Improved with Age? Goodyear Wants You….

Recent research suggests that the number of drivers 80 years of age is set to double in the next decade. Therefore one tyre manufacturer is seeking mature motorists to prove that performance really can improve with age. To coincide with the launch of the OptiGrip, a tyre designed to deliver exceptional performance throughout its lifetime, Goodyear has teamed up with the Institute of Advanced Motorists to appeal for drivers with the same ability.

Goodyear aims to dispel the myths commonly associated with older road users, says spokesperson Anna Stanley. “Mature motorists are often criticised for their driving. However, it is often these drivers with many years of experience under their belts that are able to react well and keep their cool in difficult situations.

Ukrainians Advised – Stint on Tyres to Save Economy

Despite the country’s tendency towards cold weather, motorists in the Ukraine have been advised by a Russian politician that one way of averting financial catastrophe is to not replace worn winter tyres. Irina Khakamada, quoted by the Unian news agency, gave this advice when talking about measures citizens can take to the country’s current economic crisis, measures that also include not buying currency or transferring money into cash.

Bridgestone Unveils Plans for European Road Safety Day

October 13 is European Road Safety Day. To play its part in this event, taking place for the second year, Bridgestone has planned extensive programme promoting the importance of good tyre care in road safety. Activities, it says, will include thousands of free safety checks for motorists across Europe backed by local safety education initiatives in individual countries. The free safety check-ups will be conducted by the company’s First Stop tyre dealer network, with more than 1,700 of its outlets across Europe participating. Work will be carried out within First Stop premises, in store car parks and in various public places over a three-week period.

New Website for Those Who Can “Please the Ladies”

Sadly, some garages are still patronising in their treatment of the ‘fairer sex’, and greeting female customers with a leer before steering them towards an expensive and unnecessary purchase is not always just an occurrence from back in the bad old days. Businesses where this sort of behaviour is considered acceptable, however, won’t be recommended by one particular new website. The site, foxychoice.com, has been launched with the aim of helping motorists do their garage buying homework for MOT’s and car servicing, and in particular identifying the best female friendly garages and dealerships in the area. Car Ownership Becoming a Love/Hate Relationship

With more vehicles per capita than our European counterparts, some people have romantically described the UK as a nation of car lovers. However, according to a survey carried out by GfK NOP in conjunction with Nationwide Autocentre, it appears that Britain’s love affair with cars is dwindling, with nearly 30 per cent of men and 20 per cent of women now actually resenting their vehicles.

Rising fuel costs and road tax (74 and 53% respectively) were cited as the main reason for the ill feeling. However, those in the tyre industry will be interested to hear learn that 39 per cent of motorists resent their car due to its environmental impact more than even the congestion charge. In addition to the growing trend towards smaller new car sizes, it seems that economical tyres are also likely to grow in popularity – 50 per cent of the country is spending money on essentials like food and clothing instead of maintaining their vehicles.

Corvette ZR1 Arriving in UK with Pilot Sport 2

When the Corvette ZR1 arrives in the UK market in October, the US performance car will offer motorists on this side of the pond a hand-built supercharged 6.2 litre V8 motor, a top speed of more than 200mpg, a 0 to 60 time of just 3.4 seconds – and Michelin tyres. The ZR1 comes fitted with Pilot Sport 2 tyres in size P285/30ZR19 for the front and P335/25ZR20 on the rear. The Michelin rubber will be wrapped around 20-spoke wheels featuring a standard sterling silver finish or optional chrome version.

Marangoni Extends Its British Profile

Italian manufacturer Marangoni has ramped up its efforts in increasing its profile in recent weeks. After the highly successful Summer show and event programme – which endeavoured to bring the brand to the forefront of the performance and tuning market – the British International Motorshow provided an opportunity to take the firm’s self-styled ‘Marangoni Brand Experience’ to the record crowds that gathered at Excel in London. The company believes that its name carries the promise of European heritage, all-round performance and value, hoping that this triumvirate of riches resonates strongly with drivers of both performance and everyday cars.

