Get Yourself Seen by the Roadside

Workwear manufacturer, Dickies, has launched a new range of high visibility clothing designed specifically for the vehicle rescue and recovery industry. In distinctive high visibility orange and navy all the garments feature regulation 5cm reflective strips and are fitted with a number features intended to assist those working in this tough occupation. For example the Recovery Poly/Cotton Trousers are fitted with multi-entry cargo pockets complete with a pocket for a mobile phone and radio. Kneepad pouches that will take flexible cushioned kneepads are also fitted to relieve the discomfort of working in a kneeling position on hard road surfaces. Combining regulation safety and detailed construction, this range of high visibility garments offers comfort, durability and protection when working at roadside.

Michelin Launches In-Car Power System

Michelin has launched a range of power converters that change 12volt DC battery current into 240volt AC mains power for laptop computers, mobile phone chargers, power tools and televisions.

With more and more mobile staff spending time on the road and making even less frequent visits to the office, Michelin has determined that greater power capacity is required for portable machines. Whilst a laptop has its own battery power, this capacity is limited and only an AC power source will operate the computer in the car and recharge the battery.

Hankook Increases Sales Force

Hankook Tyre UK Ltd has announced the appointment of three new regional sales managers. Andy Doherty has been appointed as regional sales manager for the North West. He has 18 Years experience in the tyre industry, working for 10 years as a commercial and mobile car tyre technician and eight years as sales manager for a number of national wholesalers.

Hofmann is promoting another first. The new ‘DynaPower Box’ is the first self-contained dynamometer on the market. Designed to overcome the environmental concerns of placing a performance ‘Dyno’ in or around a busy workshop, the ‘DynaPower Box’ is in essence a 4WD dyno built into a weather proof cabin with it’s own sound-proofing, exhaust extraction and cooling fans. All the customer needs to supply is an IP65 plug and a flat piece of tarmac. So no costly civil works or soundproofing and potentially no planning issues.

Kneesy Does It from Dickies

During their working lives motor mechanics and tyre fitters must spend hundreds of hours working on their knees. This unavoidable practice is not only uncomfortable but can be extremely painful, particularly when a small piece of debris is accidentally knelt upon. But a more serious and long-term injury can result from long hours working on the knees.

Kwik-Fit Fleet Extends Arval Contract into Third Decade

A business partnership stretching over more than 20 years between two of the biggest names in the UK fleet industry – Kwik-Fit Fleet and Arval – has been further extended with the signing of a new two-year contract. The new contract, with an option to extend for a third year, gives Kwik-Fit Fleet AllStar preferred supplier status with Arval for tyre replacement and the provision of other fast-fit services across the leasing and maintenance management company’s 160,000-strong UK vehicle fleet. AllStar recognition is being awarded only to suppliers who meet strict criteria to deliver service quality and value to Arval customers.

Fire at All Tyres Depot

A Cornish industrial estate in the town of Launceston was evacuated after a fire broke out at the nearby All Tyres depot. According to BBC news reports, Firefighters were called to the scene at All Tyres on the Pennygillam Industrial Estate. Four fire engines and a mobile control unit were present. According to the reports, people were evacuated from 19 businesses on the estate. There were no reports of any injuries.

Maywood Reaches Isle of Man

Maywood Equipment Group has supplied The Douglas Corporation on The Isle of Man with the largest platform lift in their considerable range. The Finkbeiner 25 tonnes platform lift was part of a major equipment order secured by Maywood. Maywood is the sole importer for the Finkbeiner range of electro-hydraulic mobile column lifts as well as this platform lift which is available with capacities from 25 to 50 tonnes and platform lengths from 6.5 to 18 metres.

Lease 360 Evolution Signs with Kwik-Fit Fleet

Established contract hire, leasing and fleet management company lease 360 evolution plc has signed a new three-year solus tyre management and fast-fit services contract with Kwik-Fit Fleet.

Wakefield-based lease 360 evolution, which was launched almost four years ago, now has 3,500 vehicles on its books. Kwik-Fit Fleet, which already supplied a raft of fast-fit services to lease 360 evolution customers through both its nationwide centre network and mobile operation, will additionally now supply fixed monthly cost tyre management under the terms of the new contract, which went live in April.

ContiNetwork Expands into Ireland

Continental has today confirmed its plans to further expand the ContiNetwork beyond the UK through the appointment of Advance Pitstop as the ContiNetwork Partner responsible for the Republic of Ireland. This move facilitates ContiNetwork’s growth into Ireland and marks the second phase of increased geographical coverage – the first being the recent appointment of Modern Tyre Group in Northern Ireland.

Top Technician 2006 Results

The names of finalists in the Top Technician 2006 competition will be announced on March 24. The live final will be held at the Automotive Trade Show (25-27 April, NEC Birmingham) on the Top Technician stand, number 1531.

Of the 500 technicians that originally entered, only 36 were invited to attend the semi finals at three regional ATA approved test centres in Croydon, Hinckley and Manchester. They undertook ATA at diagnostic level and were independently assessed for the purposes of the competition by Mark Softley from MototeK and Ian Gillgrass from the IMI.

Female Drivers ‘Avoid Motorways’ Due to Breakdown Fear

Almost one-in-five women drivers boycott Britain’s motorways for fear of breaking down, a survey shows. More than two-and-a-half million refuse to drive on motorways, resulting in travelling an extra 384 miles each a year, according to research conducted by insurance company Direct Line.

Lombard to Use Fit4Fleet

Lombard Vehicle Management is taking a different approach to fleet tyre provision, which it says will give customers a marked improvement in the service they experience. The company has separated the tyre authorisation function from the actual fitting process. The authorisation and invoice auditing is being carried out remotely by tyre experts Fit4Fleet. Fit4Fleet is not a tyre supplier to Lombard Vehicle Management, so for the first time the service is being controlled by an independent expert.

Delphi Secures Apprentice Training with Nationwide Autocentres

Delphi’s service and aftermarket training centre has been selected by one of the UK’s leading vehicle repair networks, Nationwide Autocentres (NWAC), to train young apprentices aged between 16 and 24 attending its new technician accreditation programmes.

Each course lasts three years and, over this period, the first pilot group of 53 students from 120 NWAC in the Midlands will receive a total of 18 weeks hands-on training. In addition to becoming familiar with diagnostic techniques, Delphi has designed a bespoke outward bounds programme to encourage team building, trust and leadership skills which are seen as equally important to overall personal development.

ATS Euromaster is tapping into the new wave of mobile phone commerce by providing an SMS service to keep fleet drivers moving.

Motorists can now text “tyres” to 82025 to locate their nearest ATS Euromaster service centre and will receive details such as the depot’s address, contact details and the exact straight-line distance from the position of the mobile phone. Though free, users will be charged the standard texting rate set out by their service provider.
