Yokohama to exhibit at Moscow motor show

Russia’s finally gained admission to the World Trade Organisation, making this massive market even more attractive to international companies. Tyre makers have shown interest in Russia for some time, and Yokohama Rubber claims it holds the top share there amongst the foreign-owned tyre manufacturers. In December 2011 it became the first Japanese tyre manufacturer to open a plant in Russia and the company reports its sales network is growing. To support its activities, the tyre maker has announced its participation in the Moscow International Automobile Salon 2012, which runs from 29 August to 9 September.

Kumho to sponsor US motor show

Kumho Tire USA has signed on as this year’s premier tyre sponsor for the California-based Inland Empire Auto Show, which takes place on 24 to 26 August. Explaining its decision to serve as show sponsor, the tyre maker’s US operation says that “with a recent upswing in the economy, Kumho Tire management stated it felt the need to begin placing the company in a greater light in front of its core consumers, the auto enthusiasts.”

Volkswagen up!, Skoda Citigo fit Bridgestone tyres as OE

Volkswagen has selected the Bridgestone Ecopia EP25 tyre as original equipment for the manufacturer’s new up! city car. The A-segment car was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2011, and Bridgestone started delivery of 165/70R14 81T and 175/65R14 82T size Ecopia EP25 tyres in November 2011. The blue motion version of the up! will be fitted with 175/65R14 82T.

Broad Continental range on show at Reifen

No particular surprises awaited Tyres & Accessories at Continental’s Reifen 2012 stand. The German tyre maker presented its full consumer tyre range, including several key new products also seen at the Geneva Motor Show in February – the recently launched ContiPremiumContact 5, the ContiWinterContact TS850 and the Conti.e.Contact Winter.

Bridgestone OE on Ferrari FF

The Ferrari FF was officially unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year and is now on sale for £227,077, plus optional extras. The Italian manufacturer’s latest offering is available in various rim and tyre sizes, and Bridgestone reports its Potenza S001 has been chosen as one of the original equipment fitments for the four-seat, four wheel drive Ferrari.

Bridgestone OE for Peugeot 208

On the back of offering what it calls a “very competitive technical package,” Bridgestone has secured primary original equipment fitment for the recently launched Peugeot 208. The tyre maker will supply its EP25 in size 185/65R15 88T as the predominant tyre on Peugeot 208 models with 15-inch rims and Potenza RE050A in size 205/45R17 88V as the sole 17-inch fitment.

Road legal track tyre a first for Conti

Continental has introduced a road legal track day tyre into the UK, and the company says this latest product sets a new benchmark for high performance cars. The tyre is the ContiForceContact, which visitors to February’s Geneva Motor Show may have seen fitted to the Conti-liveried Artega GT sports car that competed in last year’s Nürburgring 24-hour race. The ContiForceContact is the German manufacturer’s first road legal track day tyre.

Geneva launch for ContiPremiumContact 5

Along with two cold weather products, the ContiWinterContact TS 850 and Conti.eContact Winter, at the Geneva motor show Continental displayed a brand new summer tyre, the ContiPremiumContact 5. Due to be launched this spring, the new high-volume range will be manufactured in 26 sizes for 14 to 17-inch rims – making it suitable for vehicles ranging from small to luxury cars – and is approved for speeds of up to 270 km/h.

Conti to introduce winter EV tyre

Starting in autumn 2013, Continental will produce a winter tyre for electric cars. The company previewed this tyre, the Conti.eContact Winter, at the Geneva Motor Show and shared that it can cut rolling resistance considerably compared with its standard equivalent. “The 20-inch size was decided upon due to rolling resistance and wear criteria,” commented Alexander Bahlmann, head of media and public relations for Continental’s Tires division. “It was the best size in comparison to a standard winter tyre; rolling resistance has been reduced by 25 per cent compared with a 16-inch tyre.”

Developing a benchmark winter product

As you can imagine safety is a key concern for tyre buying consumers all year round, but it is an even more critical influencing factor in the winter months. However, what is interesting to learn from the Michelin research behind the recent Pilot Alpin 4 launch, is that the very same consumers that actively sought out expensive cars that allow them to drive towards their performance limits and tyres that allow them to safely feel the thrill of this experience have a different view when the weather’s cold. In the summer months it seems that it is all systems go, with handling and performance (which Michelin sums up as “control”) the order of the day. In the colder months what Michelin terms “mobility” is amongst the most desired characteristics. The same consumer that was impatient to hit the limits in summer is impatient to hit the road while other drivers are stuck at home in winter.

Michelin OE on £13K electric Renault

Renault’s new electric car, the ZOE, is scheduled to be launched this year; the car, which is closely based upon the ZOE Preview concept car displayed in 2010, debuted at the Geneva Motor Show and will go on sale in the UK with a starting on-road price tag of £13,650 (after Plug-in Car Grant deduction). All ZOE models equipped with 15 and 16-inch rims will be fitted with Michelin’s new Energy E-V tyre as standard equipment.

Eco and winter performance no contradiction in latest ContiWinterContact

Visitors to the Geneva Motor Show will be amongst the first to see Continental’s latest winter tyre, the ContiWinterContact TS 850. The new range is scheduled to debut in Europe during the coming autumn, and according to Alexander Bahlmann, head of media and public relations for Continental’s Tires division, although the main focus when designing the TS 850 was on traditional winter tyre qualities such as braking and performance on snow, wet and ice surfaces, the new tyre also utilises rolling resistance reduction technology originally developed for the ContiEcoContact 5. Therefore, Continental was able to improve rolling resistance by eight to ten per cent in comparison with the ContiWinterContact TS 800.

First public airing for Goodyear’s self-inflating tyre system

Amongst the innovations on show at Goodyear Dunlop’s Stand during the Geneva Motor Show is the company’s Air Maintenance Technology, which has been under development in Goodyear’s laboratories over the past two years and now being displayed publicly for the first time. The AMT system requires no external pump, electronics or driver intervention and is promoted as a technology that relegates the need to check tyre pressure to the dustbin of history. While Goodyear Dunlop claims it is too early to predict when AMT will be ready for its commercial launch, development work continues and is being supported by grants provided by the US and Luxembourgish governments.

European-focus: Apollo Aspire 4G unveiled

Less than three years ago, Apollo Tyres acquired Dutch tyre maker Vredestein and set about developing a company that draws upon both firms’ strengths. Now, at this week’s Geneva Motor Show, Apollo Vredestein showed the world what its Netherlands and India-based research and development departments are capable of jointly achieving; the very first tyre to come out of this international collaboration – the Apollo Aspire 4G – was given its official debut on 7 March.

Trio of Conti tyres earmarked for Geneva launch

No less than three new passenger car tyre ranges are scheduled to be launched at Continental’s Geneva Motor Show stand. The German manufacturer hasn’t named the models it intends to unveil next month in Geneva, however it says the three lines are a new summer tyre for subcompacts, compacts and mid-size cars, a new winter tyre for the same vehicle categories, and a new winter tyre for electric cars.
