Having produced its first motorcycle tyres in 1911, British manufacturer Avon Tyres has had time aplenty to hone its range. The current Avon motorcycle tyre portfolio covers numerous bike applications, including road legal race and track day tyres, fitments for smaller capacity commuter bikes, classic, hypersport, adventure sport, custom, touring and cruiser motorcycle products. Avon has also introduced a line of inner tubes.
A fourth product enters the Dunlop hypersport tyre portfolio this year. This is the SportSmart TT, a tyre derived from Dunlop’s road-focused SportSmart Range. Adventure riders receive a ‘Max’ successor to the TrailSmart.
When we spoke with Cambrian Tyres just over a year ago, the specialist motorcycle distributor shared news of a new UK exclusive brand in its portfolio, Anlas. Cambrian began its association with the Turkish manufacturer with the Winter Grip 2, a scooter tyre intended for year-round use, and sales were good from the very start. Based on this early success, Cambrian Tyres has gradually built up its Anlas offer, and in 2018 this will continue growing to include more products for scooters, lightweight motorcycles and adventure bikes. At the same time, new additions will join Cambrian’s house brands as well as its exclusive Continental range.
The season opener of the WorldSBK Championship 2018 began in Australia today, and Pirelli is back for a 15th year as official tyre supplier for all classes. For the race weekend, riders will have a total of seven tyre options open to them (in addition to the super soft qualifier tyre that can only be used in the second session of Superpole), four front and three rear tyres, and in addition to the tyres evaluated on testing days, riders can select an additional front and rear option.
In the wake of last August’s launch at the 2017 International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) of a new enduro tyre range, Michelin has now extended its line-up with the addition of two new Bib Mousse inserts for enduro and motocross use. These two new solutions are available for purchase from stockists from February 2018.
Riders of older motorcycles as well as modern, smaller capacity bikes can add the Metzeler Roadtec 01 to their replacement tyre shortlists. The sport touring tyre range will be extended this year through the addition of fitments featuring a cross-ply construction rather than the radial casing used in all previously-released dimensions. By introducing cross-ply sizes, Metzeler hopes to broaden the sport touring tyre’s appeal.
The Dunlop TrailSmart has been replaced in key sizes by a successor tyre, the TrailSmart Max. In addition to building upon the previous-generation tyre’s wet and dry grip characteristics, Dunlop Europe says new technologies have been used to improve the TrailSmart Max’s handling and durability.
Avon Tyres has extended its Cobra motorcycle tyre range, introducing four new sizes to suit the latest Harley-Davidson Big Twin model updates. The two new front fitments, 130/60 B19 and 130/60 B21, are suitable for the Street Glide and CVO Breakout models, among others. On the rear, riders can now choose the Cobra in 160/70 B17 and 180/55 B18 sizes.
The Metzeler Karoo range is being extended with the introduction of the Karoo Street, a tyre developed for the latest generation of adventure, big enduro and dual-purpose motorcycles. The manufacturer sees its target rider group as those with bikes “capable of taking dirt roads in their stride,” and with the Karoo Street it anticipates that these motorcycles will “now be further enhanced” to “tackle distant road journeys, where good mileage, stability and comfort are fundamental throughout the lifecycle of the tyre.”
