Maxxis Signs Exclusive UK Distribution Deal With Group Tyre

Maxxis is setting its sights higher for 2007 having signed an exclusive distribution agreement with Group Tyre (UK) Ltd – the UK’s leading independent tyre wholesaling operation – to grow its PCR business in the UK. In addition to the distribution agreement with Group Tyre (UK) Ltd, Maxxis plans to build a network of ‘centres of excellence’ utilising Group Tyre’s experience to target national, regional and local retailers. Maxxis will assist Group Tyre (UK) Ltd to recruit retailers as Maxxis Centres by providing a package of signage, advertising, POS, literature and merchandise.

Swansea First Stop Dealership Renews Charity Pledge

A Swansea First Stop dealership is renewing its support for a campaign raising vital funds for impoverished and neglected youngsters in South Wales. It is the third year running that Harris Brothers Tyres will be the headline sponsor of radio stations ’The Wave’ and ‘Swansea Sound’s’ Cash for Kids initiative. Last year alone the business worked with the stations to help raise more than £30,000 for good causes. That included a £10,000 donation to Childline following a glitzy ball and auction where Esther Rantzen was the special guest of honour.

Goodyear Launches Eagle F1 Asymmetric

Goodyear has launched a new tyre designed to replace the much vaunted Eagle F1 GSD3, which scored top marks in almost every test going – including Auto Express, Autocar, Max Power, Evo and Which? But while the old tyre’s symmetrical tread design was key to the product’s success, Goodyear is expecting the new product to succeed exactly because it isn’t. In addition to an asymmetrical tread design, the Eagle F1 Assymmetric features an asymmetric casing construction designed to reinforce one side and squeeze more grip from the tyre. Goodyear representatives told Tyres & Accessories they were gearing up for more award success following the introduction of the ‘Active Cornergrip Technology’ into the design of its latest tyre.

F1 Drivers Lukewarm About New Tyres

Kimi Raikkonen has added his voice to that of Robert Kubica in complaining that Bridgestone’s 2007-spec Formula One tyres do not suit his driving style. BMW driver Kubica was the first driver to air his concerns about the harder Bridgestone compounds following tests last December.

When Autosport asked Raikkonen at Jerez whether he thought that the tyres suited his driving style the Finn replied, “No, not really”. He added “I think we need to work on the car to make it work for me. It is getting better all the time but it takes time to get used to (the tyres).”

Pirelli Control Tyre for Australian GTP

The Australian Performance Car Championship (GTP) is expected to be a more closely contested competition following the announcement that all cars in the series will be required to race on identical Pirelli “control” tyres. Series Organiser Craig Nayda announced that Pirelli motorsport distributor Trofeo Motorsport has won a tender to provide tyres and event technical support to GTP for the next three seasons.

Getting Competitive with Dunlop

With Dunlop’s new product activity in 2006 restricted to the release of the niche market D407 Harley Davidson tyre and the Sportmax GPR100 maxi scooter tyre, the main excitement coming from the Dunlop camp centres upon racing and motorsport. And this enthusiasm comes from the very top – in the past few months the company has publicly voiced its intention to step up support for both motorcycle racing and MotoGP.

Another New F1 Tyre Rule Proposed

The FIA is reportedly planning to impose an alternative to the controversial ‘red tyre rule’ during the 2007 Formula One season. Autosport magazine has reported that, in addition to the new regulation requiring drivers to race both the ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ compound tyres Bridgestone supplies for each Grand Prix event, teams could also be asked to publish their initial tyre choice.

Avon Tyres joins Brabham in MSA British Race Elite initiative

Avon Tyres is to link up with ex-Formula 1 driver, David Brabham, as an official partner in the new MSA British Race Elite programme. The initiative, launched at the Autosport International Show, is designed to offer selected promising young British racing drivers the chance to develop their skills by giving technical insights into every aspect of motor racing, from tyre technology to physical fitness and mind coaching.

Pirelli Chosen as BRC Control Tyre

Pirelli has been selected as the control tyre for the Tesco 99 Octane MSA British Rally Championship (BRC). A three-year agreement between Pirelli Tyres and the BRC will lead to, in the view of the BRC, a more equal competition in which the driver’s talent and ability can be showcased during the six-round championship. The decision to switch to a single tyre supplier comes after a control fuel was successfully introduced at the start of the 2006 season.

Michelin Launches Pilot Road 2

Michelin has launched the Pilot Road 2, unveiling its latest dual compound offering at the Motorcycle Trade Expo at Stoneleigh Park. The French manufacturer claims that its latest product means riders no longer have to compromise between wet grip and tread life. Michelin hopes results of tests conducted by CERM will help convince retailers and the motorcycle riding public of this.

Update – F1 Red Tyre Rule

Further to our recent news regarding the Formula One ‘red tyre rule’, it appears that official agreement on the regulations has not as yet been reached. While Bridgestone is happy that the issue has been raised, Bridgestone Motorsport has not at this time held any official discussions with the FIA and the competing teams regarding the proposal. Tyres and Accessories apologises for any confusion our previous news article may have created.

F1 ‘Red Tyres’ Unlikely

Despite Bridgestone’s support of the idea, it appears that red tyres are unlikely to be a part of the 2007 Formula One season. It now seems all but inevitable that the different rubber compounds required by Article 77c of the FIA Sporting Regulations will hit the racetrack without any accompanying visual identifier.
