UK motorcycle and two-wheeler registrations in 2024 rose to 116,399 units, reflecting a 2.5 per cent increase and narrowly surpassing 2023 total registrations. “The new motorcycle market ended 2024 somewhat positively, with December recording growth of 114.0 per cent, climbing from 5,236 units to 11,206 units. January 2022 experienced a 161.4 per cent increase (2353 units) for new PTWs in comparison to January 2021, a month that was once again plagued with partial lockdowns. “The latest power Two Wheelers (PTW) registration figures showed a positive outlook for 2022; as long as supply continues to increase, PTW retailers can expect a record year for new registrations driven by high demand” said Paddy O’Connell, Head of National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA), commenting on the latest MCIA new registration figures.

The latest Motorcycle Industry Association’s (MCIA) registration figures show the overall Power-Two-Wheeler (PTW) market was down 36.7 per cent in January. A total of 2,312 fewer units were sold compared to the same period last year. With much of the UK plunged into further Covid-related restrictions from January, the “weariness of the marketplace” may have contributed to the drop in motorcycle and scooter sales, respectively down -43 per cent and -22 per cent.
Sales figures for July, recently released by the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA) have given a welcome and much-needed boost to the morale – and bottom line – of motorcycle dealers. There were increases in sales of machines in every sector, leading to a 41.9 per cent rise across the market, compared with July last year, and Stephen Latham, Head of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA), which represents UK motorcycle retailers, is in no doubt that the pandemic is responsible for the upturn, at least in part.
Motorcycle showrooms had to stay closed in May although workshops could remain open to facilitate repair. As a result, it is remarkable that 5,394 new machines were put on the road in May, the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) says. This is about half the number of units registered a year ago when motorcycle dealerships were fully open, and customers were not asked to remain at home.
According to figures from the Motorcycle Industry Association, just 1,623 new motorcycles were registered in April, down from 9,820 in the previous April. Year-to-date, the market has declined by -31.1 per cent, from 36,951 in 2019 to 25,451 in 2020 so far.

Sales of motorcycles continued to rise in April, according to figures released by the Motor Cycle Industry Association. April sales were up 7.3 per cent against April 2018, and 9.4 per cent up in the year-to-date. In total, 36,951 bikes have been put on UK roads so far 2019, up by 3,188 registrations compared to 2018.
“2018 was a turbulent year for the motorcycle market, driven by political and economic uncertainty over Brexit. However, overall sale volumes were broadly in line with the previous year showing that consumers are still choosing to purchase new bikes,” said Stephen Latham, head of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) which represents motorcycle retailers across the UK.
