Kwik-Fit Unveils Wall of Shame

It’s not as glamorous as the Pirelli Calendar – which this year features an African backdrop and a bevy of elephants to complement the traditional array of stunning models – but the Kwik-Fit Tyre Wall of Shame is arguably just as compelling, and the company says it is the perfect gift in helping keep loved ones safe on the roads next year.

Kwik-Fit’s Tyre Wall of Shame 2009 calendar features a dozen shocking images of the most dangerous tyres customers brought into Kwik-Fit centres during 2008. The truly frightening part is that, whilst each tyre represents the worst example seen in that particular month, the monthly specimen represents just the tip of the iceberg. Kwik-Fit says it saw enough tyres like these in 2008 to fill at least 50 calendars.

Michelin Offers US Splash-Reducing XZA3

The newest Michelin XZA3 features the Michelin’s Antisplash deflectors on both sidewalls. First offered in 2006, Michelin’s Antisplash feature lowers the trajectory of water spray off of the tyres, reducing the amount of water hitting the windshields of nearby cars or other trucks.

“Customers have come to love the XZA3 tire for its performance on the highway,” said Marc Laferriere, vice president of marketing for Michelin Americas Truck Tires. “Now, with Antisplash technology, we have significantly increased visibility for both truckers and those motorists driving by trucks in wet conditions, especially during a rainstorm.” The new XZA3 Antisplash, available in size 275/80R22.5 LRH, carries Michelin’s seven year, 70,000-mile, three-retread warranty. Motorists Facing ‘Trade or Upgrade’ Dilemma, Says Kwik-Fit

We’re all familiar with the ‘move or improve’ dilemma – where homeowners weigh up the cost benefits of moving home versus making home improvements. But new research from Kwik-Fit shows that, with money tight and new car sales down, more motorists are facing a similar conundrum in deciding whether to ‘trade or upgrade’ their car. The company’s research found that some 6.4 million motorists aim to make a number of upgrades to their existing vehicle over the next 12 months, in order to make it look and feel more like new.

Pirelli Offers Welsh Drivers Tyre Pressure Checks

The World Rally Championship arrives in Wales in early December (4-6) for its final stage of the season. To coincide with the event, Pirelli’s depots in South Wales are offering motorists in the region free tyre pressure checks between 1 and 13 December. The Italian manufacturer supplies the control tyres for the series, whose final leg takes place in the Cardiff area.

Tyresure Encourages Winter Tyre Pressure Check

Tyresure is encouraging drivers to check their tyre pressures as the temperatures plummet. With winter drawing in and early mornings seeing temperatures nudging zero and below, many motorists aren’t checking their tyres and adjusting for the cooler temperatures. Air contracts when it is cooled, meaning that first thing in the morning your car tyre pressures could be several pounds lower than they were during the summer months – with an obvious effect on your car’s handling and road manners.

TyreSafe: Cold Weather Tyres Offer Safer Alternative

With Winter upon us TyreSafe is advising motorists to consider fitting cold weather tyres in order to improve road safety. Slippery roads accounted for 55 per cent of road traffic accidents in which road environment was a contributory factor in 2007, according to Department for Transport (DfT) figures. In November 2007, the DfT recorded a spike in personal injury accidents as drivers were caught out by the drop in temperature and increased rainfall, with 16,559 accidents recorded, nearly 700 more accidents than at any other time in the year.

Uninsured and Unlicensed

Stop slouching and listen up, lad. I’ve got something to say to you….Not only do you have a bad attitude, a stupid haircut and dismal taste in music…you’re also most likely to be uninsured and unlicensed! This is how a certain relative of mine – let’s call him Uncle Bruce – would inform our nation’s younger drivers of the findings in a recent report from road safety organisation IAM. The IAM itself, of course, tackles this important issue in a much more constructive and tactful manner.

According to the report, published in the latest edition of the organisation’s Advanced Driving magazine, potentially lethal unlicensed drivers tend to be younger and male, and drive up to an accumulated 3.7 million hours a month. Neil Greig, IAM Motoring Trust director, said that a new ten-point plan is needed to prepare young people to drive safely on their own or with passengers after their test.

ATS Euromaster Wins Lloyd’s TSB Autolease ‘Conquest’ Deal

ATS Euromaster has gained the Lloyds TSB Autolease tyre supplier contract, the UK’s second largest hire fleet in the car and van sector. The new three year agreement sees Lloyds TSB Autolease adopt a completely new tyre policy with Michelin tyres being fitted as replacements across its fleet. These will be fitted predominantly through ATS Euromaster’s nationwide network of 470 service centres and fleet of mobile service vehicles, which can be booked to fit tyres at a customer’s home or place of work.

Steve Phillips, Deputy Operations Director at Lloyds TSB Autolease, says: “What came out very clearly through the tendering process was ATS Euromaster and Michelin’s willingness to work in partnership with us to deliver a quality service that really adds value to our customers.

Rogue Drivers Forced Off The Roads

The number of rogue drivers on Britain’s roads has dropped significantly, the results of a joint police and Government operation, released by the Department for Transport, indicate. Compared with a similar operation in 2006, fewer motorists were found to be driving without a valid licence, insurance or MOT. Operation V79, carried out by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and its Scottish counterpart ACPOS in partnership with the Department for Transport, showed that:

* The level of unlicensed drivers stopped fell by half over two years – to 0.8 per cent from 1.6 per cent in 2006
* The level of uninsured drivers stopped fell to 1.2 per cent from 1.9 per cent in 2006
* The level of vehicles stopped which required but were without a current MOT fell to 1.5 per cent from 4.2 per cent in 2006
* The level of drivers stopped without valid vehicle tax fell to 1 per cent from 2 per cent in 2006
* The level of drivers committing a serious offence, such as no insurance, or driving whilst disqualified, fell to 3.4 per cent from 7.5 per cent in 2006 while the number committing any of the offences looked for – which included failing to notify change of vehicle ownership, illegal vehicle number plates – fell to 11.1 per cent from 21 per cent in 2006.

Don’t be a DIPSTIC!

In hot pursuit…..of careless vehicle maintenance. According to Kwik-Fit, millions of UK motorists are at risk of being a DIPSTIC. Mind you, when the fast fit giant says this it isn’t doling out the harmless insult made popular by Hazzard County sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane – it means each of these road users is potentially a Driver In Poor State To Inspect Cars. Strong words indeed, but Kwik-Fit has survey results to back its claim.

The Dirty Secrets of the British Motorist

British motorists spend on average 27 days a year behind the wheel – this equates to car owners in the UK collectively spending over 700 million days a year sitting in their cars. In stark contrast to this, researchers found that the average Brit only cleans their car once every 94 days and for a grand total of one hour and 41 minutes per year. This means for every six and a half hours motorists spend driving they only spend one minute cleaning.

The research, conducted by Black & Decker in a bid to study people’s relationships with their cars, found that although the car is the scene for many day to day activities, including eating and working, only 12 per cent of the 1,089 car owners polled were concerned by the levels of dirt, grime and bacteria that build up through daily use.

Canadian Winter Tyre Thefts – the Work of Organised Crime?

The new law in Quebec, Canada making winter tyres mandatory on provincial roads may be the factor behind rising thefts of these products. Canadian broadcaster CTV reports that on the morning October 30, following the region’s first major snow of the season, a number of Montreal motorists awoke to find the winter tyres stolen from their vehicles.
