Over 500 hear 2011 TAFF Award winners named

Over 500 guests filled the King’s suite at the Birmingham Metropole hotel last night (20 October 2011) as members and guests alike celebrated recorded attendance at the 82nd National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA) annual dinner and Tyre and Fast Fit Awards (TAFF). After announcing the winners NTDA chairman David White used his speech to announce the news that the association has decided to make its REACT licence to fit qualification mandatory for members. According to the chairman, this decision was agreed in the association board meeting that preceded the evening dinner. David White continued his chairman’s speech by highlighting the newly launched “proMOTe” pro-MOT campaign, which sees the industry galvanise its energies against government plans to move the ministry of transport testing system to 4-2-2 frequency and away from annual tests. There was also talk of the winter tyre market growing to the point that it is now a significant fixture in the UK market. And finally the NTDA chairman announced that Westlake and Infinity have become the first two tyre manufacturers to commit to next year’s Brityrex 2012 exhibition.

Report: 2010’s new car sales helped repair puncture in tyre market

Higher new vehicle registrations in 2010 helped to repair a price deflation puncture in the UK tyre and tube market in 2009. According to a new report published by Key Note, the tough economic conditions in 2009 resulted in the UK market value for tyres and tubes deflating by 8.4 per cent at manufacturers’ selling prices (msp). Their view is that a boost in new vehicle registrations in 2010 and inflationary price increases helped the apparent market undo this, growing by 12.6 per cent in 2010.

Ireland gears up for tyre safety week

Our own tyre safety month is currently underway, and across the Irish Sea a similar focus is also being made on tyre safety during October. On Monday 10 October Irish Road Safety Week gets underway, and like its UK counterpart the campaign will include a range of initiatives aimed at road users, including free tyre checks.

RMI "concerned" over possible higher speed limit

Responding to recent speculation that the Government are considering raising the speed limit to 80 miles per hour on motorways, John Ball, Retail Motor Industry (RMI) MOT chairman, commented: "If cars are allowed to go faster there will be an increased need for a rigorous MOT test."

Cam Systems supports “no change” to MOT test frequency law

Cam Systems has called for no change to the MOT test, joining industry bodies such as the NTDA and TyreSafe and companies such as HiQ and Klarius in the campaign against the UK governments proposed lengthening of the time between required tests. The software solutions provider to the independent tyre industry is also urging customers to go online and petition on behalf of the “no change” movement.

Klarius appoints new European sales director

Bas Donders has been appointed European sales director for the Klarius Group. Donders will be responsible for European sales growth across the entire portfolio of aftermarket brands.

According to the company, Bas Donders has an “exemplary record of achievement” in generating sales growth via both market and product range development, having successfully headed European sales and management teams for Delphi, Valeo and other major players in the European automotive component parts supply chain.

One million driving without MOT

"It is vital that motorists MOT their vehicle to ensure it is safe to drive" commented RMI director, Stuart James responding to recent findings published by The Kwik Fit Group. The findings indicated that a staggering "1million motorists are deliberately driving without an MOT."

HiQ survey suggests illegal tyres are rising

A survey conducted by HiQ suggests that one in two British motorists are risking thousands of pounds’ worth of fines and potential driving bans by making journeys on dangerously worn tyres. 42 per cent of cars surveyed had at least one illegal tyre, with major areas of concern in the Birmingham, north east and Cheshire areas of the UK. The results are significantly up from HiQ’s last audit in 2009, when 27 per cent of motorists were driving on illegal tyres. HiQ’s retail development manager Farrell Dolan said that the results proved that despite years of highlighting the danger of bare, worn tyres, the safety message is still not getting through, saying that now the company will alter the tyre safety message it transmits to its customers.

Euro Car Parts now stock TPMS servicing parts

Euro Car Parts has put together a range of products to enable independent garages to service tyre pressure monitoring systems. Euro Car Parts’ director of communications, Donna West, explains: “TPMS is going to be massive. The technology features on many models already on our roads but, thanks to European Regulation 6612209, it will be mandatory on all new models from 1 November 2011 and on all new cars from 2014.

MOT review – no decisions yet, says DfT

The MOT review has still not been formally announced and no decisions have been made, confirmed the Department for Transport (DfT) in a letter to the motor industry. In the wake of recent press coverage on the impending MOT review and the possible changes to its frequency, the DfT wanted to clarify to the industry where the review stood. In a letter addressed to the RMI, along with other key players in the trade, the DfT stated that although test frequency was under the review it was only a small part of a much broader review. Any reference in the press stating that the first MOT test will take place when a car is four years old, rather than the current three, is purely speculation on behalf of the journalist, the letter says.

Euro Car Parts chairman to meet UK PM

Euro Car Parts’ founder and chairman Sukhpal Singh Ahluwalia will meet with the UK’s prime minister and chancellor of the exchequer when he attends a “reception for business leaders at 10 Downing Street in mid-September. Ahluwalia has invited comments from the garage trade prior to his meeting with David Cameron and George Osbourne, stating that he will use the occasion to discuss key issues such as the proposed increase in the gap between mandatory MOT tests.

HiQ adds voice to MOT changes opposition

The opposition to the UK Government’s proposed changes to the MOT test has acquired another voice, as fast fit network HiQ makes the argument that doubling the length of time between legally required tests will eventually cost motorists more: “The pockets of motorists will be hit harder than ever,” HiQ stated. Secretary of State for Transport Philip Hammond hopes to introduce the initial MOT test for new cars after four years instead of three, as it currently stands today.

IAAF launches official MOT e-Petition

An application for a petition to abandon proposals to change the frequency of the MoT test lodged by the IAAF has been accepted. The e-petition went live today. Now the federation is urging everyone in the trade, as well as motorists, to add their voice to the IAAF‘s demand that “the ill-considered proposals to relax the frequency of MoT testing be dropped.

Out of touch with [super] highway reality?

No I am not referring to the IT skills of the tyre business at large. To be fair, in recent years our industry has taken giant steps towards the optimization of its processes using computers and better use of the Internet to reach customers. Just look at the continuing proliferation of tyre information and retails sources online, not to mention the trade’s increasing presence on social networking sites and latterly the emergence of a number tyre price comparison sites. The, of course, there’s EDIWheel but that’s all another article (see October’s e-commerce feature for more on this). No, on this occasion I am talking about the UK government policy, metrocentricity and online tyre browsing – or rather the lack of it in Westminster.

Halfords Autocentres points increasing age of cars

The effects of the recession mean that more people are keeping their cars for longer and putting off the major expense of buying a new vehicle, according to new research from Halfords Autocentres. However, the mature motors of today are a long way from the old bangers of the past thanks to better engineering and maintenance techniques.

According to experts in the field, drivers are recognising that maintaining and running an older vehicle is more cost effective than buying a newer model.
