Safety Concerns Drive Kwik-Fit Brake Business Boom

Kwik-Fit Fleet says that safety concerns by fleets have led to record levels of company car and van brake inspection and replacement work.

Last year, Kwik-Fit Fleet launched a major brake initiative aimed at winning an increased share of the UK company car brake replacement market. The result was an increase in the volume of fleet-specific brake work at the company’s centres of 41 per cent on 2003 levels. And this trend has continued in the first half of this year, with a near 40 per cent rise in fleet brake-related work compared with the first six months of 2004.

Warranties Continue to Confuse Motorists

A national survey has found that many motorists wrongly believe they have to take their car to a manufacturer’s franchised dealership for servicing. Hi-Q conducted a nation-wide survey of over 400 motorists to question just what people understand about their warranty.

Only 30 per cent of people believed their warranty would be valid if they took their car to a garage other than the manufacturer’s dealer. 38 per cent believed their warranty would be broken if they took the car to an alternative independent garage and 32 per cent didn’t know either way.

Under Inflated Tyres Cost UK Motorists £1 Billion

Avon Tyres believes motorists are wasting more than £1 billion a year and increasing the risk of accidents by not checking tyre pressures. According to the manufacuturer’s calculations, up to 90 per cent of vehicles on Britain’s roads do not have the correct pressure in their tyres.

This, in turn, is believed to have a knock effect that stings consumers to the tune of an extra £230 million on new tyres every year. Researchers said that at any one time, 90 per cent of vehicles had at least one tyre under-inflated by 10 per cent of the recommended pressure. This equates to a 15 per cent reduction in the life expectancy of the tyre or an extra £5.12 per year cost to the driver – or £230 million if extended to all UK drivers.

Kayaba Shocks OE on Impreza

Kayaba has landed another OE shock absorber contract, this time with Subaru for the latest generation Impreza. KYB branded shock absorbers and struts will be fitted on all Impreza models, including the high performance WRX STi.

Mr. Hajime Sato, MD of Kayaba Europe, said: “Supplying such an innovative manufacturer as Subaru is great for the Kayaba brand. Our advanced technological developments in both OE and aftermarket components mean that we can meet the needs of both the vehicle manufacturer and the motorists.”

Kayaba claims to be the world’s largest producer of shock absorbers, with one in four of the world’s cars and light commercial vehicles fitted with Kayaba shock absorbers as original equipment.

Optima Seeks Battery Distributors

A UK network of specialist battery dealers is being set up to handle the new range of Optima high-tech automotive batteries manufactured by Johnson Controls.
The Optima range of YellowTop dual power batteries is aimed at car customisers and ICE fans. Optima says that it combines the proven abilities of a starter battery with all the advantages of a deep cycle battery for optimum charge and recharge. The capacity to maintain higher voltage during the discharge cycle means that motorists can power all the electronics and play car audio systems louder and longer.

AA Tops 2005 Roadside Assistance Index

The AA has been ranked as the top roadside rescue and recovery service in the annual JD Power 2005 Roadside Assistance Study. The survey records the opinions of over 23,000 motorists to create an index of customer satisfaction based on three main components – timing, performance of the patrol, and performance of the call handler.

Shell Joins Shanghai Automotive in Chinese Maintenance JV

(Akron/Tire Review) The Royal Dutch/Shell Group said it has teamed up with Shanghai Automotive Group Co to launch a car maintenance service for motorists in China. The 50-50 joint venture, called Anji Jiffy Lube Automotive Services Co Ltd, will build a network of fast lube service outlets modeled on the Jiffy Lube chain in the US.

It will invest around $23 million for the project, which will initially involve 10 pilot outlets in Shanghai within the first year of operation. Anji Jiffy is targeting to open more than 600 branches by 2015 in China, which currently has around 23 million vehicles on the road. In terms of new car sales each year, China is now the third largest in the world, after the US and Japan.

MOT Industry Calls for Reduced MOT Test Fees

The MOT Trade Forum is urging the Minister of Transport, David Jamieson, to amend the MOT Test fee structure and introduce a reduced but mandatory fee and a new scale of re-test charges.

The Forum’s membership represents the interests of the country’s 19,500 MOT testing stations and has proposed a complete overhaul of the MOT Test fee structure that would both reward motorists who keep their vehicles in good condition and encourage those running badly maintained and potentially dangerous vehicles to improve their maintenance standards.

RMA National Tire Safety Week

In the US, the RMA is preparing for its fifth annual consumer education programme promoting tyre care. The National Tire Safety Week runs from 24 to 30 April and will respond to research which found that 85 per cent of motorists fail to check tyre pressures properly.

Dunlop’s ‘Black-Clad Hit Squad’

Dunlop is calling on UK drivers to look out for a mysterious calling card, placed on their windscreens by what the company calls its “black-clad hit squad.” The promotion will see the “hit squad” leave their calling cards on vehicles in town centres across the UK.