Headlining the Marangoni presence at the British International Motorshow, and very much the draw on the Santa Pod Raceway stand, was the mighty Progetto Marangoni Toyota Yaris; an attraction that has been popular with British crowds all year. With the car on public display for a full week and contrasting with other show exhibits, the company was delighted with the response of motorists. Marangoni report a “huge number of requests for information on the Marangoni product, with visitors clamoring for information and the right Marangoni tyre choice for their cars.” The palpable hit scored by the Yaris helped to further establish Marangoni as a widely-recognised tyre brand amongst the show’s knowledgeable and discerning audience.

Viking International Promotes Tyre Safety Month

Viking International has confirmed its support of the annual Tyre Safety Campaign. Launched by TyreSafe last October, the month long consumer campaign will highlight the benefits of correctly inflated tyres to motorists and also raise awareness on how and when to check tyre pressure.

To support the campaign, Viking International is urging its customers involved in tyre services to offer consumers free tyre pressure checks throughout the month of October. Customers who would like to get involved can access a number of promotional materials available to download from the TyreSafe website, including free posters, leaflets and a press advert template to help support the campaign.

Hankook Gives Away Another TV

Neil Smith’s vigilance in taking care of his car has paid dividends after the Southampton man won 40-inch TV courtesy of Hankook. A trip to Southampton Tyre and Auto Centre, and subsequent prize, couldn’t have been better timed for Neil and his wife Brenda who have been considering an upgrade for some time. Nick Ripley from Southampton Tyre and Auto Centre in Burgess Road said he was delighted to hand over the final prize in the summer promotion: “The Hankook promotion has been a great way to encourage more motorists to have their tyres checked and it was great to have one of the three summer winners.”

Save £32 Million on MOTs at Kwik-Fit

Kwik-Fit has calculated that the 2.4 million British motorists due to MOT their car during the peak MOT month of September could save a combined £32 million by heading for their local Kwik-Fit centre. That’s enough cash, the company adds, to fill up over half a million cars with a tank full of unleaded petrol – even at today’s prices. Indeed, despite a recent increase in the RRP of an MOT by 5 per cent, Kwik-Fit says it is pledging to hold its pre-increase offer of £39.95 – representing a saving of £13.15 – 25 per cent below the new RRP of £53.10.

Hankook Puts Harris in the Picture

Hankook has given away another 40-inch TV as part of its summer promotion offering motorists a free tyre check at dealerships in the south. Prize-winner Mark Harris commented: “I’m just delighted to have been picked as a winner,” said Mark who collected his prize from Tyreland in Southampton just in time for the Olympics. “I had my tyres checked and had forgotten about the competition but it’s a great prize.”

Study Reveals Tyre Safety – and In-Car Toilets – Important to Motorists

The people at Protyre were curious to know what motorists really want from their car. After all, many a man – and more than a few women – salivate after the type of hi-tech gadgetry tucked away in the latest James Bond car or those driven by the rich and famous. So Protyre conducted a survey and found that, yes, for a large number of us, the options list regulars such as air conditioning and satnav just don’t fire the imagination at new car purchasing time.

RAC Condemns “Hypermiling”

While fuel-saving measures such as keeping your tyres at the correct pressure and driving intelligently are both praiseworthy and sensible, there are fears that some drivers are going too far in their efforts to improve mileage.

Such motorists are known as “hypermilers” and will try almost anything in their efforts to improve economy. Tactics include tailgating and over-inflating tyres (sometimes by as much as 10 – 15 psi) and coasting in neutral with the engine off. The RAC urges motorists not to copy hypermilers, pointing out that many of the techniques and practices used are unsafe, if not actually illegal. The organisation makes the point that there is a huge difference between being a cost-conscious motorist and a hypermiler.
