Delphi to Highlight Technologies at IAA

Delphi Corp plans to present 10 new technologies and to announce several new customer programmes at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt next month. The news will focus on two of Delphi’s principal concerns in Europe: environmental protection and safety technologies.

The company will show a new halogen-free recyclable cable and the first-ever integrated Driver Protection Module, which offers drivers up to 27 per cent more protection from serious injury during a frontal collision based on crash simulations.

SMMT Appoint New President

Roger Putnam, chairman of Ford of Britain, is to take up the position as president of the SMMT. He succeeds Tod Evans, former chairman, Peugeot Citroën Automobiles UK Ltd, in leading the motor industry trade association for the 12 months from June 2005.

Commenting on the announcement, Roger Putnam said: “I am proud and honoured to become SMMT president for 2005-06. The industry faces some significant challenges in balancing the needs of its customers, in coping with regulatory pressures, and in dealing with a challenging manufacturing environment. I want to play my part in ensuring that issues like skills, R&D and productivity are given the profile they deserve.”

Road Safety Forum

The Auto Mobil International 2005 motor show, Leipzig, 5-6 April, will again host the road safety forum organised by the VDIK and TÜV SÜD Group.

Amongst others the conference will address car manufacturers and suppliers, state authorities and associations as well as car safety experts and biomechanics.

The road safety event is titled ‘Integrated Safety Concepts and Reliablity’ and the two day agenda will discuss, amongst other issues, the European Commission’s Road Safety Action Plan.

Michelin Worries About Raw Material Prices

During last week’s Geneva Motor show Michelin is reported to have said that the situation surrounding raw materials is “very worrying” and rising prices will continue to place severe pressure on the company during 2005.

“This year, the environment for raw materials remains tense, which is causing strong pressure on prices, and as a consequence on our costs,” said research and development director Didier Miraton in Geneva.
“There is no situation of us having a shortage but the tension is very worrying,” he added.

Michelin has decided to raise prices by an average of five per cent in Europe until July 2005 to offset increased raw material costs. Miraton said he expected the situation to continue as mobility needs in Asia would drive demand, stressing that there was “a need to find ways to make better use of raw materials”.

Conti’s Discusses Building New Factory

Continental is currently considering plans to build a new tyre factory in Europe, according to Dr Alan Hippe, chief financial officer. If demands continue to be as strong as they are today, it would be the next logical step, said Dr Hippe speaking at the Geneva Motor Show. Such a new facility would have to be built in Eastern Europe, possibly in Lithuania, writes the Berliner Morgenpost. Recently Continental invested a considerable amount of money in Eastern Europe in order to cut production costs.

Deutsche Bank analysts reported that Continental’s presentation was both “bullish“ and “striking.” In his presentation, Dr Hippe explained that Continental had revised its ESP penetration expectations for the US market to about 18 per cent in 2006, lifting the volume target to 1 million units. The CFO also suggested that the German manufacturer could be in a net cash position as early as the end of 2005. According to the analysts, “the bottom line is the growth and free cash story continues (at least 600-700 million euros per year).”

Yokohama Exhibits Advan at Geneva Show

Yokohama Rubber will show exhibit at the 75th Geneva Motor Show, highlighting the company’s Advan flagship brand. The company will exhibit a Gemballa Cayenne fitted with 22 inch Advan ST tyres emphasising its focus on high performance technology, according to a statement. Yokohama Rubber will also exhibit its safety support technologies at the show, including its Zero Pressure System, Support Ring Run-flat System, and tyre pressure monitoring system for passenger cars.

Goodyear Sponsors Geneva Motor Show

Goodyear will be the official press sponsor of the 75th Geneva International Auto Show, when it runs from 3 to 13 March. The manufacturer will use the sponsorship opportunity to increase recognition of the new name for its fail-safe, RunOnFlat technology. Last year Michelin was responsible for sponsoring this area of the show. Goodyear joins the likes of Eurosport, Yahoo Cars, Peugeot and Mazda, in supporting the event.

