New Ducati 899 Panigale to run on Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa tyres

Pirelli has won the contract to supply original equipment tyres to the new Ducati 899 Panigale, launched at Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola. The Italian tyre supplier said that the launch of the younger sister of the 1199 Panigale represented a good opportunity for Pirelli to confirm its leadership in the top range segment, in addition to continuing the strong technological partnership with the Borgo Panigale-based manufacturer.

Dunlop launches SportSmart2

Motorcyclists are an ageing consumer group – according to some figures, more than 60 per cent of riders now over 40 years old, almost double the proportion of ten years ago. While motorcycle performance has improved with significant increases in horsepower and top speeds, many riders run older models, and according to a recent report from German publication Motorrad, the average two-wheeler age in now more than 14 years old, two years older than in 2007.

Mitas enters bike radial market with Sport Force

Mitas has entered the motorcycle radial business with the global launch of the Sport Force. The new tyre is manufactured in Slovenia by Savatech, the former Sava rubber manufacturing division acquired by Mitas’ parent company CGS Holdings in October 2012. Sport Force is a sport and touring range that is initially available in three front and five rear sizes.

Re-focusing on Cooper: T&A interviews Jeff Schumaker

At the start of 2013, Jeff Schumaker took over as managing director of Cooper Tire Europe moving to the company’s Melksham headquarters in order to take up the role. But Schumaker’s appointment wasn’t a UK debut, but rather a return to the country and to familiar faces. Schumaker’s first stint in the UK took place roughly a decade ago in 2002/2003 when he was mentored by then MD Ron Shield and worked alongside his immediate predecessor in Melksham, Julian Baldwin, who was then marketing and motorsports director. Roughly four months after Schumaker took up the reigns at Cooper Tire Europe, Tyres & Accessories visited the company’s Melksham headquarters to see what direction the company is taking following the most recent change of leadership.

Bridgestone introduces Racing Battlax V01 motorcycle slick tyre

Bridgestone has introduced the Racing Battlax V01 racing slick, a motorcycle tyre designed for novices and medium class riders for use on race circuits. The manufacturer says the new tyre has its technological roots in Bridgestone’s latest MotoGP compounds and contact area engineering, giving riders increased handling, cornering, and warm-up performance.

Bridgestone launches latest Exedra touring tyre

Bridgestone Europe has introduced the Exedra Max touring tyre for heavyweight, long distance touring bikes. Available in radial and cross-ply structures with 21 sizes for the front and 20 sizes for the rear, Exedra Max will progressively replace the current Exedra touring line-up in Europe.

Avon Storm 3D X-M offers 15-20% higher mileage than predecessor

Following the introduction of the 3D Ultra last year, Avon is further expanding its motorcycle tyre range with the release of the Storm 3D X-M. In a short release introducing the new product, the tyre maker says the new X-M delivers 15 to 20 per cent greater mileage in comparison with the current Storm range. The sipes on the X-M also contain three-dimensional points that are designed to improve stability, grip, limit tread flex and allow the tyre to warm-up in less time – a feature also seen on the 3D Ultra. High performance single and multi compound super rich silica (SRS) treads are also present; Avon says these enhance wet grip. The tyre maker adds that the X-M possesses outstanding handling and stability qualities.

Avon 3D Ultra now covered by warranty scheme

Avon Tyres has added several versions of the 3D Ultra motorcycle tyre range to its Road Hazard Warranty. This means that, in certain instances, should a 3D Ultra tyre become unserviceable as a result of what Avon considers “qualified tyre damage”, such as through a puncture, a replacement will be offered at no charge.

Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP fitted to MV Agusta F4 range

MV Agusta has chosen to fit Pirelli’s Diablo Supercorsa SP tyres as original equipment on the basic, R and RR versions of its 2013 F4 range. The tyre is manufactured as a race replica version of the SC (Special Compound) mix version used in the World Supersport, Superstock 1000 FIM Cup and UEM European Championship in 2013. The racing street tyres in sizes 120/70 ZR17 on the front and 200/55 ZR17 on the rear are the latest fitment deal in a series of inter-Italian partnerships between the motorcycle brand and the tyre supplier.

Conti opens Automated Indoor Braking Analyzer

Continental has opened the first fully-automated tyre testing facility in the world at Contidrom, near Hanover. In addition to the ability to perform braking tests without drivers, helping to test consistently for longer hours, Conti has built a 300x30m air conditioned hall to house the Automated Indoor Braking Analyzer (AIBA), reducing the influence of atmospheric conditions on test results. The manufacturer will also be able to control the friction coefficient, as the hall enables the company to switch the 75m surfaces used as a braking area, in addition to using a low temperature hall for testing on ice. The main hall is also fitted with a sprinkler system for wet testing. Conti estimates that the AIBA will perform around 100,000 braking procedures, on passenger car, van, and 4×4 summer and winter tyres, when fully operational.

Mitas recalls 1,752 motorbike tyres

Mitas is recalling 1,752 tubeless E-07 motorcycle tyres. The tyres were mainly sold to customers in Europe. The sizes subject to recall are: 110/80-19 M/C 59T E-07 TL MI, 100/90-19 M/C 57T E-07 TL MI and 110/80-19 M/C 59T E-07 DAKAR TL MI. According to the company, the problem that has sparked the recall is that under extreme conditions the affected tyres can “suddenly loose air pressure.”
