2011 a record year for Rolls-Royce

We are told that we are living in an age of austerity and belt-tightening, but this has not stopped Rolls-Royce Motor Cars announcing that 2011 was a record year for sales of the luxury marque. 3,538 cars were sold globally during the year, a 31per cent increase on the 2010 total of 2,711 cars. The figure represents the best sales result in the company's 107-year history; the previous record of 3,347 cars having been set in 1978 during the Silver Shadow II era.

Range Rover Evoque wins Detroit accolade

The Range Rover Evoque has been named the 2012 North American Truck of the Year. The announcement, which was made at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, saw the Evoque triumph over tough competition from the BMW X3 and the Honda CR-V. The judging panel of senior US automotive journalists chose the Evoque as the winner after reviewing it against its competitors in six key categories: value for the dollar, innovation, handling, performance, safety and driver satisfaction.

Bridgestone Americas launches sport-oriented brand campaign

In addition to its sponsorship of the Super Bowl halftime show – this year featuring performances by Madonna, Cirque du Soleil and others – Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations is investing in a new brand campaign that will air during the football final and other major sporting events. The first in a series of five television commercials debuted 2 January, and two of the sports-themed advertisements will be screened during the Super Bowl XLVI on 5 February.

No new future talks, workers angry at USW

Despite numerous reports that both sides were headed to a meeting with a federal mediator next week, it appears now that there will be no further negotiations between Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. and locked out USW workers at the tyre-maker’s Findlay, Ohio, plant, Tire Review reports. After both sides clearly stated that they would return to the bargaining table after the holidays and that a session with the mediator had been scheduled for 12 January, that supposed meeting was suddenly called off yesterday, with Cooper claiming that no such meeting was even scheduled.

Carlisle reels in fishy sponsorship deal

Tyre companies are no strangers to sport sponsorship. Motorsport deals have become almost de rigueur in some circles of late, and football has provided other manufacturers with a respectable alternative to on-track involvement. Yet the sporting world offers a plethora of opportunities; tapping one of the more unexpected of these is Carlisle Tire & Wheel, whose Radial Trail RH trailer tyre has been named official tyre of the 2012 American Bass Anglers Tour.

Stalemate over Cooper’s Findlay plant continues

Tire Review reports that the Christmas and New Year's holidays brought no relief to the dispute between Cooper Tire & Rubber and its union-represented workers at its Findlay plant. Some 1,050 union workers remained locked out through the holidays, and Tire Review indicates the two sides will take their stalemate to a federal mediator this week.

Yokohama to increase US prices

Taking pole position for this year's round of price rises is Yokohama Tire Corporation, who on 3 January announced a planned increase of up to eight per cent on all its commercial truck tyres in the US. The new prices will take effect 1 February, and the company says further in-line adjustments will be announced at a later date.

Kumho still committed to US plant

According to US news website Macon.com, Kumho Tire still intends to go ahead with its plant in Bibb County, Georgia. The site reported on 22 December that a Kumho delegation told local officials that the tyre maker remains committed to building the plant. “It is their expressed intent to build that plant and to build it here,” commented Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority attorney Kevin Brown at a recent meeting. “It’s costing them money not having that plant here. They need this in the United States.”

Locked out Cooper workers still await union strike fund aid

Even as a few hundred residents of Findlay, Ohio and locked-out Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. workers held a “community rally” this past weekend, Tire Review opines there may be some cracks appearing in the stalemate between the USW union and the tyre maker.

Under the radar – Titan’s latest purchases

Getting things done quietly has never been Titan International's strong suit, so the fact the firm apparently bought out two companies back in September may come as something of a surprise. Tire Review reports that Titan acquired tyre and retread mould maker Ohio Machine & Manufacturing Co. and wheel production equipment maker Automation International Inc. Both deals closed in September, according to chairman and CEO Morry Taylor, who disclosed the deals during a 13 December telephone presentation to financial analysts.

USW takes Cooper Findlay fight online

Contract negotiations at Cooper Tire & Rubber’s Findlay, Ohio plant are still ongoing, and US publication Tire Review reports the United Steel Workers union has launched a website to garner support for Local 207L members by signing a petition to send to Cooper Tire executives. The site, stopcoopertire.usw.org, also includes a video featuring locked-out workers and it encourages visitors to make a monetary donation, though it doesn't say what the money goes toward.

Another million incident-free hours for Cooper Tupelo plant

Workers at Cooper Tire & Rubber’s Findlay plant may still be locked out but at Cooper’s facility in Tupelo, Mississippi, employees reached one million man-hours without a lost-time incident during the course of this week. The achievement marks the second time Cooper's Tupelo employees reached the million-hour mark; in September 2010 they also passed a million hours without a lost-time case.

Falken sets New Year price increase in North America

Tire Review reports that Falken Tire Corp has informed its dealers that it will be increasing passenger and light truck/SUV tyre prices by up to 5 per cent, with some inline adjustments. The increase, the 103rd announced industry-wide for North America this year, will be effective from 1 January, 2012.

Bridgestone seeks tax break for US plant

Bridgestone Americas appears to be seeking a five-year tax break as an incentive for it to make a planned US$20 million capital investment at its OTR tyre plant in Bloomington, Illinois, reports Tire Review. A proposal before local authorities would see property tax on the plant locked into its current rate for five years, even when the tyre maker makes improvements to the facility – Bridgestone intends to add plant equipment that would enable the manufacture of 25-inch OTR radials in Bloomington.

Wheel separation risk prompts major Ford recall

A wheel and tyre-related issue has prompted the Ford Motor Company to recall up to almost 130,000 vehicles in the US. The manufacturer has informed government safety body the NHTSA that it is recalling certain 2010 and 2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan models, specifically vehicles equipped with 17-inch steel wheels that were built between 1 and 30 April 2009 and from 1 December 2009 through to 13 November 2010.
