Goodyear Names OTR General Manager

Goodyear has appointed John Sweeney, former general manager for the company’s chemical division since November 2004, said he seeks to improve OTR operations and financial performance. The business has faced an industry-wide product shortage since last year. “We must refocus on customer and end-user needs. In these challenging times, demand has risen dramatically, and we must take the necessary steps to lessen the impact of this shortage on their operations,” Sweeney said.

SEMA Online Show Registration Open

(Akron/Tire Review) Online registration is now open for the 2005 SEMA Show. Online registration can be accessed from www.semashow.com, where online tools such as the “My Show Planner” have been upgraded to make planning and navigation of the show more convenient. SEMA reminded visitors that it is a trade-only show, so it has increased screening procedures and heightened qualifications to ensure the exclusivity and professionalism of the event. The show is due to run from 1-4 November at the Las Vegas convention centre.

1,500 Already Onboard for 2005 SEMA Show

(Akron/Tire Review) SEMA has reported that some 1,500 companies have already registered as exhibitors for the 2005 SEMA Show, which runs from 1 – 4 November in Las Vegas. For the second consecutive year, exhibit space registrations have been handled online through SEMA’s show coordinator ConvExx Show Management. Space is still available, and details can be found at www.semashow.com.

Scotland’s Tyres give ‘Cause for Concern’

The number of worn and defective tyres on Scotland’s roads is still a cause for concern, says the Tyre Industry Council (TIC). Analysis from last year’s tyre checks has indicated that the number of badly worn tyres, having a tread depth at or below 2mm, is 17 per cent.

Roadside tyre checks carried out by Strathclyde Police late last year showed that 9.6 per cent of cars and light vans had one or more tyres below the legal limit.

Tyre Disposal Company Fined

Two waste management companies have been fined a total of £140,000 at the Old Bailey. The fine followed a prosecution brought by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after an investigation into an incident where an employee, Mr Thomas Akwasi Aseidu-Ampofoh was crushed to death under a telescopic reach truck.

Bridgestone NA and Unions Continue Negotiations

While negotiations between the USWA and Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire (BFNAT) continue, it appears that union representatives may be preparing for some kind of on-the-job action. According to a Tire Review report, a BFNAT spokesman mentioned that talks are progressing albeit slowly. USWA-representatives at BFNAT plants have been working without a contract since April 2003. In November 2003, talks broke off all together and the two sides didn’t return t the bargaining table until December 2004.

On 2 February, a notice was posted on the USWA Local 1155L web site suggesting some “job action” may be imminent. The notice to workers at BFNAT’s truck tyre plant in Warren County, Tennessee stated: “The leadership of USWA 1155L, in an effort to facilitate mobilisation and strike preparation, regrets to inform our membership we are no longer accepting reservations at the Union Hall for its use. Prior reservations will be honored if the business of USWA 1155L allows. This effort will only be necessary until justice is served.”

Strike Threat at Tyre Plant Lifted

The threat of strike action at the Michelin tyre plant in Ballymena has been lifted, the Belfast Telegraph has reported. Workers at the plant voted by a substantial majority not to embark on a course of industrial action. As a result, union negotiators have told management that a pay offer, which had been rejected in November will now be accepted.

Michelin Workers Vote Over Ballymena Strike Action

Workers at Michelin’s Ballymena plant are to vote over possible strike action. The outcome of an indicative vote on industrial action at the Michelin tyre factory should be known early next week. The vote follows the news that workers at Michelin’s Dundee operation have accepted the terms, while workers at the company’s Stoke-on-Trent site are in the process of postal ballot about the strike action.

