VW expands artificial intelligence work

The Volkswagen Group reports that it is expanding its artificial intelligence (AI) work in order to “not only with a view to using this key technology in the field of autonomous driving and in production, but also to speed up corporate processes”. To that end, Prof. Patrick van der Smagt will be joining the team of AI experts and data scientists at the Volkswagen Group’s Data Lab in Munich from October, and will lead the AI team. Van der Smagt is Associate Professor at Technische Universität München and one of Europe’s leading experts in deep learning and robotics.

House of Lords invites driverless car contributions

The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee has begun to investigate future uses of driverless vehicles in the UK. The inquiry will collect evidence on the potential uses and benefits of autonomous vehicles in contexts such as road transport, farming and space exploration.

Nexen OE on Porsche Cayenne

Porsche has chosen Nexen N’Fera RU1 255/55 R18 109Y XL tyres as original equipment (OE) on it is Porsche Cayenne model. The news marks the first time Nexen tyres have been approved as OE for any Porsche car.

August a good month for Western Europe car sales

The Western European passenger car market enjoyed a strong month in August in what is traditionally one of the quietest months of the sales year, posting a reasonably strong uplift in August of 9.7 per cent y/y to 776,861 units, according to the latest IHS Automotive Western European forecast.

It should be taken into account that most markets benefited from one extra working day during the month, which is also traditionally one of the quietest sales months in Western Europe as a result of the August holiday period, with a seasonally adjusted figure in the region of 5 per cent.

Good August demand for motorcycles despite imminent plate change

“In what is traditionally a low volume month for motorcycle registrations, it was encouraging to see a strong 4 per cent growth in sales over the same period last year – ahead of the 66-plate change next month”, said Stephen Latham, Head of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) which represents motorcycle retailers across the UK.

Bridgestone developing new tyres for Jaguar XJ220

Bridgestone is working with Don Law XJ220 in the UK to develop a new generation of tyres for the legendary Jaguar XJ220.

The original collaboration in the development of the tyres for the XJ220 is well documented. However, tyres of the size required for the car went out of production some years ago.

MG Motor UK helps set international automotive standards

Just 18 months before the introduction of eCall (mandatory in-car emergency call system for all new type approval vehicles sold within the European Union), MG Motor UK has confirmed its involvement as part of the CEN TC278/WG15 intelligent transport systems working group.

Through Guillaume Honore – Telematics Engineer at the SAIC Motor Technical Centre (SMTC), which is based at MG’s Longbridge site in Birmingham – MG will play a key role in the ongoing development of eCall.

Falken tyres OE on Skoda Superb

Czech car maker Skoda, part of the VW Group since 1991, has chosen Falken Ecorun for its Superb saloon model. The most popular mid-size car is now fitted with Falken‘s Ziex ZE914 Ecorun tyres as standard.

The new Superb features a Euro 6 engine and is up to 30 per cent more economical on fuel. Falken believes Skoda’s choice of Ziex Ecorun rubber as its OEM tyres, supplied by Falken Tyre Europe to the production facility at Kvasiny in the Czech Republic in size 215/55R17 94W ZE914 A EC fits this philosophy.

Auto tech creating US $350 billion of supplier opportunities

Fuel efficiency, weight reduction, advanced safety technologies, human machine interface (HMI), lighting and consumer comfort features will drive US$350 billion in incremental automotive supplier business opportunities, by 2021 — but not without initial challenges. The findings are based on recent research included in SupplierInsight and Component Forecast Analytics, a new platform from IHS Automotive, part of business information provider IHS Markit.

Aluminium content in cars to increase up to 30%

The aluminium content in cars is set to increase by up to 30 per cent over the next 10 years. Auto Body Sheet leads the growth with an expected increase of 110 per cent over the same period. The growth is largely attributed to aluminium’s role in reducing car weight thereby contributing to low emission mobility.

The study, by consulting and research firm Ducker Worldwide and commissioned by European Aluminium, predicts that the aluminium content of cars produced in Europe could reach nearly 200 kg per vehicle by 2025, up from 150 kg today.

UK car manufacturing continues to grow

UK car manufacturing achieved its 12th consecutive month of growth in July, rising 7.6 per cent to 126,566 units compared with the same month in 2015, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Year-to-date production grew 12.3 per cent to 1,023,723 units – the best performance since 2000, and the first time in 12 years volumes have been greater than one million in the first seven months.

Demand was up both at home and abroad with a 14.1 per cent increase in output for the domestic market and exports up 6.0 per cent to 101,184 units. More than three quarters of a million cars built this year are destined for overseas markets, a 77.8 per cent share of total production volumes.

What a difference a year makes – July CV production down 5.2 per cent

SMMT figures reveal that UK commercial vehicle (CV) manufacturing fell

-5.2 per cent in July. The decline shows a marked difference to last year’s figures, when a remarkably strong performance in July 2015 saw production rise by almost 50 per cent.

Unrealistic valuations helping to distort used vehicle market, says Glass’s

Fleets “hanging onto” cars and vans in an attempt to achieve unrealistic and inflated valuations are causing distortions in the used car and van markets, say Glass’s. Reluctance to sell below these guide prices, and continually resubmitting vehicles for sale at the same or other auctions, creates a range of problems, said Rupert Pontin, director of valuations. He explained: “Lately, we are going through a phase where we see the same cars and vans presented at auction time and again – and our feedback says that failure to reach book values is the reason.
