Chinese Car Sales Power Ahead

Sales of cars in China during January were better than expected, according to figures from Deutsche Bank. At 307,000 units, this was a 70 per cent increase year on year, due partly to the pull forward effect of the Chinese New Year. Analysts forecast volume growth during this year of 53 per cent for passenger cars, with a string of new models in the pipeline, including the Honda Civic, Peugeot 206, Citroen C3, Nissan Silphy and MPV.

Sherbrook To Market Kosei Alloy Wheels

Japanese premium wheel brand, Kosei is to be exclusively marketed in the UK by Sherbrook International. The Kosei name will join the existing brands in Sherbrook’s portfolio, which includes Rondell, Outlaw and DJ. The Kosei brand will be available in sizes of up to 22 inches.

“Kosei is an established worldwide brand with a unique position in the top segment of the market,” said Sherbrook International CEO Peter Whitehouse. “The wheels are incredibly stylish, fashionable and of the moment. The appeal of Kosei is individual and exclusive and we are delighted to add it to our product portfolio.”

Alcoa Wheels Shown on Major Manufacturers in Detroit

As the automotive world converges in Detroit for the 2006 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), Alcoa Wheels Products say that the company is enjoying fitment on many new 2006 models.

Alcoa Wheel Products, a Cleveland-based business unit of Alcoa, has fitments on new production model vehicles including the Nissan Altima SE-R, Chrysler 300C SRT8, Dodge Charger SRT8, Dodge Ram 2500, Dodge Magnum SRT8, Dodge Viper and Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. Alcoa wheels are also being shown on Ford F250 trucks, including Ford’s Harley-Davidson Edition and on the GMC Envoy Denali, Hummer H2 and Pontiac Grand Prix GXP.

Michelin Launches Three X-Ice PAX Winter Tyres

(Akron/Tire Review) Michelin North America (MNA) has introduced three new Michelin X-Ice PAX system winter tyres that can be operated after a puncture for 125 miles at 50 mph, according to MNA. The Michelin X-Ice PAX System 225-700R480A, Michelin X-Ice PAX System 245-680R460A and Michelin X-Ice PAX System 235-710R460A tires are available now for the Nissan Quest, the Acura RL and the Honda Odyssey Touring Edition, respectively, stated MNA.

Falken to Exhibit at Autosport/Aftermarket Show

In January 2006, Falken High Performance Tyres will again be present when the doors open at the Aftermarket Show. At the Falken stand in the main hall visitors will be able to examine the new FK452 premium tyre, and the T110. Falken Tyres UK website will also be on show allowing visitors access to the dealer locator system, enabling them to find their local Falken supplier.

Another highlight will be the attendance of the Falken Girls who will be signing copies of their very own Falken Calendars and Posters. The stand will also include a race car simulator, featuring the Gran Turismo 4 computer game. From here visitors will be able to drive the Falken Nissan Skyline GT-R around the famous 20.8 kilometre long Nurburgring track.

Fulda have announced the launch of their brand new range of tyres designed specifically for 4×4 Sports Utility Vehicles on the road. Banner Expands Power Bull Range

Jaguar Plant Number One in US Initial Quality Study

Ford Motor Company’s Halewood Jaguar assembly has earned the Gold Plant Quality Award for assembly plant quality in the European region, according to the J D Power and Associates. The 2005 US Initial Quality Study (IQS) found that the Jaguar X-Type, receives a score of 70 problems per 100 vehicles, the best score among European plants assembling vehicles for export to the United States. The Halewood plant, which was first included in the IQS in 2002, has shown a 55 per cent quality improvement to 70 problems per hundred in 2005 from 157 in 2002.

Hi-Q Supports Topless Challenge

Hi-Q Stafford Tyres is helping a Stoke businessman complete a rather draughty charity challenge – driving to John O’Groats and back, in a car with no roof. John Stephenson, who came up with the idea whilst stuck in a traffic jam, is undertaking the ‘Z car challenge’ in aid of Douglas MacMillan Hospice based in Blurton, Stoke On Trent.

US SUV Sales Drop

(Akron/Tire Review) A report in the Detroit News says that SUV sales have dropped sharply as fuel prices in the US have continued to rise. The newspaper, citing a study by J.D. Power & Associates, said that full-size SUVs have been the hardest hit by the sales downturn. Sales of full-size SUVs were down 31 per cent in January and 21 per cent in February, according to the report.

Through February, sales of Chevy Suburbans were down 37.8 per cent, Hummer H2s were down 32.6 per cent, Ford Expedition sales fell 24.4 per cent and Toyota Sequoia sales were down 14.4 per cent, said the report. Still, some models showed increases, including the Nissan Armada (+33.5%), Dodge Durango (+17.3%), and the Cadillac Escalade ESV (+8.8%), the report noted. A Ford analyst quoted by the paper said, “Gas prices probably accelerated a trend already under way. The best days for those products (large SUVs) are behind us.”

USWA Pickets Unfair

(Akron/TR) “Informational pickets” set up by United Steelworkers of America (USWA) locals representing Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire (BFNAT) plants are causing concerns amongst owners of Nissan car dealerships who say such action is unfair and hurts their businesses.

UK Vehicle Production Slips

UK car production fell 3.7 per cent or 5,286 units in January 2005, reports the SMMT. At the same time output for the home market climbed 4.3 per cent. However, production for export markets fell by 7.5 per cent, compared to a growth of 12.4 per cent a year ago.

USWA Pressurises Bridgestone

While contract talks between the USWA and Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire (BFNAT) progress, the union plans to increase pressure on the tyremaker to come to an agreement, reports Tire Review.

BFNAT union workers have been working without a master contract since April 2003. The two sides have been working off the previous contract on a day-to-day basis. Talks broke off in November 2003, and did not resume again until December 2004.