Silverstone Withdraws from Motor Show

The Silverstone motor circuit has pulled out of the running to host the British International Motor Show. The SMMT confirmed the racetrack had withdrawn leaving three major venues – the Birmingham NEC, Earls Court in London and the Docklands Excel centre — pitching for the 2006 exhibition. An SMMT spokesman said a final decision on the show’s future location would be made in February.

Michelin Aims to Start Tyre Revolution

The answer is – when it is a Tweel. Michelin has been demonstrating the direction that it would like to take tyres by exhibiting one of its most recent developments at Detroit’s North American International Auto Show.

The Tweel is an airless tyre/wheel concept that consists of a band of tread attached to a set of flexible polyurethane spokes. According to Michelin executives, this design makes for a “virtually indestructible vehicle tyre” that can be tuned for handling. The same executives also concede that any practical applications could be as much as 15 years away.

Yokohama Launches ADVAN

Having exhibited some of its latest products at the year’s major automotive shows, including the Paris Motor Show and SEMA, Yokohama is officially launching its new ADVAN branded high performance products. The Japanese manufacturer has selected Dubai’s warmer climate as the venue for this event and promises the opportunity to experience the benefits of its products first hand. SEMA and VDAT Make Agreement

Specialty equipment associations SEMA and Verband Deutscher Automobiltuner (VDAT) have signed a memorandum of understanding to promote increased cooperation between their associations and member companies.

“Working more closely together with our friends at VDAT will greatly enhance the ability of the specialty equipment industry to grow on both continents,” said Christopher J. Kersting, SEMA president and CEO. “It is essential that we join forces with our friends in Europe to be proactive regarding legislative and regulatory proposals which hamper the ability of consumers to personalize their vehicles.”

As a result of the agreement, SEMA and VDAT will become members of each other’s associations and exchange market and other information of mutual interest to members. In addition the associations say they will work together on legislative and regulatory developments affecting the industry in both markets and meet regularly to promote closer relations between organisations.

“I am very much looking forward to our cooperation with SEMA,” said Hans-Joerg Koeninger, VDAT general manager. “We will work together with this powerful trade organization for uniform and clear regulations for the approval of tuning products.”

Demonstrating their solidarity SEMA exhibited as part of the VDAT booth at the Essen Motor Show. VDAT will have a booth at the annual SEMA Show.

Japan’s ‘best import’ car for 2004

The Maserati Quattroporte has won the “2004 Import Car of the Year” award, from the Japan Automotive Hall of Fame Association (JAHFA). It achieved the award on its brand image, style, craftsmanship, value for money and for being the “ultimate choice for the car connoisseur.”

Yokohama’s Aggressive Advan Brand

Yokohama Rubber is to launch its new ADVAN brand at the Paris Motor Show 2004 (Mondial de l’automobile 2004), which commences on the 25 September.

The company describes the new product as its “symbolic” brand, representing its “global concept.” Yokohama plans to aggressively confront its new business strategy through the new brand, which includes developing flagship tyre products, participating further in motorsports, and co-developing activities with world leading carmakers and tuners. ADVAN is said to represent the company’s spirit of pursuing high performance and high quality products.

The new products will be introduced in markets around the world and sale of the tyres is scheduled to begin in 2005.

First introduced in 1978, ADVAN has been used for motorsports activities and high performance tyres in Japan. Its presentation at the Paris Motor Show will be the first fully-fledged introduction in the European market. Yokohama will exhibit ADVAN Sport and ADVAN S.T, its SUV tyre. The company’s run flat tyre systems, including the Z.P.S. and the Support Ring System will also be displayed at the exhibition.

Bridgestone and Conti Join Forces to Advance TPMS

Bridgestone has teamed up with competitor Continental to develop an advanced tyre pressure monitoring system for commercial vehicles. The two companies will join forces to mass produce the system which is expected to be released into the market in 2007. The companies are aiming to position the product as a “global standard.”
