Tyre industry pioneers, Michelin has a long history. Having begun in 1889, Michelin is now the second-largest tyre manufacturer in the world after Bridgestone and larger than both Goodyear and Contineantal.
Modern Tyres has supplied a set of Michelin X Multi regional truck tyres to Craigavon-based MST Transport for fitment to a very special restoration of an iconic Scania truck. The Northern Irish haulier has painstakingly restored a Scania Royal Centurion 143 – one of only 100 Centurion models released in 1991 to celebrate the Swedish manufacturer’s 100th anniversary.
From 1 March, motorhome drivers keen to extend the camping season beyond the summer months have a new tyre option in the form of the Michelin CrossClimate Camping. By summer 2022 Michelin will offer the tyre in eight dimensions, a line-up that covers 99 per cent of the market.
Ferrari has selected Michelin as an official tyre supplier for its new 296 GTB. Michelin will supply two different tyres for the car – the predominantly road-oriented Pilot Sport 4S K1 and the road legal Pilot Sport Cup 2R K2. The tyre maker says this latter product is for “drivers wishing to push the limits of their car on track.”
Michelin has once again topped the tyre table within Brand Finance’s ranking of the world’s strongest and most valuable brands. Michelin achieved a brand value of US$7.7 billion and a brand strength index score of 85.8 out of 100.
The crisis currently unfolding in Ukraine is placing logistics and transportation in Europe under strain, and like many manufacturers, Michelin Group is facing “major” issues supplying its plants and delivering to customers. The company says it will work to “optimise operations and adapt flow management” by stopping production at some of its European plants for a few days in the coming weeks. Easingwold-based business Coast-to-Coast Recycling has just replaced its first set of 600/70 R30 Michelin RoadBibs, that were fitted on a JCB Fastrac 4220, having recorded over 60,000 miles transporting waste to and from various sites across North Yorkshire. This is more than double the mileage of the previous tyre brand fitment.
After receiving a SIMA gold medal for innovation in late 2016 for its 2-in-1 tyre, Michelin is launching a new version of the EvoBib. The upgraded Michelin EvoBib will be available from 1 April, initially in the familiar VF 710/70 R 42 and VF 600/70 R 30 sizes suited to tractors between 200 and 300 hp, however Michelin intends to expand the range in 2023 by adding new dimensions for more powerful tractors.
Tyre comparison website Tyre Reviews has put ten popular tyres for performance cars to the test, making the brand-new Continental SportContact 7 a winner in its first outing on the independent assessment circuit. Reviewer Jonathan Benson fitted the ten tyre combinations to a BMW-powered Toyota Supra in sizes 255/35 R19 (front) and 275/35 R19 (rear) for the test, which he conducted over nine disciplines at Conti’s Contidrom facility. Given that the tyre was proven at the circuit, and is at least 12 months newer than any other product in this test, it is perhaps a little unsurprising that the SportContact 7 prevailed, but with reasonably comfortable first-place finishes in the dry and wet handling and braking tests, Tyre Reviews concludes that the tyre sets “a new standard for the UUHP segment.”
Compagnie Générale des Établissements Michelin (the Michelin Group) delivered segment operating income of 2,966 million euros and a margin of 12.5 per cent, which was “back in line with 2019”, according to the company. Specifically, Sales rose by 16.3 per cent to 23,795 million euros and segment operating income stood at 2,966 million euros.
A new Michelin tyre aims to satisfy demand in two-wheeler commuter markets around the world. The Michelin City Extra is available in dimensions that suit scooters, step-throughs and small motorcycles, and replaces both the Michelin City Pro and City Grip Pro ranges.
Michelin has announced the launch of its fifth generation Pilot Sport and the upgraded Primacy 4+. The new summer tyres represent the manufacturer’s newest solutions for the ultra-high performance and touring segments, following up multi-award winning predecessors. Both tyres are designed to deliver on Michelin’s efforts to decrease the environmental impact of its tyres by increasing the longevity of the tyres’ key safety performance characteristics.
After a four-year absence, The Tire Cologne is preparing to make a comeback in May. Continental, Falken, Hankook, Michelin and Pirelli have already signed up as exhibitors. Bugatti produced just 60 examples of the Chiron Pur Sport and fitted each and every one of these 1,500 hp, 217 mph hypercars with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres. Michelin supplies the semi-slick to Bugatti in the front axle size 285/30 R20 (99Y) and rear size 355/25 R21 (107Y). But after Bugatti observed cracks on the rear tyres fitted to a prototype Pur Sport, it is notifying owners to return their vehicles.
Cornwall-based contractor Grigg-Agri has invested in another set of VF 420/85 R34 Michelin YieldBib tyres for its two Bateman RB35 sprayers after the original equipment rubber lasted twice as long as the tyres it had run in the past. The two sprayers are used to support a wide range of arable crops across the county, clocking up significant mileage on country roads as they travel between farms.
If you weren’t aware that Michelin has developed a system of sails for larger boats and ships, then you’re not alone. But it has indeed, and presented an automated, telescopic, inflatable wing sail system that can be fitted on both merchant ships and pleasure craft at the 2021 Movin’On event. The Wing Sail Mobility (WISAMO) system will soon be installed on a ConRo vessel sailing between Spain and the UK.
