Around one year ago, Bridgestone entered into a technical partnership with Belgian motorcycle brand Saroléa, designer of the Saroléa SP7 electric superbike. The tyre maker delivered technical support and tyre expertise for the manufacturer’s track testing and racing ambitions, which last year included the TT Zero Challenge at the Isle of Man TT series. Saroléa finished fourth at its debut appearance, and in 2015 will again look to Bridgestone for further expertise.
Prior to the start of yesterday’s Malaysian Grand Prix, Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery expected teams to make three tyre change stops during the race. Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel opted to stop only twice, and this may well have been the decisive factor in his 8.57 second victory over Lewis Hamilton. The Malaysian GP victory was the first win for Vettel and Ferrari since 2013, and this fourth victory in Malaysia – the 40th of his career – means that Vettel is now the most successful driver in the history of the Malaysian Grand Prix.
Kumho Tire Europe reports the relocation of its motorsport division from Birmingham to Germany. It gave word of the shift to Offenbach am Main, where the tyre maker’s European headquarters are situated, upon announcing the appointment of Manfred Theisen as head of Kumho’s European motorsport division. Theisen began in his new role in January 2015; prior to his appointment he held similar positions of responsibility within Dunlop and Yokohama’s motorsport departments.

The 24H Dubai is currently taking place, and for the first time ever, Hankook Tire is serving as title sponsor and exclusive tyre partner to the event. Qualifying and night practice for the race began yesterday, with the Hankook 24H Dubai 2015 race itself getting underway at 1.30pm local time (9.30am GMT/UTC). This season-opener in the United Arab Emirates doubles as the flagship event and curtain-raiser for the ‘24H Series powered by Hankook,’ which was recently granted official international series status by the FIA.
Bridgestone says it is “ramping up its plans to make 2015 a year to remember in the world of motocross” after securing the services of a multiple British champion to promote its tyre range. Paul Malin will add his presence to Bridgestone’s day of riding at Apex Motocross in Worcester on 19 February, which will showcase the brand’s X30 and X40 motocross tyres. Seven-time Dakar Rally competitor Mick Extance will also get to grips with the tyres during a day that promises to be one of the biggest and most comprehensive motocross events ever organised by Bridgestone.
At the Bologna Motor Show Pirelli introduced a new range of hillclimb tyres for the most powerful cars in the sport.

Just over six months since the last time Tyres & Accessories met Michel Rzonzef at the Geneva Motor Show, the Goodyear executive has switched segments. When we met before he was vice president of the Consumer Tire Business at Goodyear EMEA. Now he is vice president of Commercial Tires EMEA. So, with the move from consumer to commercial still relatively fresh, T&A took the opportunity to discuss the development and direction of the truck and fleet tyre business with Rzonzef during the course of the recent Goodyear Fleet Symposium in Brussels on 14 October. Henk van Tuyl, Goodyear’s director of regional technology – Heavy Tires EMEA, also joined in with the conversation.

Michelin will provide Renault Sport with a new 18-inch Pilot Sport S9L tyre for new Renault Sport RS 01 as part of its association with the World Series by Renault (WSR). Based on Michelin’s so-called ‘customer competition’ range, the tyre will also be available for all GT3 competitors from 2015.
A month from now, 40 electric racing cars will line up on the grid at the inaugural Formula E Championship race in Beijing. Each of the tyres that take to the track on 13 September will be fitted with identical tyres that were specifically developed for the competition. In a Michelin-hosted Q&A session, the company’s motorsport director Pascal Couasnon explains that the decision that all cars should run on Pilot Sport EV tyres was not simply a strategic option in technology terms; he says it was also an obvious choice.
