surprise or two in our direction, recent and current developments at TGI indicate the company will once again report strong annual growth.
