Michelin launches bespoke European CrossClimate 2 all-season tyre

In 2015, Michelin disrupted the all-season tyre market with the launch of the CrossClimate – a tyre that approached year-round performance from a different direction. Now, following the launch its successor (the CrossClimate 2) in the US at the end of 2020, the world’s largest tyremaker has released a new European market-orientated version which builds on the already impressive performance of the first generation and tunes the concept demonstrated by the US edition for the European market. For example, according to Michelin, the Cross Climate 2 “delivers a 10% reduction in rolling resistance when compared to its best-selling predecessor thanks to a Cool Running Sidewall designed to improve fuel efficiency or electric vehicle battery range…” amongst other enhancements.

Michelin to make tyres containing recycled plastic by 2024

Germany’s IAA motor show moves to Munich this year and, rebranded as IAA Mobility 2021, is the country’s first major international event since the easing of lockdown restrictions. It begins on 7 September and has attracted more than 1,000 exhibitors and speakers. Michelin will be there, and during IAA Mobility intends to highlight plans to make its tyres as sustainable as possible. The tyre maker’s efforts will include six Michelin teams roaming through downtown Munich during the event, encouraging people to recycle plastic waste.

Michelin buys out Allopneus SAS

Michelin has added the last 60 per cent of leading French tyre e-tailer Allopneus to the 40 per cent stake the leading tyremaker bought in 2015. Michelin now “intends to develop its knowledge of customer behaviour and the purchasing process and thus continue to offer the best possible experience, from online information seeking, right up to tyre fitting”, company representatives wrote in a statement dated 25 August.

Michelin appoints Conor Twomey UK & Ireland communications director

Michelin Tyre PLC has appointed Conor Twomey as Communications Director for the UK & Ireland. The role encompasses press and public relations, social media, events and internal communications across the UK and the Republic of Ireland and covers the entire Michelin brand portfolio, including car, motorcycle, bicycle, truck, bus, agriculture and construction tyres, the Michelin Guide as well as the company’s growing interests in sustainable industries such as hydrogen power and high-tech materials.

US Army testing Michelin’s Tweel technology

The US Army is testing Michelin Tweel airless tyre technology via its Yuma Proving Ground operation and specifically its Tropic Regions Test Center (TRTC).

While the deserts of Southwest Asia have been the most common location of American military involvement for nearly twenty years, the US Army reports that the majority of the world’s conflicts have occurred in tropical areas. Amongst the US Army’s key questions: will muddy, biomass-laden jungle terrain destroy the integrity of wheels and tyres on a combat vehicle?

Switch to Michelin means no punctures for Britannia Bus

Northampton-based Britannia Bus, which operates five local service bus routes, is on course to eliminate instances of punctures across its six-strong fleet after beginning the switch to a Michelin tyre policy two years ago. Managing Director Derek Taylor says he would previously suffer a puncture within the fleet at least once a month, but since beginning the move to a Michelin X Multi Z policy, the new tyres have delivered 100 per cent uptime.

Michelin announces North America price increases

International News

The price of certain aftermarket Michelin, BFGoodrich and Uniroyal passenger and light truck tyres will rise by up to eight per cent in the USA and Canada from 1 September. Prices for on- and off-road commercial tyres will increase by as much as 14 per cent, while prices for motorcycle tyres will be up to four per cent higher from the start of next month.

Michelin publishes “solid” H1 2021 results

The Michelin Group has shared details about what chief executive officer Florent Menegaux calls “a very good first half.” In an environment shaped by an enduring health crisis, a robust market recovery was tempered by major disruptions in the global supply chain. In this context, Michelin increased tyre volumes by 22.8 per cent, sales 19.6 per cent year-on-year, and achieved €1,421 million in segment operating income for the period.

Michelin appoints passenger transport sales manager for Services & Solutions

Michelin has appointed Dan Lamb passenger transport sales manager for Services & Solutions. Lamb’s promotion to the role comes after 27 years with the company. He reports directly to Andrew French, director of Services & Solutions and will be responsible for the commercial aspects of Michelin’s relationship with key fleets in the public transport sector.

Richert resigns as Birla Tyres CEO

Herve Frederic Richert will step down as chief executive officer of Birla Tyres Limited as of tomorrow. Richert, whose industry experience includes two decades at Michelin and a seven-year stint at Giti Tire, tendered his resignation with the Indian tyre maker on 7 July.

Five more years – Rotala signs new Michelin Effitires contract

Transport company Rotala PLC has extended its relationship with the Michelin Services and Solutions team by signing a further five-year Effitires contract. Michelin considered the renewal a sign of Rotalla’s “continued confidence in the product” as well as a “shared focus on sustainable transport.”
