Mitas high-horsepower tyres helped a Claas Axos 320 tractor weighing four tons to “walk on water”. Thanks to careful calculation and Archimedes’ principle, the tractor successfully navigated the port and then returned to dry land without the captain getting his feet wet. Mitas, part of Trelleborg Group, and its partners carried out the unusual stunt in the Netherlands. One of the world’s largest agricultural tyres, Mitas1250/50R32 SFT, was fitted on the rear axle and Mitas 750/55R30 SFT on the front axle of the floating Claas tractor.
Every four years the Bavarian farmers association holds its ‘Central Agricultural Festival’ at the Theresienwiese in Munich, alongside the world-famous Oktoberfest beer fair. This year is a festival year, and the week-long show will begin on 17 September, the day on which Munich’s mayor taps the first Oktoberfest barrel. Tyre maker Mitas, now a member of the Trelleborg group, will exhibit at the Central Agricultural Festival and says it will use the show as an opportunity to inform visitors “about the newest tyre developments within the Mitas and Cultor brands.”
Switching over to a larger wheel rim for agricultural applications is unnecessary when fitting the new Mitas EMR-01. The manufacturer specifically designed the size 20.5R25 tyre for wheel loaders used in farming and gave it a tread similar to that of a tractor tyre. The Trelleborg Group company comments that this tread offers superb self-cleaning properties and outstanding traction.

Three years ago the company announced an extension of this licence until 2019, however recent events have spurred Continental AG to reclaim its agricultural tyre brand ahead of this date. Continental has now announced a €49.9 million investment in its own agricultural tyre business, and the company will begin producing agricultural radials next year.

Approval has been given for Sweden’s Trelleborg AB to acquire ČGS Holding a.s., parent company of Czech tyre maker Mitas. In a statement issued this week, the European Commission shared that its assessment of the deal focused on the extent to which the two companies’ original equipment and aftermarket activities overlapped. The Commission found that Trelleborg and Mitas agricultural tyres “focus on different price and quality tiers” and are therefore “not close competitors.”