Into the ‘Guinness Book of Records’ on Bridgestone Tyres

Gerhard Plattner, an Austrian journalist and specialist in fuel economy record-breaking, succeeded in crossing ten European countries using just one tank of diesel. His trip began on 16th November 2004 in the German town of Lindau, on Lake Constance, with a full sealed tank and the firm intention to cross as many countries as possible without refuelling. After first travelling through Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, he returned to Austria via the Feldkirch border crossing. The road took him further through the South Tyrolean Puster Valley, and on to Slovenia, West Croatia, Hungary and Slovakia. After a 1,160-km journey lasting 15 hours and 7 minutes, Plattner reached his final destination: the Czech Republic. On arriving in the tenth country of this epic ‘Eco Tour’, he parked his Golf V TDI running on Bridgestone „B390 Eco” tyres with the Volkswagen dealer in Brünn. “Above all, I would like to praise the Bridgestone ‘B390’ tyres. I have used them on previous record attempts and, yet again, they’ve performed splendidly. Not only do they have excellent fuel saving qualities, but they’re also comfortable and have first-rate handling characteristics,“ said Plattner after his tour throughout Europa which earned him a place in the ‘Guinness Book of Records’.

Hankook: Sales Up 15.3 per cent

Hankook has released monthly financial results for November, which show that the company has experienced a 15.3 per cent increase in operating profit and an 8.4 per cent increase in sales volumes. In this period tyre sales, by volume, increased from 2.761 million to 2.992 million. The fact that revenues increased more than sales volumes suggests that the company sold more of its higher profit products, indicating an improved product mix.

November Car Registrations Up

According to figures released by the SMMT, car registrations went up 172,094 units (1.8 per cent) in November, leading to confidence that by the end of the year 2004 will be a growth year. This is exemplified in the fact that year-to-date figures are only 682 units behind the 2003 level. In order for 2004 to be a record year only 156,135 cars need to be registered. Commenting on the announcement, SMMT chief executive, Christopher Macgowan said: “November’s new car market was the second largest on record, boosting registrations towards a fourth consecutive record annual total. While the December market is difficult to predict, 156,135 new cars would see another record total. With Christmas coming, it remains to be seen if enough people have a new car on their gift list.”

Giovanni Ferrario Steps Down

On 11 November, Pirelli’s Giovanni Ferrario, stepped down as managing director and general manager. In a statement, the company thanked Mr Ferrario for the 30 years of service he had given to the company. The business areas previously headed by Mr Ferrario will report to managing director, Carlo Buora. The Tire Division, headed by general manager, Francesco Gori, will report directly to the chairman for matters concerning divisional strategies and business development.

US Tyre Shipments Increase

Deutsche Bank analysts are reporting that US tyre replacement shipments have “picked up” in November, increasing 6 per cent year over year. This was the first positive year over year comparision since June. The analysts also suggest that Cooper Tire may have slightly under-performed in the market. In spite of this the analysts also report that Cooper is currently proceeding above its –10 per cent volume assumption for the quarter.

Cooper-Standard Sale to Go-Ahead

Cooper Tire has been given the ‘go-ahead’ to sell four of it Cooper-Standard Automotive plants having reached an agreement with the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) union. As a result an appeal to the US 7th Circuit Court of Appeals will be dismissed.

Previously Cooper had been under an injunction granted on 2 November, by the US District Court in Indiana. This followed a complaint filed by the USWA asserting the right to negotiate new labour agreements with a buyer before a sale of the four union facilities.

Cooper has already announced a definitive agreement to sell Cooper-Standard Automotive for $1.165 billion to an entity formed by The Cypress Group and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners.

“I am pleased that the talks with the Steelworkers have produced an expedited and favorable conclusion,” said Thomas A. Dattilo, Cooper’s chairman, president and CEO.

Mr Dattilo added: “We have continued working toward closing our transaction with the Cypress Group and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners throughout the process of negotiating with the union. This agreement certainly brings us closer to concluding the sale of Cooper-Standard Automotive, without any additional cost to Cooper Tire & Rubber Company. We continue to believe that the transaction will close before the end of the year.”

Exact details of the agreement have not been released. Cooper expects its deal with Cypress/Goldman Sach to be completed by the end of the year.
