Tyre industry pioneers, Michelin has a long history. Having begun in 1889, Michelin is now the second-largest tyre manufacturer in the world after Bridgestone and larger than both Goodyear and Contineantal.
Cooper Brothers has moved its wholesale delivery fleet to a Michelin Agilis CrossClimate policy. The family-owned business has been selling and fitting tyres across Lanarkshire for more than 40 years. Keen to get the best policy for its fleet of 20 Ford Transit vans, the company ran a tyre test over several months – fitting five of the vehicles with different brands of tyre.
The Michelin Group informed the 619 employees at its tyre production facility in La Roche-sur-Yon, France this morning that it will close the site by the end of next year. In addition, 74 people at Michelin’s Cholet plant, employees working in roles related to the supply of rubber mixed to the La Roche-sur-Yon site, are also affected by the closure.

The natural rubber supply chain is very complex. It includes around six million farmers, 100,000 intermediaries and over 500 processing plants. To bring greater transparency to the supply chain, two ‘top-five’ tyre makers are now cooperating with a third party in a joint venture: Michelin and Continental, together with IT agricultural specialist Smag, have formed a company to further develop and deploy a technological solution for mapping sustainability practices. Tyre production at Michelin’s plant in Bad Kreuznach, Germany has been supplemented by a new facility dedicated to making 18- and 19-inch rim diameter tyres. Its entry into operation introduces the larger diameter into the plant’s production portfolio for the first time. The new machinery replaces equipment used to manufacture 14- and 15-inch tyres, products that have seen a significant drop in customer demand.
Long-distance touring enthusiasts rejoice: Michelin had introduced a GT version of its Road 5. The tyre maker states that the Michelin Road 5 GT has been “developed in exactly the same spirit and to the same rigorous standards” as its 2018-launched sibling, but focuses on the specific requirements of touring bike riders looking for “safety, comfort, long life, stability and sheer riding enjoyment” in a range of conditions.
