NTDA Dinner at Brityrex – Bigger than Ever

Attendance at the NTDA/TAFF Awards dinner is reaching record levels with over 400 members and guests already booked to attend. Commented NTDA National Chairman John Tarbox: “The dinner is the key business event for the UK Tyre Industry and running it alongside the exhibition has certainly contributed to this year’s record support.” During the Exhibition the NTDA stand at Brityrex will be focusing on one of the key health and safety issues in the trade, manual handling.

In partnership with Penny Hydraulics and Renault UK the stand will showcase the dangers associated with the handling of modern truck tyres both for roadside repairs and on mobile units.

Michelin deal for Australian Safari

Promoters of the Australian Safari off-road rally, Octagon Australia, have announced the appointment of Michelin & BFGoodrich Tyres as major sponsors of the event. Michelin has been chosen as the official motorcycle tyre supplier, while BFGoodrich Tires will be the official automotive tyre supplier for the event. The agreement covers both the 2007 and 2008 Australian Safari events.

As part of the sponsorship, Michelin & BFGoodrich Tires representatives will travel with the event, supplying and fitting tyres for competitors along the 5500-kilometre route, which starts in Kununurra, Western Australia on August 24 and finishes in state capital Perth on September 1, 2007.

“Michelin and BFGoodrich Tires are thrilled to be involved in such a fantastic world class rally event, particularly one that caters for both automotive and motorcycle”, said Adam Storey, Michelin Australia marketing manager.

Michelin Tempts Aircraft Tyre Buyers

On April 1 Michelin Aircraft Tire Company in the US launched a promotion through its Authorized Service Centers intended to lure potential customers over to the French brand. The “Upgrade to Michelin” program tempts customers with an 20 per cent instant rebate should they choose to convert all the main landing gear tyres on their aircraft from a competitor’s brand to Michelin. Those converting all main and nose landing gear tyres on their aircraft will receive a 25 per cent discount on the purchase price of their Michelin tyres.

Terry Schultz, director of general aviation sales for the Michelin Aircraft Tire Company believes that the program “challenges existing centres to utilise the tools and resources we have designed to expand their sales and receive rewards in return.” The offer covers purchases of Michelin AIR X, Michelin Air, and Michelin Aviator products.

Michelin Pumps Blow Away Competition in Auto Express Test

Michelin foot-pumps have taken an impressive one-two clean sweep in comparison tests run by Britain’s biggest selling motoring weekly, Auto Express. The Michelin twin-barrel pump was awarded the “Best Buy” 5-star rating for performance and accuracy whilst the Michelin single-barrel foot pump took the runner-up “Recommended” award and a 4-star rating.

The two foot-pumps from the Michelin motoring accessories range were compared with eight competitors’ products in detailed tests carried out by Auto Express’ technical experts. The accuracy of the pressure gauges and their pumping power were at the heart of the tests, which also awarded points for stability in use, build quality, hose length and ease of tyre-valve connection.

Michelin Primacy Hits the OE Teens

Michelin has disclosed that, in the year following its introduction, its Primacy high performance tyre has been approved as OE on no less than 13 new cars. These OE agreements cover everything from saloons to minivans to sports coupes, and every vehicle category in the 2007 car market features at least one model equipped with the tyre.

The Michelin Primacy HP is fitted as original equipment on the Audi A3, A4 and TT, the Citroën Picasso, the Ford Mondeo and Galaxy, the Kia Cee’d and Opirus, the Lexus GS, the Peugeot 607, the Renault Laguna, the Toyota Auris and the Volvo S80.

The tyre has received a fair amount of press due to the claim it provides at least 25 per cent longer tread life than any competitor in the same premium range, according to the findings of a test conducted in the third quarter of 2005 by German technical services firm TÜV SÜD Automotive.

India’s tyre industry is steadily coming of age. In a country whose new car market has witnessed phenomenal changes since the days when consumer choice was more or less restricted to what colour Hindustan Ambassador one would purchase, the tyres made and sold have also needed to change with the times, both in quantity and quality.

Figures released by India’s Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) report steady growth in tyre production figures across all market segments, with an overall 12 per cent growth to January 2007, with approximately 61 million tyres produced during the preceding 12 months. During February 2007 alone 5.9 million tyres were produced, with 1.18 million of these for passenger cars. And although other segments showed even greater growth – tractor tyre sales in February were on average more than 25 per cent greater than a year earlier – the passenger car market seems to be where all the action is taking place.

Michelin US to Close Ohio Plant

Citing high production costs as the underlying factor, Michelin North America, Inc. has announced plans to close the facility it operates in Mogadore, Ohio and transfer the plant’s tyre production to its BFGoodrich factory in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The Mogadore facility employs approximately 70 people and is involved in the short run production of specialty tyres, such as rock crawling and competition tyres.

The transfer of production to the BFGoodrich plant will begin in July and be complete by late October, and which time the Mogadore plant will close. The BFGoodrich Tuscaloosa facility currently employs approximately 1,275 people and produces BFGoodrich Tire brand passenger car and light truck tyres.

