Bridgestone UK Names New Motorcycle Division Manager

Bridgestone UK has strengthened its sales team with the appointment of Andrew Whitehead as manager for its motorcycle division. According to an official company statement, Whitehead’s primary role will be to “secure Bridgestone’s market share of quality motorbike tyres.” This portfolio includes the new Battlax BT-021, a long-term replacement for the successful BT-020, the market-leading sport touring tyre.

“It’s an exciting time to join the motorcycle division following the official launch of the BT-021,” said Whitehead. “It’s a fantastic product, and the positive feedback we’ve received about the handling and performance capabilities of the tyre leads us to believe it will make a real impact in the market. The BT-020 is an incredibly tough act to follow, but my focus is to ensure the BT-021, and the rest of the Bridgestone motorbike range, can generate equally impressive unit sales.

Andrew Whitehead, 44, formerly worked in a sales capacity for Bridgestone’s truck division following a six year stint at Dunlop, where he was also responsible for truck and motorcycle tyre sales.

New Captain Steers Steady Ship

As Cooper Tire’s motorsports season ramps up, Tyres & Accessories met with Cooper Tire & Rubber Europe managing director, Julian Baldwin. Since taking over the role as part of a normal pre-prepared succession plan following Ron Shield’s retirement last August, Julian Baldwin has settled into the role and is geared up to the European and global challenges that now face him. As part of this month’s Manufacturing Focus, Tyres & Accessories interviewed Baldwin but with a particular eye on developments in the manufacturing side of the business.

The sleepy Wiltshire town of Melksham might not be the first place you think of when you consider tyre manufacturing operations but Cooper’s UK and European production base plays a very important part in the wider organisation. Of the six distribution centres and five sales offices Cooper runs in Europe Melksham represents the region’s only manufacturing centre and basically half of what Cooper refers to as International Tire Operations. Cooper Tire & Rubber Europe run subsidiaries in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland for marketing its products in continental Europe. (The other “half of the segment is the two administrative offices, two production facilities, and a sales office in China).

Aiming for Number 1

In order to achieve his goal of taking Michelin to the number one spot in the UK two-wheel market by 2010, Michelin Tyre Plc’s head of Two-wheel Olivier Gros, has plans to overhaul the marketing and distribution of its premium level products. Perhaps the most eye catching announcement is the news that Michelin will release a new dual compound tyre, following the success of the Power Race and Pilot Power 2CT. T&A has seen a preview of the new sport touring tyre, which was exhibited at the Motorbike Trade Expo earlier in January. Details are sketchy at the moment, but external independent testing appears to suggest that the new dual compound tyre will last 10 per cent longer than any of its competitors. But how does the new product compare to the fuel saving and tread life characteristics of the company’s car and truck ranges?

Sava Picks BTS as UK ATV Distributor

Bike Tyrestore has announced that Sava’s range of ATV tyres will be available in the New Year and that it is now the manufacturer’s sole UK trade distributor. Bike Tyrestore joint managing director, Peter Smith, told Tyres & Accessories the company would like to make contact with ATV tyre specialists, with a view to setting up area distributorships for this product range.

“This may be of particular interest to farm tyre specialists and anyone else for whom ATV tyres are a major part of their business,” he explained adding: “We’ll be showing this new range at Expo in January (14 to 16 January, Stoneleigh-Park Exhibition Centre).” Quad magazine is expected to publish the first UK test soon. Kenda – ‘Essen is About the World’

When it came to expanding into Europe the UK market was the first stop on Kenda’s list. Now expansion is reportedly going well as the company spreads out into the rest of Europe. “We want to be careful to be successful from the very beginning,” said Kenda Rubber Industrial Co Ltd president, talking to Tyres & Accessories. And the German Reifen exhibition is a good place to do it – “The Essen show is about the world and not simply Germany,” Hongder Chang adds. Having just launched its new Kaiser high performance tyre, Kenda also introduced a new all-season and snow tyres for sale in “the northern territories.”

Pirelli Reaffirms Positive Guidance

Pirelli & C SpA has reaffirmed its guidance for “significant improvement” in full-year results compared with 2004. The news follows strong nine-month results, which saw net profits rise 34 per cent. Revenue in the first nine months of 2005 was 2,707 million euros, an increase of 9.8 per cent compared with 2,466 million euros on 30 September 2004. EBITDA was 412 million euros (15.2 per cent of sales), an increase of 17.7 per cent from 350 million euros in the first nine months of last year.

