Loeb victorious at X Games on Cooper tyres

Cooper Tire describes the X Games Rallycross Final in Los Angeles as the world’s highest profile Rallycross event, and the company was pleased to support the eventual winner, eight-time World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb, with its tyres on his successful debut. Loeb was invited to make a one-off rallycross appearance by US regular Travis Pastrana and took a crushing debut victory in front of the American crowd in his Citroën DS3, leading home the Ford Fiestas of Ken Block and Brian Deegan in second and third respectively.

Yokohama seals maiden 2012 IRC class win in San Marino

Yokohama-shod Jarkko Nikara claimed his first class victory, four minutes ahead of the next Production Cup driver, in the 2012 Intercontinental Rally Challenge Production Cup, claiming fifth overall on the San Marino Rally. Nikara and co-driver Jarkko Kalliolepo led the event from the first stage in their Tommi Makinen Racing Subaru Impreza R4 and claimed the Japanese brand's first event win of 2012 with a margin of more than four minutes.

Pirelli supplies tyres to Myerscough motorsport students

Pirelli has provided motorsport students from Myerscough College with competition tyres for the Ford Fiesta R2 rally car they are building as part of their course. Based in Lancashire, northwest England, Myerscough College boasts seven motorsport workshops and several competition cars for the continuing development and expansion of motorsport teaching. The college believes that hands-on experience is an important aspect of learning and therefore encourages students to take part in a wide range of motorsport events throughout the UK.

Maxxis sweeps podium at Teesside in BDC

The Maxxis British Drift Championship completed the first half of its season at the Teesside Autodrome, and the title sponsor’s MAZ1 Drift tyres were used to great effect by the pace-setters; the Maxxis-sponsored Team Japspeed and SATS Motorsport took the top three places in the Super Pro class, while the former team claimed an unexpected victory in the Team Triple Drift Event. Meanwhile the BDC will be represented by the Infinity Tyres and distributor Bond International sponsored Acorn Motorsport Division (AMD) at ‘Drift Experience’ when it visits the Santa Pod Raceway on 26 July.

Pedrosa takes third win at Sachsenring in MotoGP

Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa won the German Grand Prix to secure his third consecutive triumph at Sachsenring, having used Bridgestone’s hardest compound MotoGP tyres to combat the heavy abrasion of the circuit. Shinji Aoki – manager, Bridgestone Motorsport Tyre Development Department said that the company had “advised some riders to use the harder rear slick” following analysis completed during the warm-up session, and while all but one rider fitted the extra hard front slicks for greater cornering stability and durability, the field was split on rear tyre choice, with all CRT riders using the softer medium compound.

Webber prevails in Silverstone tactical challenge

The British Grand Prix took place in dry weather against all the odds, though drenched practice and qualifying sessions – not to mention waterlogged car parks – made choosing a definitive tyre strategy impossible, since little information was available to teams about how their cars would use the available rubber. Red Bull’s tactics prevailed, with Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel both achieving podium finishes, sandwiching Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, who held onto his lead of the Drivers Championship with a second place earned only after an intense battle for supremacy with Webber. Webber is the second driver, after Alonso, to reach two Grand Prix victories this season.

Pirelli’s supply to Formula One this year has not been without the occasional controversy – Michael Schumacher’s “raw eggs” comment being just one example – but there is no arguing that it’s raised the profile of tyres within the sport. Evidence of their prominent role was seen today by those thumbing through The Sun, who would have read the headline that the “real F1 heroes are…tyre boffins.”

Nankang introduces new products and ‘brand’ new chapter at Reifen

On its Hall Three stand and during an evening event at Essen’s central Mövenpick Hotel, Nankang unveiled its new logo at Reifen 2012 alongside two new products. The Taiwanese company’s staff also presented the array of new lines it has recently introduced, in addition to previewing its latest asymmetric tyre, the AS-2, which is in the “final evaluation” stage of its development. Manufactured in Taiwan (“14,000 pieces per day”) and China (“25,000 pieces per day”), Nankang turned over 461 million euros in 2011, and with 40 per cent of its sales, Nankang said that Europe is by far its biggest market (comparing favourably with 18 per cent in North America and 15 per cent in Asia). The company also presented its comparative sales figures in Europe over the past five years, which showed a dip from 120 million euros in 2007 to a nadir of 97 million in 2009 – having ascended significantly in 2010, the figure now stands at 184 million euros in 2011. The company also noted the growing demand for its winter tyres in Europe, which has climbed from 0.336 million in 2008 to 1.215 million in 2011. It is, according to the company, “the main line we are focusing on.”

