Survey shows half of motorists neglect maintenance

New research commissioned by one of the UK’s leading motor industry bodies has revealed 50 per cent of Britain’s motorists neglect vital vehicle maintenance checks including oil, tyres and lights – all essential to ensuring the safety of their cars. This equates to a staggering 18 million drivers when equated to the 36 million motorists on UK roads.

The survey of 1,000 motorists by Trusted Dealers, the consumer-facing website of the National Franchised Dealer Association, found one in three drivers (32 per cent) are unaware how often their vehicle should be serviced, with almost seven per cent (6.8 per cent) of motorists admitting they never undertake routine vehicle checks.

Research commissioned by the National Franchised Dealer Association (NFDA) suggests half of Britain’s motorists neglect vital vehicle maintenance checks including oil, tyres and lights. NFDA comments on August car sales increase

Following the SMMT’s publication of new car registration figures for August 2014, the National Franchised Dealers Association has predicted that September, and the newly introduced 64-plate, will bring further increases.

UK car market continues to grow in July figures

July registrations figures show that 172,907 new cars were registered in July, according to the SMMT, a rise of 6.6 per cent and the 29th consecutive month of growth. Economic confidence and attractive finance are said to have driven the rejuvenated market up 10.1 per cent year-to-date to 1,460,172 units. As a result of the faster-than-expected first half growth, the SMMT has upped its 2014 market forecast to 2.45 million registrations, up 8.1 per cent on 2013.

Light commercial registrations up 14.7 per cent

The latest light commercial vehicle figures released show 2013 total registrations to 327,291 units, up 14.7 per cent. Vans rose 13.1 per cent over the year registering 271,073 units, boosted by 32.5 per cent growth in December. Truck registrations totalled 56,218 units in the year, up 23 per cent with the move to Euro 6 fuelling growth as predicted.

Double digit rise in August car sales

In the UK, August is traditionally a slow month for sales of new cars, as people hold on for the change of registration plate which happens in September, with only around three per cent of sales during the month. September, by contrast, typically accounts for over 17 per cent of full year registrations.

Inflation fell in July

Inflation fell in July but analysts suggest households continue to struggle against falling incomes. The consumer price index (CPI) measure remained well above the Bank of England's target, at 2.8 per cent, while the broader retail price index, was 3.1 per cent. The retail price index (RPI) measure of inflation used as a basis to set train fares as well as negotiate pay deals eased to 3.1 per cent in July from 3.3 per cent in June.

July CV sales "stable" says NFDA

New light commercial vehicle figures show overall sales were down 0.6 per cent in July but up 6.5 per cent year-to-date. Van sales dipped 2.6 per cent last month but remained 9.3 per cent ahead year-to-date. "It is positive to see that the commercial vehicle market remained stable during July, with a healthy increase in the truck sector of 10.3 per cent" said Sue Robinson, Director of the NFDA, commenting on the SMMT's van and truck registration figures.

SMMT 'Minute or Two' campaign faces independent backlash

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) has reacted strongly to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) and National Franchised Dealers Association’s (NFDA) ‘Minute Or Two’ MOT campaign, saying is “a blatant attempt to drive business away from independent garages.”

Survey shows improvement in franchised dealer/manufacturer relationships

Franchised vehicle dealers believe there has been an overall improvement in the day to day relationship with their manufacturer. Sales incentive programmes and improved profitability boosted partnerships, according to the National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA) Dealer Attitude Survey Winter 2012/2013 results.

November motorcycle sales down

The market for motorcycles in November shows a decline of 3.2 per cent in a year where the market has experienced a mere 0.1 per cent growth for the year to date.

Sue Robinson, director of the National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA)/Motorcycle Retailers Association (MRA) commented "Of particular concern is the slowdown in the 51-125cc commuter bike market that has performed throughout the year with an increase in the year to date of 9.3 per cent. However, in November the 51-125cc market experienced a downward fall of 6.8 per cent. This is a strong indication that economic pressures are affecting basic purchases of lower priced motorcycles that many consumers consider an essential form of commuter transport."

Changes to MOT certificates to prevent 'clocking'

VOSA has announced that the MOT certificate must now record the mileage of a vehicle for the current test, as well as the mileage recorded on the last three certificates. This change comes into effect on 18 November 2012 and means a more accurate vehicle history can be relayed to the potential buyer of a used car.
