Tyre industry pioneers, Michelin has a long history. Having begun in 1889, Michelin is now the second-largest tyre manufacturer in the world after Bridgestone and larger than both Goodyear and Contineantal.

Tyre test: Auto Bild crowns Michelin & Pirelli its winter monarchs

The tyre boffins at Auto Bild have been busy of late, evaluating no fewer than 56 products for their 2022 winter test. After looking at the size 255/55 R17 tyres’ braking performance in wet and snowy conditions, Auto Bild selected the 20 with the shortest average stopping distances and subjected these to further testing on dry, wet and snow-covered surfaces and also examined their comfort, noise, mileage and rolling resistance. The motoring publication declared two tyres joint test winners and gave five products the highest ‘exemplary’ rating.

Camso plants integrated into Michelin footprint

The leadership team of two manufacturing sites in Emporia (Kansas, USA) hosted a ribbon-cutting event last week to celebrate joining the Michelin manufacturing network and their inclusion in the Michelin North America footprint, which consists of 22,500 people and 34 plants in the United States and Canada.

The Tyre Industry Awards 2022 were presented on 6 October at Birmingham’s VOX Conference Centre during the National Tyre Distributors Association’s 93rd Annual Dinner. The awards ceremony was sponsored by Sailun Tyres for the eighth consecutive year, while supplier member Maritime Cargo Services sponsored the dinner. Michelin exceeds 2030 sustainability targets with latest tyre prototypes

Two new Michelin tyres take the manufacturer a step closer towards its goal of production with 100% bio-sourced, renewable or recycled materials by 2050. Approved for road use, the non-production car and bus tyres respectively contain 45% and 58 % sustainable materials. With “performance levels strictly identical to current tyres” they prefigure the technologies we’ll see in Michelin products within two to three years.

Michelin names Mazzocchi B2C Sales VP for Europe North region

On 1 October 2022, Agostino Mazzocchi begins his new role as Vice President B2C Sales for the Michelin Europe North region. He is taking over from Theres Gosztonyi, who served in this capacity for three years and is now moving on to a new role outside the Michelin Group.

Continental “working at full speed” to restructure rubber supply chains

The goal at Continental is to exclusively obtain natural rubber for its tyres from responsible sources as of 2030. Confirmation of responsible sourcing is essential to natural rubber’s status as a sustainable raw material, and gaining this confirmation requires traceability within the supply chain. Although completely seamless traceability is currently technically impossible, Continental says it is “working at full speed” on a blueprint for the sustainable and responsible structuring of natural rubber supply chains.

Hendrick European, provider of customised logistics and transportation services across Ireland and Europe, has seen exceptional mileage from the Michelin X Multi D tyres it runs across its fleet – with one set clocking 500,000 km. The Dublin-based firm, which specialises in road transport, groupage and distribution of all types of goods, operates 95 trucks and 150 trailers from depots in Ireland, UK and Poland.

Michelin becomes global tyre partner of MAN Truck & Bus Driver Training

MAN Truck & Bus and Michelin have announced a new training partnership at Hanover’s IAA Transportation show. From January 2023, Michelin will begin a three-year global cooperation with MAN ProfiDrive, the driver training programme from the Munich-based firm. MAN said that Michelin’s commitment to sustainable motoring made the tyre manufacturer a good choice of partner. The programme trains commercial vehicle drivers in the safe operation of safety and assistance systems, fuel-efficient driving, and the use of telematics services, as well as other topics relevant to fleet managers and entrepreneurs in the transport sector.

Tyrepoint becomes Michelin Quality Centre

Maidstone independent tyre dealer Tyrepoint has joined the Michelin Quality Centre network. The family-run business was founded less than four years ago by father and son team Karl and Mark Webber. The joint managing directors have strong industry experience; Karl established his first dealership in 1978. Tyrepoint has built its customer base by offering premium service supported by online reviews and social media marketing. Martin Thompson, Michelin’s AGB brand manager UK & Ireland said, “we’re delighted to give them our seal of approval.”

Michelin launches employee share plan

A job well done may be its own reward, but sharing the resulting profits benefits both employee and employer. This seems to be a principle that Michelin understands well, as the tyre maker has announced its ‘Bib’Action’ employee share ownership plan. Open to 120,000 members of its workforce, Michelin says this latest initiative illustrates its determination to “have its employees collectively rank among its main shareholders.”

Michelin to display licensed vehicle accessories at Automechanika 2022

Michelin will showcase its non-tyre vehicle accessories at Automechanika in Frankfurt (13-17 September 2022, Stand D88 in Hall 12.1). The brand had 52 licensees in around 130 countries in 2021, together selling more than 31 million Michelin branded products. Michelin says that this puts Michelin Lifestyle Limited at number 46 in a ranking of the world’s most successful licensors. Highlights of the Michelin Automechanika stand will include high-pressure washers, Michelin Eco cleaning and car care products, the new Michelin Jump Starter range, windscreen wipers, snow chains, car mats, and hydraulic vehicle jacks capable of lifting up to three metric tons, making them particularly suitable for SUVs.

European rollout to follow UK launch of Michelin materials handling training

Tyre technicians responsible for keeping fleets of forklift trucks and other materials handling equipment on the move will benefit from a new dedicated training programme from Michelin. The new materials handling tyre fitting course, which also embraces management of solid wheels, is being held at the Michelin Training and Information Centre (MTIC) in Stoke-on-Trent. Michelin says the course “lays the foundation for training excellence internationally” and hopes to roll it out across Europe.

Fuel-saving Michelin tyres go the distance

UK and European haulier MDF Transport has clocked nearly 400,000 miles on the Michelin X Multi Energy tyres running on the drive axle of one of its Volvo FH trucks. Reporting this accomplishment, Michelin notes that the specialist transport provider specifies all new vehicles on its tyres, having found them to last “longer, reduce fuel consumption and ultimately be cheaper to run than any other premium fitment on the market.”