Pirelli: No complaints on F1 tyre consistency

Pirelli Motorsport director Paul Hembery has told Spanish newspaper El Confidencial that rumours suggesting the company is supplying tyres of inconsistent quality to Formula One teams have not led to any official complaints being made. Hembery was responding to a suggestion that there are “serious differences” between tyres of the same compound made by Red Bull’s Dr Helmut Marko. Grands Prix have been surprisingly open to competition in the 2012 season, with seven different winners in eight races, and while Hembery takes credit for the tyres adding to the excitement of the racing, it is also clear that some of the top teams’ feathers have been ruffled by the more competitive championship.

Pirelli tyres “work well” in difficult Scottish Rally conditions

Pirelli’s rally tyres were tested by sodden conditions at Saturday’s rain-soaked RSAC Scottish Rally, round five of the MSA Scottish Rally Championship. Reigning British rally champions, David Bogie and co-driver Kevin Rae, charged to their fourth victory of the season at the wheel of a Pirelli KM6-equipped Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9.

Gilbert extends Pirelli Mini Challenge lead

Henry Gilbert extended his lead in the Pirelli-backed MINI Challenge at Snetterton 300. The MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S race cars raced over two classes at the fourth round of the seven-round series: the John Cooper Works (JCW) class and the Club class. The JCW class was provided with slick and wet options: the 225/625-17 DH slick and 225/625-17 WS wet tyre. For the second time this season, Pirelli DH slicks and N3 wets were available to the Club class.

Pirelli brings new hard compound to Silverstone

Formula One moves on from street circuit season to return to Silverstone for the British Grand Prix on 6-8 July. During Friday’s free practice, the teams will be able to test a new development hard P Zero compound, the first new compound to be tried during a race weekend in 2012. Teams will have two sets of the experimental hard tyre in addition to their usual allocation, before reverting to the standard P Zero Silver hard compound and P Zero Yellow soft compound for the rest of the race weekend. The Cinturato Green intermediate and Cinturato Blue wet will almost certainly be used at some point during the weekend as Britain’s wet summer continues – indeed Pirelli has never experienced a completely dry race at Silverstone. The tyre supplier says the meeting can be considered a second home race, since its motorsport hub – a centre of excellence – is located in Didcot, Oxfordshire around an hour away.

Bridgestone to investigate MotoGP rear tyre destruction

The general manager of Bridgestone Motorsport’s Tyre Development Department, Shinichi Yamashita has promised to investigate personally the reason why chunks of rubber fell off riders Valentino Rossi’s and Ben Spies’ medium compound slick rear tyres at round seven of MotoGP 2012. Hiroshi Yamada – manager, Bridgestone Motorsport Department, also apologised on behalf of the company: “I am sorry that some riders experienced tyre problems during the race. We are now investigating the issue and will report back to teams with our findings at the next race.” The Dutch TT, held at Assen, on Saturday 30 June 2012 was won by Casey Stoner, who capped an impressive weekend for the Repsol Honda team to take his third win of the season ahead of teammate Dani Pedrosa in warm, dry weather.

WSBK riders to test next year’s rubber

On 2 July Superbike teams and riders will be given their first opportunity to experience Pirelli’s new 17-inch Diablo Superbike tyres for themselves. The tyre maker has confirmed a test day will be held at the Aragòn circuit in Spain next Monday for riders to check out prototypes of the tyre size the Superbike World Championship will run on as of next year. As part of the day’s programme, riders will initially ride on the current 16.5-inch tyres for a few laps – the same tyres available for this weekend’s race – before moving on to the 17-inch tyres. Pirelli says four 17-inch front tyres and four rear tyres will be used; in order to make a direct comparison easier, both these and the 16.5-inch tyres will feature the same compound, SC1.

Pirelli fantasy game a ‘nice tie-in’ with National Motorsport Week

Pirelli has confirmed its support for National Motorsport Week 2012, which will take place between 30 June and 8 July. The week-long annual initiative, jointly promoted by the Motorsport Industry Association and the Motor Sports Association, is a celebration of motorsport book-ended by two of the country’s premier motorsport events: the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Santander British Formula One Grand Prix. National Motorsport Week features a wide range of initiatives and activities, ranging from novice taster events run by local motor clubs to factory visits and open days at many of the UK’s premier motorsport organisations.
