Report raises safety fears on UK road markings

A report ('Lifelines 2012') by the Road Safety Markings Association (RSMA) says that the quality of road markings in the UK is "in rapid decline" and accuses the Department for Transport and the Highways Agency of failing to grasp the urgency of the problem.

The survey looked at 7250km of UK roads and found that 40 per cent of markings on Scotland's motorways and dual carriageways and dual carriages in Wales need immediate replacement. The figures for England's motorways and dual carriageways were 38 per cent and 36 per cent respectively. 44 per cent of markings on Highways Agency single carriageways fall into what RSMA calls the "danger or warning zones".

They also agree that those who fail to get out of the way of an emergency vehicle should be fined. This approach is being trialled in Europe.

Motorists waste £50 million defrosting cars

UK motorists will waste nearly £50 million of fuel this winter by leaving their cars to idle with the engine running in order to defrost them, a new study of regular drivers by Direct Line Car Insurance has discovered.
The fuel wasted equates to over 300 million road miles and would enable someone to drive an average size car more than 13,000 times around the world.

FTA welcomes consultation

As if fuel wasn't expensive enough…

Financially, filling your petrol tank can be a sobering experience, but, according to figures from Halfords Autocentres, for 300,000 UK drivers a year, the cost can be astronomical. The reason? A misfuelling mishap, which can cost anything from £500 to £3,000 to rectify, once costs such as garage call-outs, refilling the tank and additional transport costs are factored in. Even worse news for the motorist, says Halfords, is that only half of the misfuelling motorists are able to claim the costs back on their insurance.

French go easy on breathalyser offenders

Fines for drivers of all motor vehicles – including motorcyclists, – who are caught without a breathalyser kit, will be implemented in France from March 2013, according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists. The fines were due to be enforced from 1 November 2012.

TyreSafe offers 147 reasons to consider winter tyres

TyreSafe is encouraging motorists to consider fitting winter tyres, offering 147 reasons why they should. The 147 refers to the number of times temperatures fell below seven degrees Celsius during prime commuting hours on 147 separate days between the beginning of October 2011 and the end of March 2012, according to the Met Office.

IAM launches winter driving campaign

Road safety charity the Institute of Advanced Motorists has launched its winter driving campaign this week to help motorists prepare their cars and drive them safely this winter. The campaign includes a website, drivingadvice.org.uk, containing advice, traffic updates and weather forecasts. The IAM will also be publishing weekly news releases and driving tips in reaction to the winter weather as part of the campaign.