Michelin Embarks on Truck-Side Adverting Campaign

The Michelin Man is being featured in a new high profile advertising campaign on the side of trucks within the Great Bear Distribution fleet, which are used to deliver more than three million Michelin tyres across the UK. Promoting the message “Michelin, for performance that lasts,” the brightly coloured graphics show a 6ft high Michelin Man running alongside a car tyre, and links with the return of the Michelin Man in 2007 to television advertising.

The first stage of the campaign sees the graphics fitted to 22 new Mercedes-Benz Atego rigids, plus a further 50 demountable box bodies. Before the end of the year, they will be joined by a further eight new Ategos and 40 demountable box bodies.

Michelin Cutting New Hire Pay in Canada

(Akron/Tire Review – Nova Scotia Business Journal) New Michelin employees won’t be getting as much pay come May 1. The company told employees recently that it’s introducing a new pay rate scale, which will mean all new hires after the end of the month will make $3 less per hour. The reduction also includes flex employees, who will no longer get the regular full-time rate if they’re hired on or after that date.

By 2009, veteran workers who switch jobs on a different pay scale within the company will also feel the pay rate reduction pinch. One employee, whose name has been withheld, says many employees are “really upset” with the change. “No one’s happy about this,” said the 22-year veteran worker of the plant. “Everyone’s just stunned and flabbergasted. Not everyone’s a veteran like myself. It may not affect me, but it could if I wanted to switch jobs in the future. I’d lose $5 an hour.”

Russian Tyremakers Meet to Discuss Industry Concerns

Russia’s largest tyre and rubber manufacturers have held their inaugural joint round table meeting to discuss industry concerns. This meeting took place on April 6 as part of the first sitting of a Chamber of Commerce and Industry subcommittee set up to advocate the interests of the country’s industry.

The meeting was attended by representatives of Russia’s major tyre and rubber companies – Sibur-Russian Tyres, Amtel-Vredestein, Nokian Tyres, Michelin, Nizhnekamskshina, Group TADEM, RTI-Kauchuk and by government officers and companies and associations that rely on tyre and rubber production.

Michelin to Appeal FIA Dismissal

A French court, the Tribunal de Grande Instance de Paris, has dismissed Michelin’s request to annul the International Automobile Federation (FIA) decision to appoint Pirelli the sole tyre supplier to the world rally championship (WRC).

On April 4 Michelin released a press statement indicating it intends to appeal February’s decision to award Pirelli sole supplier rights for the 2008 to 2010 seasons.

Uniroyal Expands Laredo Cross Country Line

(Akron/Tire Review) Michelin North America is launching four new sizes of the Uniroyal Laredo Cross Country tyre for light trucks and SUVs. Considered a “powerline” tyre, the four new sizes give the line 36 total sizes, covering 90 per cent of the most popular SUVs and pickup trucks, MNA said. The tyre comes with a 60,000-mile limited treadwear warranty.

The new sizes include P255/65R16 106 S, LT235/85R16 LRE, P255/65R17 108 S, and P265/65R17 110 S, and target such light duty vehicles as Dodge Dakota, Durango and Ram 3500; Nissan Frontier, Pathfinder and XTerra; Toyota 4Runner, Sequoia, Tacoma and Tundra; Ford F-250 and F-350; and Lexus GX470, according to MNA.

Transense Losses Widen

Transense Technologies PLC additional 2006 losses partly due to a new accounting charge on share options and a £178,000 patent cost amortisation charge. The AFX news aency reported that losses for the year to December 31 widened to £1.33 million from £1.14 million a year ago, on a 9 per cent increase in sales to £604,000. However the company remains convinced that large revenues will develop over the medium-term. At the end of 2006 Transense signed deals with American automotive company Lear Corporation and Michelin in the US.

Michelin to Increase China Investment – Update

As previously reported, a government official in China has released information indicating Michelin intends to spend US$300 million expanding its tyre production facilities in China. The company has signed a memorandum with officials from the Liaonong (northeast China) provincial government related to new truck and passenger car tyre projects.

When the two projects are implemented, the company’s existing base in Shenyang, the capital city of Liaoning, will become the world’s largest tyre production base, producing 12 billion tyres per year.

Michelin has already invested US$150 in its Shenyang plant, and the additional $300 million will be used to fund two new projects, which will cover a floor area of 300,000 square metres.

Ultra High Performance

Attending the Geneva Motor Show is a great opportunity to see the newest vehicles around close-up, not to mention a good chance to check-out which tyres car manufacturers are brandishing on the latest concepts and releases. So when, after visiting the motor show, Tyres & Accessories was given the opportunity to drive a beautiful Ferrari F430 from Geneva back to London on Pirelli Sotto Zero cold weather tyres, we jumped at the chance.

Put the car through its paces, they said. Drive it on snow and take the tyres to the limit, they said. And we would have done, had there have been any. But in March even the Alps are short on snow and ice. There were, however, plenty of mountain roads; more than a sprinkle of rain; and cold temperatures consistently below seven degrees. So while the sight of the F430 sports coupe sticking to sheet ice was out of the question, driving on wet “snow-chain only” Alpine roads in March was definitely on the menu. And the truth is these conditions are probably more akin to what the drivers experience during the majority of the cold weather season.
