More Strikers Crossing Picket Lines, Goodyear Says

(Akron/Tire Review) According to Associated Press reports, Goodyear officials said that “hundreds” of striking United Steelworkers employees have returned to their jobs at Goodyear plants. USW locals, however, dispute that assessment. A Goodyear spokesman told the AP that production levels at struck plants are increasing as strikers return to work and the company hires additional temporary workers. Some 16,500 workers at 16 of Goodyear’s North American plants have been on strike since 5 October. No master contract negotiations have been held since talks broke off in mid-November.

USW Disputes Analysts Date Claim

(Akron/Tire Review) The United Steelworkers union has attacked a report by Himansho Patel, an analyst with JP Morgan Securities, which suggests a key date in the union’s current strike against Goodyear could be 3 January – the date plant worker medical benefit coverage lapses. USW International Vice President Tom Conway sharply criticized the report. “The facts are that the real cut-off date is in mid-April,” Conway Stated in a press release issued 29 November “COBRA legislation gives you 60 days to make a decision to continue (your health care coverage) and another 45 days before you have to make a payment.” However, workers electing to continue medical coverage under COBRA are still liable for those premiums.

EA Fines Waste Tyre Operation £10,000

A Hartlepool company has been prosecuted for storing and shredding over 120,000 tyres at an unlicensed recycling depot. Niramax Recycling and Manufacturing Ltd, was fined £10,000 at Hartlepool Magistrates’ court on Monday 20 November and ordered to pay costs of £5,000. The company has pleaded guilty to four tyre waste offences under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

The company was first contacted by the Environment Agency in 2002 and told that its site required a waste management licence to store and process waste tyres. However, by March 2006, Environment Agency officers found 128,000 tyres on site, causing fears of a fire risk.

16:30 Friday: The Most Likely Crash Time

Continental Tyres today issued a warning to motorists that between 16:00 and 17:00 on a Friday afternoon is the most common time for car accidents to occur and in November when it’s dark, cold and often wet at this time – the risk increases further. In 2005, there were 2,454 accidents on UK roads at this time – that’s 35 per cent more than occurred from 08:00 – 09:00 and nearly 50 per cent more than occurred between 09:00 and 10:00on Friday mornings.

2007 Pirelli Calendar Launched

On Thursday 16 November the 2007 Pirelli Calendar (dubbed “a bed and five stories”) was launched at a star-studded event at the Battersea Evolution Park in London. Five acclaimed Hollywood actresses star in the new calendar – Sophia Loren, Penelope Cruz, Hilary Swank, Naomi Watts and Lou Doillon – but celebrities from Michael Caine to the Italian Ambassador, not to mention business leaders including Pirelli SpA chairman, Marco Tronchetti Provera and Pirelli Tyre CEO, Dr Francesco Gori, could also be seen at the launch. The new calendar was photographed by the Dutch duo Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin in California.

Hankook Tyres Stolen

1400 tyres have been stolen from a container belonging to Hankook Tyre UK Ltd. The company reports that a container carrying 165/65R 14T K702 and 185/65R 14T K702 tyres was hijacked on the A45 en route to its Daventry headquarters late on the 15 November. Hankook Tyre UK Ltd has asked that anybody approached with the aforementioned products should contact them directly, if they are not from a reliable source.

Slovak President Launches New Tyre Line at Matador-Omskshina

Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic and Omsk region Governor Leonid Polezhayev commissioned a new tyre production line at the Matador-Omskshina joint venture on Wednesday 8 November. JV Director General Stefan Prokop told the Itar-Tass news agency that in 2005 the main shareholders, Matador and Sibur-Russian Tyres (50:50 partners), approved the joint development and modernisation of the enterprise and envisaged more than 1.5 billion roubles in investment.

Bridgestone Supports Children in Need

Bridgestone UK has donated a set of tyres for a charity auction in aid of Children in Need. The rubber contributed to a total of more than £12,000 towards this year’s appeal after they were sold under the hammer by BBC Worldwide Magazines Production department.

Good Garage Scheme Launches Second Phase

The Good Garage Scheme has launched the second phase of its marketing campaign to attract older car owners and female drivers to the scheme. Throughout November and December a programme of leaflet drops, editorial coverage and radio and vehicle advertising is aiming to further raise the awareness of the Good Garage Scheme and its portal – www.goodgaragescheme.com – to millions of motorists throughout the North East Region, the first region on the scheme. There are now 810 Good Garage Scheme members in the UK. The latest marketing campaign is seen as a prelude to taking the scheme to a National level in March 2007.

Sapphire Supports First Step Charity

Sapphire Energy Recovery and the charity, First Step Trust have joined forces in a unique contract to help the long-term unemployed. First Step Trust has developed the SMaRT (Socially Minded and Responsible Trading) project, which dismantles and recycles unwanted and abandoned vehicles. Sapphire Energy Recovery has entered into a contract with the charity to take up to 100 tonnes of waste tyres a year from the project, free of charge, for processing in their new Manchester depot at Partington.

Fulda Exelero to be Feature at MPH ‘06

Fulda Exelero, the German ultra-high-performance tyre, will be showing off its capabilities at the MPH Shows, to be held at Birmingham NEC on 26-29 October and at Earls Court, London on 2-5 November. Following Fulda’s performance in last year’s ‘MPH’ live demonstration show, international racing driver, Ben Collins, is to drive a Vauxhall Monaro in a hair raising fight sequence with a Ninja. Fulda Exeleros will be fitted to the Vauxhall.

Kumho Tires Presents World’s First 32 Inch SUV Tyre

Kumho Tires has announced that it has developed an ultra-large tyre with a 32 inch rim diameter for the SUV (sports utility vehicle) conversion market. The 305/25R32 size tyre is claimed to be the world’s first ultra-large UHP (ultra-high performance) tyre and extends the boundaries of the SUV conversion market still further.

Michelin Germany to Introduce 40-Hour Week

Michelin is planning to phase-in a 40-hour week to workers at the company’s five German production plants. The news affects 5,750 workers who previously worked 37.5 hours each week. They proposals suggest workers will earn the same weekly rate as before, effectively decreasing their hourly wages, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) reported. Discussions between Michelin and workers are set to take place in November, with spring 2007 the target date for a resolution. “The pressure from the competitive situation and our customers is enormous. We cannot wait any longer. We need an agreement,” Michelin Germany director, Juergen Eitel told FAZ.

Nexen Tire to Raise Prices in November

(Akron/Tire Review) Ontario, California-based Nexen Tire America Inc. announced price increases on passenger and light truck tyres that will take effect 1 November. The increases, up to 6 per cent, will vary by distribution channel and product line. The main reasons for the price hikes include rising raw materials, transportation and operating costs, according to Nexen.
