Jaguar to make crossover vehicle in Solihull, creating 1,300 jobs

Jaguar Land Rover is to manufacture a new “performance crossover” vehicle at its Solihull production plant. According to the announcement made at the Detroit Motor Show, together with a bid to extend its expertise in aluminium and lightweight technologies, the company will create 1,300 new jobs. These are in addition to the 1700 created in 2013 for the introduction of the Jaguar XE. The company’s headcount has doubled over the past few years to more than 32,000 globally, of which 30,500 are in the UK.

Yokohama tyres for Ariel Nomad

The Ariel Nomad lacks doors and a roof, but fortunately the new machine from the creator of the Atom is well-equipped in the wheel department – and as these wheels needed tyres capable of handling everything the lightweight, 235BHP Nomad could throw at them, Yokohama was chosen to supply the rubber.

Nexen OE on Fiat 500X

Nexen is to supply the Fiat-Chrysler Group with its CP 671 tyre for fitment on the 500X, Fiat’s first crossover model. The Nexen-Fiat contract will see Nexen supply original equipment (OE) tyres from February, when the 500X enters production.

Dunlop Aircraft Tyres to supply 10,000 tyres a year to Boeing C-17 fleet

Birmingham-based Dunlop Aircraft Tyres has won a deal to support the world’s fleet of more than 270 Boeing C-17 Globemaster III military transport aircraft. News of the deal – one of the biggest in Dunlop Aircraft Tyres’ 105-year history – follows the announcement that the company is investing in establishing its first ever tyre distribution and retreading facility in the United States.

Hankook Tire announces Mercedes-Benz MPV tyre supply

Two Hankook tyres have been selected as original equipment fitments on the Mercedes-Benz V-Class. The MPV will receive the Ventus Prime² in size 225/55 R 17 101 V XL and the Vantra LT in size 205/65 R 16 C 101/103 H. Both tyre specifications are manufactured in Hankook’s plant in Hungary.

North Korea’s response to ‘The Interview’ has placed Hollywood under a particularly intense spotlight of late, but our first news of the week relates to something less controversial and, as you’d expect, more tyre-related. But nevertheless it focuses on films and film making – Polish cinema camera crane manufacturer Moviebird has selected Starco wheels for fitment on its products.

Nissan Navara first OE for Toyo Tire’s Malaysian plant & Thai subsidiary

The Toyo Open Country A25, produced at the company’s Toyo Tire Malaysia factory, has been selected as an original equipment fitment on models of the NP300 Navara pickup produced in Thailand. The 12th generation Navara will receive the Open Country A25 in size 255/70R16 111H. The tyres will be delivered through Toyo Tire (Thailand), the local sales subsidiary established in April 2013. This is the first occasion that a tyre produced at the Toyo Tire Malaysia plant has been adopted as an original equipment tyre, and the first time Toyo Tire (Thailand) has supplied tyres to an OEM customer.

On the buses – Hankook wins second award for Blue Bird supply

It’s now two years since Hankook Tire began supplying AH12 steer and Z35A drive axle tyres to bus manufacturer Blue Bird Corporation for original equipment fitment on its school buses, and the US-based company has recognised Hankook’s efforts by bestowing it one of ten 2014 Outstanding Supplier Awards; Hankook award success was in the Polymer category. This is the second year in a row Hankook has received the award; the tyre maker says its back to back wins underscore the commitment shown in its original equipment activities with Blue Bird Corporation.

Bridgestone has announced two new Mercedes-Benz original equipment fitments. The new Mercedes-Benz GLA and C-Class will roll out of the factory and be sold globally on Bridgestone rubber.

Goodyear’s Wrangler for new-generation Ford F-150

An all-new version of the best-selling truck in the USA – the Ford F-150 – is now arriving at dealers, and Goodyear reports it is supplying tyres to four F-150 models. The Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure will be supplied to the 2015 Ford F-150 XL, XLT, Lariat and King Ranch models in sizes 275/55R20, LT 245/70R17 and LT275/65R18, and the Wrangler Fortitude supplied in HT in 275/65R18 and 265/70R17.

November motorcycle sales rise

“With the winter weather approaching we expect to see demand for motorcycles at a yearly low, however it is encouraging to see that sales in November were up 14.5 per cent compared to 2013”, said Stephen Latham, Head of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) which represents motorcycle retailers across the UK.

In total 5,795 bikes were registered in November – an increase of 734 more units more than November 2013.

Ducati chooses redesigned Pirelli MT 60 RS for all Scrambler models

Pirelli’s MT 60 RS has been chosen as original equipment for all four versions of Ducati’s new Scrambler. The motorcycle manufacturer is fitting the Pirelli enduro street tyre in size 110/80 R18 (front) and 180/55 R17 (rear) on the Icon, Urban Enduro, Full Throttle and Classic. Although the MT 60 RS is something of a perennial within the Pirelli portfolio, the Italian tyre maker says the particular sizes supplied to Ducati were specifically made for the Scrambler, and when developing the fitments it “totally redesigned the MT 60 RS in terms of specifications and performance.”

Carlos Ghosn re-elected as ACEA President

The board of directors of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) has re-elected Carlos Ghosn, chairman and CEO of Renault, as its President for 2015.

Speaking after his re-election, Ghosn said: “I am honoured that my colleagues on the Board have shown their continued confidence in me. 2014 is set to mark the first year of sales growth in the EU industry since 2007. Next year we will continue to push for a political environment that will help us sustain this growth.”

Coach registrations rise in November as bus registrations stall

SMMT figures on coach and bus registrations in November show that total bus and coach registrations grew 0.8 per cent, against a 2.6 per cent fall in the year-to-date. Coach registrations rose 6.5 per cent in the month, in contrast to the 13.3 per cent decline in the purpose-built bus market.
