Hankook to receive US plant site in August

According to local body the Clarksville-Montgomery County Industrial Development Board, the site of Hankook Tire America’s future 140,000 square metre (1.5 million square foot) factory in the US state of Tennessee will be ready by 31 August. Board executive director Mike Evans said “we’re going to do everything we can to get the site ready to turn over to them by that time.” Evans told the full board that a contractor to handle the site work is expected to be selected shortly after a meeting on 17 March.

Conti planning to grow workforce by 7,000 this year

Assuming the market develops according to expectations, Continental intends to increase its global employee count by around 7,000 in 2014. This would bring the number on its payroll to approximately 185,000 by the end of the year. This is about 50,000 jobs more than in 2009, during the midst of the financial crisis. At the end of 2013, the employee count had reached around 178,000, with 50,000 of these positions based in the company’s home country, Germany.

Brembo revenues, profits up in 2013

Brake manufacturer Brembo S.p.A. has posted positive results for 2013 despite an 11.2 per cent drop in net profit during the final quarter of the year. The company’s revenues grew 12.8 per cent to €1.6 billion in 2013 while EBITA rose 23.5 per cent to €212.1 million, with a margin of 13.5 per cent. EBIT increased 35.6 per cent to €121.4 million, with a margin of 7.8 per cent. Net profit rose 14.4 per cent year-on-year to €89.0 million in 2013.

Conti anticipating minor tyre market growth in 2014

This year, Continental expects to sell a total of 11 million more tyres in the European and the NAFTA replacement markets than in 2013. Speaking at the company’s press day in Hannover, Germany today, Continental CEO Dr. Elmar Degenhart stated that the tyre maker anticipates an increase of two per cent in these two regions, markets he said were “very important to our tyre replacement business”. He added that together with further growth effects in Asia and South America, Continental is looking forward to its global replacement tyre business rising three per cent this year. In regards to the original equipment segment, the CEO said Continental expects global production of passenger cars, SUVs and light commercial vehicles to increase by about two per cent.

Bridgestone makes 3 commercial segment appointments

Bridgestone has announced three new US-based marketing appointments within its Bridgestone Commercial Solutions business. Matt Loos has been promoted to director of truck and bus marketing, Michelle Lane has been promoted to director of off-the-road marketing, and Cassandra Kilareski has joined the Bridgestone Commercial Solutions marketing team as senior manager of marketing communications and digital.

BKT the official tyre of Monster Jam

Monster Jam, the US-based Monster Truck event tour, has signed BKT Tires on as its official and exclusive tyre sponsor. Through to 2018, BKT will have an on-site presence at Monster Jam events held in over 100 cities in North America, and will also go international with Monster Jam in the near future. As part of the deal, the off-road tyre specialist has designed and developed a purpose-made tyre, the BKT Monster Jam Tire, for fitment on the Monster Jam truck fleet.

Hundreds of jobs to go as Michelin cuts production at Canadian plant

Production and workforce numbers at Michelin’s Granton plant in Nova Scotia, Canada will decrease between now and July 2015, the tyre maker shares. On 3 March the company announced plans to reduce passenger car and light truck tyre output there in response to declining demand for small-size car tyres.

US debut for Magna M-Straddle port tyre at ConExpo

Magna Tyres says it will launch its new Magna M-Straddle tyre in the US at next week’s ConExpo show in Las Vegas. The radial M-Straddle, available in tyre size 16.00R25, is specifically designed for use on straddle carriers in demanding port and terminal conditions. ConExpo is the first exhibition in the US where the M-Straddle will be showed.

Out of service and into the record books for Goodyear blimp

With the first of its new Zeppelin airships scheduled to enter service later this year, Goodyear Tire & Rubber has retired its blimp Spirit of Goodyear after 14 years in the air. The company’s longest continuous operated airship had its last day out providing aerial coverage at last weekend’s Daytona 500 race. It was joined by the Spirit of Innovation blimp over the Daytona International Speedway, a rare appearance of two Goodyear airships at the same event. Upon its decommissioning, the Spirit of Goodyear will gain a Guinness World Record for length of continuous operation.

Analysts: Goodyear break-up is bad news for Sumitomo

While the news that Goodyear is looking to exit its international joint venture with Sumitomo Rubber partly precipitated a 10 per cent intra-day leap in Goodyear’s share price, commentary on the latest financials published by Sumitomo suggest that the JV break-up the two companies are currently in arbitration over could be bad news for the Japanese tyre maker.

Goodyear racks up 60 years of NASCAR tyre supply

This year, Goodyear Tire & Rubber celebrates its 60th anniversary as a key supplier to the USA’s most popular motorsport – NASCAR. The tyre maker says its NASCAR tyre supply is one of the longest-running supplier relationships in racing, and in all of sports history. “All of us at Goodyear are extremely proud to celebrate 60 consecutive years of supplying race tyres to NASCAR and its drivers,” said Stu Grant, Goodyear’s general manager of global race tyres. “Since 1954 our involvement in NASCAR has been a proving ground for tyre development, helping Goodyear provide superior performance and innovation both on and off the track.”
