“The motorcycle market continued its upward trend in April, with sales up 7.3 per cent ahead of the same period last year and up 9.4 per cent year-to-date”, said Stephen Latham, Head of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) which represents motorcycle retailers across the UK. The National Motorcycle Dealer Association (NMDA) will be on hand to offer support and advice at the upcoming Motorcycle Trade Expo knowledge shop (20-22 January 2019 at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire). The NMDA represents the interests of motorcycle dealers in the UK and holds regular discussions with the relevant government departments and motorcycle manufacturers to raise industry concerns, and keep abreast of the latest changes to support its dealer members.
“2018 was a turbulent year for the motorcycle market, driven by political and economic uncertainty over Brexit. However, overall sale volumes were broadly in line with the previous year showing that consumers are still choosing to purchase new bikes,” said Stephen Latham, head of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) which represents motorcycle retailers across the UK.
Referring to the latest figures from the Motorcycle Industry Association, Stephen Latham, Head of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) which represents motorcycle retailers across the UK, said: “It is encouraging to see that registrations of motorcycles in the UK grew by 9.1 per cent in August from the same month last year”.
In number terms, August registrations are always low due to the volume of customers who prefer to wait until September to obtain the latest registration plate on their new machine. As a result of the monthly increase, the year to date picture shows a steady growth of 2 per cent for the first eight months of this year.
Year to date figures from the Motor Cycle Industry Association show that the market stands at 44,695 units registered – only 158 more bikes sold than the same period last year.
The Motor Cycle Industry Association is encouraged by the small rise in demand for motorcycles, though with the caveat that scooter registrations have declined. “Demand for motorcycles in February was up 1.2 per cent on the same period last year, registering 3943 units. However, scooter registrations were down -2.1 per cent,” said Stephen Latham, head of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA), which represents motorcycle retailers across the UK.
The latest figures released by the Motor Cycle Industry Association have shown an increase in demand for motorcycles, but it is not time to get carried away by this apparent success, according to the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA). “Demand for motorcycles in January was up 11.8 per cent on the same period last year, registering 5,458 units. However, this was expected as last year the market was flooded with a high volume of pre-registered bikes for sale,” said Stephen Latham, head of the NMDA.

“The NMDA is pleased to see that this year’s Autumn 2017 Dealer Attitude Survey received a high response rate of 36 per cent made up of nine main brands. Participants in this survey were made up of 75 per cent of independently owned franchise dealers, and 22 per cent privately owned groups. 61 per cent were single brand dealer’s whist the remainder of 39 per cent were multi-franchised.” commented Stephen Latham, Head of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA).
According to figures from the Motor Cycle Industry Association, registrations in October fell by -13.6 per cent compared to the same period last year and the year-to-date decline currently stands at -15.5 per cent. 7,406 bikes were registered in the month compared with 8,595 units in October 2016.
Motorcycle registrations in August fell by –17.8 per cent compared to the same period last year, with the total number of bikes being sold down to 6,856 units. “Demand for motorcycles continued its downward trend in August – marking eight consecutive months of decline in the market”, said Stephen Latham, head of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA).
The triggering of Article 50 and the decision to call a general election have been cited as factors in the 16 per cent decline in motorcycle sales registered by Motor Cycle Industry Association figures in April. 10,365 bikes were registered, compared to 12,343 bikes put on the road in the same period for 2016.
The NMDA Spring 2017 Dealer Attitude Survey, published on 9 May 2017, shows that the all-dealer average when asked about the overall value of the franchise remained static at 6.8 since the last survey in Autumn 2016. “The NMDA is pleased to see that this year’s Spring 2017 Dealer Attitude Survey received a response rate of 32 per cent. Participants in this survey were made up of 74 per cent of independently owned franchise dealers, and 24 per cent privately owned groups. 58 per cent were single brand dealer’s whist the remainder of 42 per cent were multi-franchised.” commented Stephen Latham, head of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA).
UK motorcycle registrations have dropped again in March, usually a strong month as new number plates are released and the riding season begins in earnest. Stephen Latham, head of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) said dealers had expected the market to be up, “however registrations were down -12.6 per cent – a huge drop of 2,103 machines compared with March last year.”
The Motor Cycle Industry Association has released the February figures for motorcycle registrations. Commenting on the figures, Stephen Latham, Head of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) which represents motorcycle retailers across the UK, said: “Following a surge in pre-registrations of Euro 3 machines in December, registrations were down in February -21.6 per cent compared with the same period last year.”
