RMA survey throws spotlight on inflation ignorance

This week is National Tire Safety Week in the US, and the Rubber Manufacturers Association has used the occasion to highlight low levels of tyre inflation proficiency amongst American motorists. Using figures gained from a survey conducted as part of the RMA-sponsored safety week, the trade association states that only 15 per cent of US motorists know how to correctly check tyre pressure. This is serious business as, the RMA notes, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports under-inflated tyres contribute to more than 600 highway fatalities and 33,000 injuries each year. Furthermore, under-inflated tyres cause US drivers to waste almost five billion litres of fuel each year.

HiQ surveys motoring frustrations, dawdling drivers voted biggest pain in the bumper

Motorists who dawdle at traffic lights annoy more people than bullying bus drivers, middle-lane motorway hoggers and caravans, a HiQ survey of 500 motorists has suggested. The fast fit network asked drivers what most frustrates them about life on Britain’s roads. Somewhat surprisingly, twee car stickers – including the slogans “sprinkled by fairy dust” and “cheeky monkey on board” – came third in HiQ’s Driver Frustration survey.

TyreSafe pledges support for UN road safety campaign

TyreSafe has pledged its support for the UN’s “decade of Action for Road Safety” initiative, designed to combat the 1.3 million deaths occurring on roads around the world each year. The global campaign is calling upon governments and other organisations to take action and TyreSafe says it will support the campaign by educating UK road users about the importance of correct and regular tyre maintenance.

Bond International aiming to sell 80,000 tyres a month by 2012

Bond International, the exclusive UK distributor of Infinity Tyres, aims to increase its monthly sales from the current level of 50-60,000 to 80,000 by 2012. To achieve this, the company must persevere in what it calls its “biggest challenge” for this year, namely to introduce the Infinity brand to its two to three thousand customers throughout the UK. Reaching this goal in turn requires employing the correct marketing strategy.

New warehouse to keep Delticom ‘agile’

In reporting its performance during the first quarter of 2011, Delticom AG notes that the past year demonstrated the importance of having ample stocks on hand to ensure the company can “remain agile” in peak periods. To meet this end, the company is scheduled to open new warehouse within the next couple of weeks. This warehouse is Delticom’s largest to date and the online retailer says it will “enjoy major investments into information, conveyor and packaging technology.”

etyres has launched a puncture repair gauge that helps motorists whose tyres have been damaged to dodge the cost of expensive replacements. The gauge is available to download and print from the etyres website.

With Britain's roads blighted by a pothole plague following two consecutive harsh winters, motorists are increasingly suffering from punctured tyres.

HiQ launches in-branch promotional magazine

HiQ has announced the replacement of its two year-old newsletter with a glossy magazine designed to enhance the retail experience of its customers throughout the network’s 160 centres. HiQ’s marketing manager Geraldine McGovern said that the magazine – called ‘Hi’ – will be more contemporary and customer-focused. The publication will have “a more premium look and feel, featuring more customer friendly news, while detailing the latest offers and promotions across the network,” according to a HiQ statement.

Michelin top in J.D. Power US satisfaction survey

The latest J.D. Power and Associates survey in the United States has revealed a growing level of tyre satisfaction amongst owners of domestic and European vehicles. According to the J.D. Power and Associates 2011 U.S. Original Equipment Tire Customer Satisfaction Study, released on April 11, levels of tyre satisfaction amongst owners of US-produced vehicles increased to 682 on a 1,000-point scale, up from 659 in 2009. Similarly, tyre satisfaction among owners of European vehicles has increased to 698 in 2011 from 689 in 2009. Tyre satisfaction for owners of Asian vehicles, however, has remained flat, declining just one point between 2009 and 2011 to its current level of 637. Tyre satisfaction amongst owners of Asian nameplate vehicles, J.D. Power notes, is well below average in all segments except for the luxury segment.

TyreSafe updates caravan axle load and tyre inflation info

The caravanning season is almost upon us and TyreSafe has updated its caravan tyre safety leaflet, revising the axle load and tyre inflation pressure tables. This update has been issued following technical discussions between the tyre industry and caravan manufacturers relating to the industry’s ongoing recommendation that the maximum vehicle load should not exceed 90 per cent of the combined tyre load capacity, as indicated by load index.

Goodyear survey highlights poor knowledge of Highway Code

Results from the poll of 5,000 motorists showed a large percentage failed to correctly answer a number of general knowledge and picture questions covering The Highway Code. 48 per cent of those surveyed also didn’t know that the typical stopping distance for a car driving at 50mph is 53 metres or 13 car lengths. Nearly a fifth thought they could get away with 36 metres.

Quentin Wilson: ‘Global driving skills crisis, particularly in the UK’

Goodyear’s apparent ‘safety ambassador’ at the firm's Blimp re-introduction to UK airspace was Quentin Wilson, who voiced support for the company’s efforts to raise road safety awareness in this area.

“Say ‘road safety’ and people reach for the valium,” Wilson said during a press conference at the launch, explaining that motorists have had enough of speed-camera-politics and apparently disingenuous claims that these have delivered safer roads and not just higher revenues.

Bridgestone Ecopia OE on Nissan Leaf

Deliveries of the Nissan Leaf – the vehicle recently crowned European Car of the Year 2011 – have begun in Europe, and Bridgestone reports that models of this all-electric car sold here and in Japan will be supplied with its Ecopia tyres as original equipment. The tyre maker will supply its Ecopia EP150 in size 205/55R16 91V. This fitment is part of a larger Ecopia EP150 line-up Bridgestone announced in January; the range is now available to fit a wide range of compact and mid-sized passenger cars with 14 to 16-inch rim sizes in 55 to 65 series.

Mileage tackled in phase 3 of Michelin’s “right tyre” campaign

The third phase of Michelin’s current UK advertising campaign got underway on March 14, and this time round the focus is on longevity. Retaining the campaign’s strap line of “the right tyre changes everything,” the latest ads feature Bibendum – otherwise known as the Michelin Man – defeating a ‘wearing’ road by providing motorists with longer-lasting tyres. Once again, the campaign will include a mix of television commercials, print media ads, outdoor posters and online banners.

Halfords promises to tell it like it is

Halfords Autocentres has pledged to make customers' lives easier by championing the use of 'plain English' in its garages, following a poll of 2,000 motorists carried out for Halfords which revealed a high level of confusion around mechanical jargon and the need for simple and un-patronising language when dealing with motorists.

Over nine out of ten car owners (91 per cent) say they are left bewildered by terminology used by mechanics and almost half of motorists (48 per cent) admit paying for a service or repair without understanding what it was for.
