Travis Kang, president of Nexen Tire and son of company chairman Byung-Joong Kang, has taken on the additional role of chief executive officer. He succeeds Lee Hyun-Bong, who had held the position since 2010. Kang junior’s assumption of this second senior office was confirmed at the Nexen Tire annual shareholders’ meeting, which took place on 17 February.
Nexen Tire is celebrating success in the recent ACE Lenkrad tyre test where its N’blue HD Plus (195/65 R15 91V) was ranked ‘Test Winner’ by the well-regarded German automobile magazine.
In the most recent Auto Club Europa (ACE) comparative test of competitively priced tyres, the ranking of the newest GT Radial touring tyre, the Champiro FE1, has caused consternation with the manufacturer. ACE-GTU ranked the tyre bottom in the test, with its performance in the wet causing particular concern, despite the fact that the tyre carries a B rating for wet grip on the tyre label. In response, Giti sent a testing team based at Mira in Leicestershire, to re-examine its tyre at Idiada, the proving ground near Barcelona at which the ACE test was carried out. Giti also released a full statement to Tyres & Accessories, explaining that it was investigating all avenues to explain why the results recorded by ACE-GTU did not match its own findings.

Having launched at Autopromotec in May 2015, the Oak Group’s Davanti Tyres private brand has grown quickly, with the appointments of Sean Maddocks to UK and Ireland sales director, and Andrew Billingham and Andy Kent as regional sales managers. In addition to growing the management team, the brand has undergone a series of benchmarking tests for its current passenger car tyres at the large Applus+ Idiada proving ground near Barcelona, which has grown in stature since 1994 to become what is widely thought of as Europe’s premier independent facility – an opinion backed by the comparatively large number of tyre manufacturers currently testing on site.

Stapleton’s says its own extensive delivery fleet has informed its approach to the van and light commercial vehicle market; from the large fleet manager to the man in a van, a van off the road is a van that is losing money. The tyre wholesaler states that the cost and potential damage to customer relations of a van being out of action means the retailer needs to offer the right tyre quickly.
Nexen Tire is to launch its first European TV advertising campaign on Eurosport, Europe’s No.1 sports channel. The 30-second commercial will air across 54 European countries for 6 months, from December 2015 to May 2016 via Eurosport, which includes Eurosport 1, Eurosport 2, and Eurosport 2 NEE.
Stapleton’s investment in recent years has been focused on its nationwide distribution operation – including new regional hubs and a larger delivery fleet – the wholesaler said. “It’s all been in response to the retailers’ needs – and we’re gratified by their response to the flexible and responsive operation we’ve created, with faster and more frequent deliveries,” comments Nigel O’Hara, Stapleton’s wholesale director. Retailer feedback has confirmed Stapleton’s customers want to stock a variety of tyre solutions at every price point, but especially in the fiercely competitive mid-market sector. The wholesaler has a range of exclusive brands in this segment, including Maxxis, Nexen, Matador, Event and Riken.
On 1 October 2015 Nexen Tire broke ground on the site of its new plant in Zatec, Czech Republic. The company has committed to investing more than 829 million euros in building the new plant on 650,000 square metres of land in Zatec.
In its annual winter tyre performance survey, German motoring publication AutoBild narrows a wide field of 49 winter tyres and two all-season tyres with wet and snow braking measurements before conducting a full test of a range of characteristics. 19 tyres made it through to the 2015/16 season test, conducted using the tyre size 185/60 R15.

This creates a window of opportunity as well as a challenge for the tyre retailer: a fast-growing market for high quality replacement tyres, and a wider breadth of stock required to cope with the specialist sector. This, Stapleton’s says, is where the wholesaler comes in.
On 31 August, Nexen Tire announced that it will supply Volkswagen with its N’blue Premium tyre for the new Volkswagen Caddy, a compact van with global sales topping 1.5 million units over the past 11 years. The vehicle will be produced in Poznan, Poland and the tyres Nexen supplies will be 195/65 R15 products.
