According to TyreSafe, drivers are increasing their motoring costs as well as the risk of being involved in an incident by ignoring tyre maintenance. The organiser of Tyre Safety Month is reminding motorists that regular tyre checks are a ‘win-win’ as they will help road users stay safe and avoid unnecessary bills. To help them, TyreSafe has drawn together a list of tips as a reference guide.
The Daily Telegraph Motoring column, Honest John, has recently produced an article detailing the cars with the greatest MOT failure rates in the UK, along with the regions with vehicles most likely to fail the test. Analysis of more than 400m MOT records from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) by consumer website HonestJohn.co.uk shows that one in six cars fails its first test, with brakes, lighting and tyres among the most-common reasons.
The Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI) has outlined its policies in a document to coincide with the 2017 general election. “Maintaining the current 3-1-1 MOT testing structure, and implementing a clear three-point strategy to tackle mileage adjustment, are two of the main policies outlined in RMI Policy Statement ahead of the 2017 general election,” said Sue Robinson, director of the RMI.

Many drivers put their car in for an MOT early in order to find out if any faults need repairing, in the belief they can still use the vehicle until the old test runs out despite any discovered issues. However, if their car fails the MOT, it is immediately deemed to be no longer road legal, regardless of how long the previous MOT’s validity has remaining.
Randstad is expressing growing concern about proposals to extend the MOT test from three years to four for newer vehicles.
