When Ashley Croft used his farewell Tyre Wholesaler Group annual chairman’s speech to ask how we define what a “premium” tyre is, he captured something of this year’s tyre industry zeitgeist (click here for full coverage of the speech). Of the speech didn’t just deal with this question – it touched on labelling, part worns and what the UK industry is doing to improve the availability of good market data too – but, if the market ruminations of a number of key players are anything to go by, Croft wasn’t the only one to have been raising this question during the last 12 months.

And the annual speech revealed some interesting details of what is on the horizon for the NTDA in particular and the tyre industry in general. With both points in mind, Tyres & Accessories has produced this comprehensive review of both the award winners and forthcoming NTDA news.
Following on from the headline news that Lanxess/NTDA published at report detailing a UK retail perspective on 16 October, Tyres & Accessories is now publishing further details and discussion of the complete report . The initial findings were that the tyre labelling has so far been something of a “missed opportunity” for the tyre business […]

Just a day after Goodyear Dunlop released its review of the impact of tyre labelling legislation on consumers across Europe, a Lanxess/NTDA report is painting a somewhat less rosy view of progress in this area. Details of the research are expected to be shared at tonight’s Tyre and Fast Fit Awards in Birmingham, with the full report scheduled for publication on the morning of 17 October. While it has to pointed out that the Lanxess/NTDA research centred on the UK only as opposed to Europe, it must als be said the conclusions appear to be somewhat different.

The NTDA has announced that after over 25 years as director of the NTDA, Richard Edy is to retire from the post at the end of January.
Just a day after we announced the first early details of the NTDA’s national tyre labelling survey, it has now emerged that mytyres.co.uk is also managing a survey on a very similar subject.
Writing in a customer email dated 2 September 2013, mytyres.co.uk explained the background to tyre labelling before going on to explain that company is interested in learning more about what consumers themselves think of labelling.
Almost a year after point of sale tyre labelling became mandatory in Europe, the NTDA has revealed that it plans to release the details of a survey into attitudes towards labelling at the association’s annual dinner in October.
Almost 12 months since the labelling of tyres at the point of sale became mandatory across the EU and the UK, the NTDA wondered what effect, if any, it has had on the way tyres are sold – have customers become better informed and more knowledgeable? Are they aware of the introduction of the label? Do they appreciate the information on it? And how important is this relative to price?
This year’s GEA gold day was staged at Whittlebury Park near Silverstone and with 18 teams was one of the best supported in recent years. According to the Garage Equipment Association, the event was all about raising cash for the motor trade charity BEN and this year’s profits were £2,927, which all goes to the charity.
The 2013 NTDA Golf Day, sponsored once again by Westlake Tyres, was held on Wednesday, 24 July. The setting was the stunning stately home of Brocket Hall, which stands in 540 acres of grounds and boasts two championship golf courses. The NTDA event took place on the Palmerston course and, unlike last year at The Belfry, when a torrential rainstorm swept the course, the day's play took place in brilliant sunshine. A full list of winners is given below, but a couple of highlights were the guest speaker Adger Brown, who proved that comedy is not his only talent by winning the Les Amiss Bowl, and Brian O'Neill of the ITIA, who recorded a hole in one. The 'Beat the Pro' competition on the fifth hole raised the figure of £400 for BEN.
