Tracking System Receives CE Certification

Australian company Rojone Pty Ltd has announced that its EziTrak® Micro self-monitored vehicle tracking system has just received CE Certification. CE marking is a declaration by the manufacturer that the product meets all the appropriate provisions and health & safety requirements of the relevant legislation implementing certain European directives.

EziTrak® Micro is a monitoring, protection and GPS tracking system giving car and vehicle owners personalised, self-monitoring of their vehicle. This early warning anti-theft device is interactive and has no monthly or annual monitoring fees.

It is half the size of previous models, measuring only 80 mm (L) x 61 mm (W) x 35 mm (H). This makes it ideal for use in motorbikes plus plant machinery. The outer casing has a low sheen black finish, which makes it even harder for thieves to locate, and the unit comes complete with an internal vibration sensor.

AA and Saga to Merge

Saga, which specialises in selling to the over 50s, is to merge with the AA in a deal valuing the combined firm at £6.15 billion. The deal will create a company with more than 11,000 employees, would value the AA business at about £3.3 billion. Permira and CVC bought the AA for £1.7 billion in 2004.

Chief executive, Tim Parker, who previously ran Kwik-Fit for CVC and who implemented cuts to the AA’s loss making mobile tyre fitting business, is expected to gain between £40 million and £80 million from the deal. Parker is estimated to have gained £20 million following the sale of Kwik-Fit.

Referring to the AA/Saga merger, Paul Maloney, national officer of the GMB union commented: “By our reckoning, the managing partners stand to make £300 million from owning the AA for less than three years…This money was made on the back of sacking 3,500 people, cutting wages and call centre staff and lengthening the working day.”

Rimex Supply Launches Portable Earthmover Tyre Press

Canada’s Rimex Supply Ltd has unveiled the Mobile Press, a portable tyre press for earthmover tyres. Engineered to easily remove an earthmover tyre from a multi-piece rim, the Mobile Press can be used on 51 to 63-inch tyres.

As removing an earthmover tyre from its rim is quite often time consuming and hence costly, Rimex believe the appeal of such an easily transportable product is clearly evident. The Mobile Press can be brought into most worksites and is easily stored when not in use. Rimex describe the unit as user-friendly and claim that, given proper training, any employee would be capable of safely operating the Mobile Press with ease and confidence. The Mobile Press carries the added bonus of costing substantially less than a standard tyre press.

Give Your Old Phone a New Home

Unipart has joined forces with automotive industry charity BEN to set up a recycling service for unwanted mobile phones. Collection points will be installed across Unipart’s sites and BEN will mail 25,000 pre-paid envelopes to its supporters encouraging them to join in.

For each phone received, Unipart will donate £3 to BEN, helping them carry out their work. Unipart Group Chief Executive, John Neill, said: “BEN is a charity close to our hearts at Unipart because of our automotive industry heritage.

New Commercial TPMS from Mobile Awareness

Transportation safety products company, Mobile Awareness, released a new generation of TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) products geared toward Commercial Trucks, Utility Vehicles, RVs and Trailers – the MA-TPMS. The system automatically and continuously monitors tyre status, alerting the driver to abnormal conditions with an audible alert and LCD display indicator. It not only warns of low-pressure and high-pressure levels, but also monitors hazardous tyre temperature conditions. All three warning settings are programmable by the user.

“There are many advantages to monitoring and maintaining properly inflated tyres, the most important being the reduction of fatalities and injuries from tyre related hazards,” remarked Gary Rothstein, president of Mobile Awareness. “As we expand our offering of transportation safety products, tire monitoring will be a key part of our focus to prevent vehicle accidents.”

Alloy Wheel Repair System Proving Popular

Yorkshire based manufacturer of smart repair systems, Ayce Systems, states that the company’s new all-in-one alloy wheel repair kit has experienced dramatic sales growth since its introduction last year. Known as Wheelrite Pro, the system is a self-contained unit for repairing and polishing kerbed, scratched and corroded alloy wheels, and features pneumatic self-centring on a rotary turntable, an integral beadbreaker, tyre inflation and pressure gauge and independent drive for grinding and polishing wheels.

Research Reveals UK Motorists Unprepared For New Driving Rules

Research by headset manufacturer Plantronics reveals that UK motorists are unprepared for the recent change to UK driving regulations. Effective from the end of February, drivers will receive a £60 fine and three penalty points on their licence, for using a hand-held mobile phone when driving.

Kwik-Fit Fleet and Leaseplan Sign New Five-Year Deal

Kwik-Fit Fleet has won a five-year multi-million pound tyre repair, replacement and management contract with LeasePlan UK. The deal with LeasePlan UK, one of the country’s largest contract hire and fleet management companies with almost 120,000 funded vehicles on its books, will run until the end of 2011. The new contract builds on a business relationship between the two companies, which dates back to 2004.

Conti & Microsoft to Share Technology

Continental AG and Microsoft Corp have announced the formation of a strategic partnership between the two organisations in order to develop wireless technology for vehicles.

The companies are in the process of creating devices that will allow electronics such as mobile phones and MP3 players to connect wirelessly to a vehicles’ audio system, and they will begin supplying this technology to Ford later in 2007.

The value of the Ford contract has not been disclosed.

Scrap Tyres Can Be Used to Filter Wastewater

Dr. Yuefeng Xie, associate professor of environmental engineering at Penn State Harrisburg, has developed a method that uses crumb rubber to filter wastewater, the US university has reported. “My research has found that crumb rubber, derived from waste tyres, can be used as a filter media,” Xie explains. “The crumb rubber could be used for treating wastewater, ship ballast water, and storm water.”

ATS Euromaster Wins Nepo Approved Supplier Status

The North Eastern Purchasing Organisation (NEPO) has selected ATS Euromaster as one of two preferred suppliers of tyre services to local authorities participating in this contract stretching from the Scottish borders through to Tyneside, Wearside, County Durham and Teesside.

This marks the first occasion ATS Euromaster has been awarded preferred supplier status by NEPO in over 10 years and sees ATS Euromaster share the contract with Hi-Q Tyre Services. The contract runs until September 2008, with the option of a further two 12 month extensions.

Kwik-Fit Fleet Wins Pendragon Deal

Kwik-Fit Fleet has won a two-year sole supply contract with Pendragon Group to supply fast-fit and tyre management services to the three contract hire and fleet management companies within the organisation. The new deal, which Kwik-Fit Fleet won after fighting off competition in a competitive tender, means Britain’s largest independent fast-fit company will supply services to the 25,178 vehicles operated by Pendragon Contracts, Bramall Contracts and Vardy Contract Motoring.

Telecom Italia: Tronchetti Provera Resigns

Following the public dispute initiated by Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi, Marco Tronchetti Provera has now resigned from his position as boss of Telecom Italia. Although Tronchetti Provera always claimed the acquisition of the Italian Mobile Telephone Company TIM and its integration into Telecom Italia was an excellent strategic move, last week he revealed that a split into two separate companies again would be even better.