The Cost Of Illegal Tyre Storage

Illegally storing 10,000 tyres cost a Halifax man more than £2,000, according to the Environment Agency. Halifax Magistrate’s Court fined Simon John McCormack a total of £500 and ordered him to pay compensation of £1,034 to SHD Holdings. A contribution of £500 to the costs of the Environment Agency, which brought the case, was also imposed.

Wholesaler Invests In the Future

Traditionally Dutch wholesalers can be among the most important business contacts tyre dealers can have. Their reliable feel for trade business is almost expected in Europe, and company news is often news of expansion. This also applies to Tyre Trading International BV (TTI). The Dutch wholesaler based in Numansdorp (south of Rotterdam) is currently building a new on-site warehouse, which will eventually increase TTI’s capacity from 40,000 to 70,000 units. Talking to Tyres & Accessories, owner Peter van’t Hof and his son Dr Peter-Alexander van’t Hof explained the reasons for this expensive step.

Focus On Motorbike Tyres

The German market for motorcycle tyres is on the move. Bridgestone has tried several times to capture the number one position traditionally held by Metzeler. Whether the Japanese manufacturer attained this target last year will be just one question we will answer in the next issue of NEUE REIFENZEITUNG. Additionally, we will be looking at this season’s new products in this sector, and examine the market performance in this specialised segment.

Hanover Motorbike Tyres: Continental Very Ambitious

Continental AG is going to increase its involvement in motorbike tyres and the OE-market. So far, the Hanover group has concentrated mainly on passenger car, truck and industrial tyres. All this is now subject to change. The fact that, after belonging to the commercial tyre business unit, two-wheeler tyres were merged with the group’s passenger vehicle tyre unit from January, 1st this year, could be an indication for the company’s reborn interest in the motorbike tyre market. As stated by Continental, the group achieved a 50 percent increase in turnover of motorbike tyres last season, and according to their motorbike tyre marketing leader Jörg Essiger, entering the radial ply tyre segment with the “ContiForce” would be another step in the right direction. The new two-wheeler tyre had already been presented to public at the Intermot fair in Munich last autumn, and was officially presented to the press at the Contidrom fair in May. Essiger explains, “the ContiForce offers both excellent handling and a very reasonable price, which is 10-15 percent lower than the competition.” He says, that ContiForce would be the appropriate tyre for sports-bike riders, and real sportsmen can also demonstrate their efficiency on it. Who knows, whether with their next new motorbike tyre the Hanover group might enter into the pure sport machine segment. Already next year, the tyre manufacturer will probably put another newly-developed motorbike tyre on the market; so said Jörg Essiger at the Contidrom presentation – however no further details were forthcoming.

“Intermot” Munich – Many New Motorbike Tyres

Munich’s “Intermot” has become the main fair for motorbikes, the supplying industry and for dealers involved in motorbike tyres. Although the German market for motorcycles declined by 7 % (Europe: + 7 %) in the first half of this year, once again, “more than 150,000” visitors from 84 countries (1998: 150,368 from 80 countries) came to visit the New Munich Trade Fair Centre from 13 to 17 September to find out about the products and services of 1,033 exhibitors and 56 additionally represented companies from 35 countries (1998: 836 exhibitors from 33 countries). As in the premiere event in 1998, the proportion of trade visitors was approximately 35 %, with more than a fifth of their number coming from abroad. The largest contingents of trade visitors from abroad came from within the European Union (67 %) and the rest of Europe. Visitors’ interest encompassed all areas of the fair, with the top favourites being motorised vehicles (72 %), parts and accessories for motorised two-wheelers (47 %) and clothing and rider equipment. Therefore many companies from the tyre business were among the exhibitors in Munich: Cooper-Avon, Continental, Dunlop, Metzeler/Pirelli and Michelin showed their latest products and the tyre trade was present too. And there were a lot of new tyres to discover. For example a winter tyre for scooters, or Continental’s move into the radial segment, seven new tyres from Michelin and many more premieres for the upcoming motorbike season 2001.
