Michelin Dundee Management Discuss 2008 Production Levels

Staff at Michelin’s Dundee tyre production plant are reportedly concerned about the outcome of management negotiations over future production levels at the factory. The Baldovie factory currently produces six and a half million tyres a year and is scheduled to do so again in 2007. Production levels for 2008, however, are still being decided, with talks currently being held between officials at the Dundee plant and in Clermont-Ferrand, the Dundee Evening Telegraph added.

Michelin to Raise Tyre OE Prices

French tyre group Michelin has announced plans to raise OE tyre prices worldwide to compensate for higher raw material prices. OE tyre prices for cars and light truck products will be raised by between 6 per cent and 8 per cent on average from 1 October 2006. Contrary to other reports, the price increases will only affect OE tyres.

Hoyer Group Sign European Tyre Contract with Michelin

Bulk transport logistics specialist Hoyer is in the process of switching its tyre procurement to Michelin contracts in a number of major European countries, following the success of its Michelin-fitment policy in the UK. Hoyer UK Ltd has been fitting Michelin tyres across its 1,200-strong tanker fleet since 1997, managed through ATS Euromaster. The success of this arrangement has seen the adoption of a ‘pence per kilometre’ (PPK) contract in the Republic of Ireland, supported by Haughton & Son Tyres Ltd. It has also seen similar contracts set-up for Hoyer Group fleets in Belgium, Finland, Germany, Holland and Luxembourg.

Button Wins First Grand Prix

Jenson Button scored his first Formula One victory last weekend in what Michelin called a “topsy-turvy Hungarian Grand Prix.” Michelin’s partners dominated the early stages of the rain-affected race and Button swept to the front of the field on lap 52, when world championship leader Fernando Alonso stopped with a rear wheel problem.

Michelin Pilot Road Promotion

Michelin is launching a summer campaign designed to benefit retailers and consumers purchasing its Pilot Road sport touring tyres during August and September. Consumers will get a free A3 Michelin European road atlas worth £11.99 with every pair of Pilot Road tyres purchased and will be entered into a draw to win £1,000 worth of World of BMW touring holiday vouchers.

Pause For Thought

The setting and format of the 2004 NTDA conference was so well received last time that this year the association decided to invite members, suppliers and industry observers back to sunny Spain. Held at the Don Carlos Hotel just outside Marbella at the end of June, the conference was opened by keynote speaker Jim Rickard, managing director of Michelin Tyre plc and chairman of the Tyre Industry Federation (TIF). Numerous important issues were discussed, but delegates agreed that the most pressing topics under discussion were: potential government imposed regulation of the industry and the poor consumer perception of the tyre business. The trade’s use of the Internet, issues relating to end-of-life tyre disposal and of course run-flat tyres were also discussed.

Continental Makes 38 million euros Profit in Timisoara

Continental’s Timisoara, Romania subsidiary posted gross profit of 38 million euros (137.8 million Romanian new lei), an increase of approximately per cent in euros from the previous year. At the same time, the turnover of Continental Automotive Products went up by over 33 per cent in euros last year, to approximately 217 million euros (786.6 million lei).

According to local newspapers this makes the German company the biggest player in Romania. Michelin Romania posted about 200 million euro (727. 3 million RON) turnover last year. The increase in Michelin’s business, some 40 per cent exceeded that of Continental in terms of growth rate, but the French have been operating at a loss for a number of years. However Michelin Romania says it expects to get back into the black this year, the news reports added.

New Michelin Run-Flat Tyre for Mini

Michelin has launched a new size of its run-flat Primacy HP ZP (Zero Pressure) tyre which is suitable for fitment to the Mini. The 195/55 R 16 87H size is said to be available now and a V rated version will be available in August.

Michelin Issues ‘Reassuring’ Profit Warning

Michelin has reassured market watchers that it will be able to achieve an operating margin of around 8 per cent for the full year, following the successful achievement of the same figure (equivalent to 644.7 million euros) in the first half of 2006. The company had previously predicted that it would achieve an operating margin of 8.8 per cent. Michelin achieved first half net sales of 8,023 million euros, up 7.1 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Schumacher Closes in on Alonso

Michael Schumacher increased his title chances by winning the German Grand Prix this weekend, leaving title rival Fernando Alonso struggling in fifth place after lumps reportedly fell from his tyres. The Hockenheim crown was Bridgestone’s 100th win of the 165 Grand Prix races it has participated in. “We improved the car so it’s a package which is the reason why we can perform as we do perform. Although I have to say it was a bit of a surprise being that much in front,” said Bridgestone-equipped race-winner Michael Schumacher. The Ferrari of Felipe Massa took second place on Bridgestone tyres.

Michelin Raising P/LT Prices

(Akron/Tire Review) Michelin North America said today that it is raising prices on all of its replacement market passenger and light truck/SUV tyres sold in the U.S. by 3 per cent. The increase will be effective Oct. 2.

Michelin, Union Reach Tentative US Tyre Agreement

Michelin and the United Steelworkers on Tuesday reached a tentative agreement on a new contract for hourly workers at three of its BFGoodrich tyre plants in the United States. Details of the agreements, which cover about 3,450 workers, will not be released until the union has completed ratification votes, Michelin spokeswoman Lynn Mann said. The contracts covering the Michelin union workers in North America were to expire at midnight on July 22, but both sides had agreed to temporary extensions while talks continued. The agreement covers two of Michelin’s BFGoodrich plants in Alabama and one in Indiana and is to be used as a template for contract talks with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and Bridgestone Corp. in North America.

Michelin, Union Agree to Extensions; No Progress Elsewhere

(Akron/Tire Review) The United Steelworkers’ (USW) master contracts with Michelin North America, Goodyear and Bridgestone/Firestone expired Sunday at midnight without incident and without a walkout by union workers. But twice over the weekend the union and Michelin agreed to extensions of their contract – one 24-hour extension on Saturday and a 48-hour extension on Sunday. The contract, which covers Michelin’s unionized plants in Tuscaloosa and Opelika, Ala., and Fort Wayne, Ind., is now scheduled to end at midnight on July 25.

Michelin Strike Possible; No Contract Extension for BFNAT

(Akron/Tire Review) Unless significant headway is made, say news reports, union workers at three Michelin North America plants were planning to go on strike when their current contract with the tyremaker expires at midnight July 23.
