Armond Boyes third in a series of retirements at Pelmar

The Pelmar Group has announced that Armond Boyes, managing director of its North American subsidiary, Pelmar USA LLC is to retire on 1 November 2011. Armond Boyes joined the Pelmar Group in 2008 from his previous position as general manger for retreading at Goodyear North America. He will continue as a consultant and will remain on the company's board of directors. No decision has yet been made about who will replace Boyes, but the company reports that it is considering a number of candidates.

Wholesale destocking leads to 10% fall in US tyre shipments

The latest data from the US shows that shipments, what we might call sell-in sales, of light vehicle replacement tyres fell 12 per cent for RMA members and 10 per cent for the overall industry in July. This follows falls of 8.6 per cent in June and 10.7 per cent in May. Commenting on the figures, Deutsche Bank analysts pointed out that “the weakness was significantly more pronounced for broadline (economy) tyres,” with volumes down more than 20 per cent year-on-year in this segment.

Mums lax with tyre care, Cooper Tire reports

Although a regimen of over-cautiousness seems de rigueur in parenting these days, when it comes to children and road safety the average mother takes a more casual attitude. A recent US survey conducted by Cooper Tire & Rubber in partnership with the websites Cars.com and MotherProof.com showed only one per cent of mums consider automotive maintenance as a priority in "keeping their children safe" – and none specifically mentioned tyre maintenance as a priority.

Titan CEO: ‘markets are going higher’

Maurice Taylor, chairman and CEO of Titan International has sought to add clarity to forecasts of what is happening in the agriculture, construction and mining markets by pointing out that the firm expects to receive three-digit millions of dollars worth of orders: “I’ve had a number of shareholders and analysts call and e-mail asking what’s going on in the farm, construction and mining markets…The majority of these e-mails show concern as to why there’s not more positive guidance going out from the big boys in equipment manufacturing for 2012…”, he explained, adding:

Federal Month promotions “a great success” for North American division

Taiwan manufacturer has thanked its distributors for running a “successful” inaugural Federal Month promotion in North America. Its distributor, Tire Dealer’s Warehouse, launched a month long promotion titled “Fly away with Federal”, where both customers and TDW sales team members were competing to earn Federal Fun bucks or Southwest Airlines travel vouchers. The manufacturer incentivised the TDW team in addition to customer rebates, which the manufacturer says led to sales targets being exceeded.

Cooper Tire grant emphasises ‘renewed commitment’ to technical capabilities

Elaborating on news of a recent US$1.5 million grant received from a US Department of Energy (DOE) agency, Cooper Tire & Rubber says the funding will go towards accelerating the “development and refinement of innovative tyre design, construction, materials and reinforcement technologies focused on the replacement tyre market.” The grant from the DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy calls for Cooper to develop an ultra lightweight tyre that delivers a minimum three per cent improvement in vehicle fuel efficiency. The anticipated timeframe for achieving this breakthrough is three years.

US, Chinese officials to speak at CITExpo seminar

Visitors to next month’s CITExpo in China will be given the opportunity to keep abreast of the latest regulations in North America in China. Show organiser Reliable International Exhibition Services reports that officials from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the US Department of Transportation, the Chinese Tire Standardization and Technology Committee and the Chinese National Product Quality Bureau will hold a seminar during the show. “Professionals from the Chinese tyre manufacturers may take this unique opportunity to refresh their knowledge in ensuring their products to meet the required standards,” the organiser commented in a statement.

Michelin signs tyre, service supply agreement with US truck service chain

Ambest Service Centers, a 68-outlet chain of truck repair and facilities in the US, has signed a deal with Michelin Americas Truck Tires to stock the tyre maker’s range of Michelin and BFGoodrich brand products and for Michelin to offer tyre and emergency road service at many Ambest locations.

Triangle to establish US research, sales centres

Today the Triangle Group will officially launch its new US research, development and sales company. The Shandong province, China-based company then intends to begin its activities in North America with the establishment of a research and development centre in Akron, Ohio; this will be followed by sales offices. Triangle has already hired its first local employee and intends to start its US operations with 30 new local employees – 10 in research and development and 20 in sales. The number of employees is expected to grow as Triangle further establishes its North American operation.

US Yokohama OTR tyre prices heading upwards

Price increases of up to 11 per cent for all US market OTR tyres will be implemented by Yokohama Tire Corporation on September 1. These price rises will also be accompanied by in-line adjustments, the details of which will be announced at a later date.

Prototype Goodyear military tyre cuts rolling resistance by 40%

Work on a new, low rolling resistance military tyre and other projects has earned Goodyear high praise from some of the American military’s former top brass. US senator and retired Navy secretary John Warner and vice admiral Dennis McGinn (retired), who is now vice chairman for the CNA Military Advisory Board, recently visited the tyre maker’s headquarters in Akron, Ohio as part of a US-wide tour sponsored by the Pew Project on National Security, Energy and Climate, a group dedicated to highlighting connections between national security, energy independence, the economy and climate change.

Bridgestone Americas receives local funding for Des Moines plant expansion

To quote Tesco’s inescapable catchphrase, every little helps, and Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations’ US$56.6 million expansion project at its Des Moines, Iowa agricultural tyre facility has gained a small boost from the Polk County Board of Supervisors. At a meeting on August 16, this administrative board for the Des Moines factory’s local area approved a $50,000 grant and a $50,000 interest free loan for the project.

Orange oil Yokohama tyre becomes ‘museum piece’

The museum may be the last place you’d expect to see new-generation environmental tyres, yet Yokohama Tire is proud to announce that is exactly where specimens of its BluEarth-1 can be found. As of this autumn, the orange oil-infused tyre will be highlighted in a two-year exhibit as the Museum of Science in the US city of Boston. The “Making a Greener Tire” interactive display, which will be in the museum’s Transportation, Renewable Energy and Nanotechnology area, revolves around the BluEarth-1’s technology, which combines oil extracted from orange peels with silica and natural rubber to form “Super Nano-Power Rubber” (SNPR), a substance initially utilised in Yokohama’s dB Super E-spec tyre. Also to be featured is the BluEarth-1’s Airtex Advanced Liner, designed to reduce the amount of air loss from the tyre.

Yokohama profits up 74% in Q1

The first quarter of the 2011 financial year saw Yokohama Rubber’s net income shoot up 74 per cent year-on-year to 2,822 million yen (£22.6 million). This sizable increase in income was driven by a 10.2 per cent increase in net sales in the three months to June 30; the company reports net sales of 129,394 million yen (£1.0 billion) during the quarter. This sales increase came mainly through the company’s tyre business, Yokohama Rubber notes. Operating income during the quarter was 4,140 million yen (£33.1 million), a 29.9 per cent decrease.
