Michelin has detailed the ways in which its Michelin Connected Fleet system has helped parent company Michelin cut harsh driving events by 25 per cent across the 54 vans operated by its Services and Solutions division in the UK. The company has achieved the savings after introducing the fleet management technologies it deploys for end-user fleets. In the initial six-month, technology is improving driver behaviour after reducing speeding events by 46 per cent, particularly in 30mph and 50mph zones, as well as cutting engine idling by 14 per cent. Over 12 months, the driving style changes are projected to help improve fuel efficiency by 5.8 per cent across the fleet, reducing CO2 emissions by 5.6 per cent per kilometre travelled.
Michelin completed the acquisition of Flex Composite Group on 27 September 2023 under the terms announced on 19 June 2023. According to the purchaser, “Michelin and FCG have thus created a leader in high-tech engineered fabrics and films”. The acquisition forms part of the Michelin in Motion 2030 strategy and is said to mark “a significant step forward in the development of the group’s polymer composites activities”.
SAS Logistics is switching to an exclusive Michelin tyre policy across its commercial vehicle fleet – including eight biomethane-fuelled tractor units – as part of the company’s ongoing sustainability drive. Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) and Siemens have signed a Memorandum of Understanding regarding a collaboration to support the European expansion plan that Enviro announced together with Antin Infrastructure Partners earlier this year. Although the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders indicates that battery electrics will hold a 17.8% new car market share by the end of 2023, vehicles powered from the socket remain the subject of lively debate and sensational headlines. Tyres aren’t exempt from such discourse, as the Daily Mail made clear in July when maligning these as the “dirty secret behind your electric vehicles.” To bring some common sense back into the EV tyre conversation, Michelin has shared its views on the subject.
Michelin started retreading tyres back in 1923. In the years that followed, the process was refined and demand grew, with the Michelin Remix process (REmould, MIchelin, and X the designation for the French tyremaker’s radials) born in the 1960s. Demand for retreads continued to increase, leading to the expansion of production at the Stoke-on-Trent plant in 1968. Since then, around 30 million worn tyres have been remanufactured at the Michelin plants in Stoke-on-Trent, UK and Homburg, Germany. With around 10 million of those retreads manufactured at the Campbell Road, Stoke-on-Trent operation, Tyres & Accessories went to see the latest developments at the largest retreading facility in the UK and arguably one the most modern retreading facilities in Europe.

A further size has joined the Michelin Xtra Defend construction tyre range, and Michelin says that from December 2023 this 33.25 R 29 tyre will replace the X-Super Terrain + in 800/80 R 29. Michelin developed this new tyre specifically to fit the Volvo A60H, the largest articulated dump truck in the world, which is primarily used for mine and quarry applications.
Scandinavian Enviro Systems has reported an after-tax loss for Q2 2023 that is some seven times larger than its net revenue, but the company remains confident of its future following a directed share issue in May and as a definitive investment decision regarding its planned joint venture plant in Uddevalla, Sweden draws nearer. With the assistance of Monitor via Modular Finance, Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) has prepared a register of the company’s 15 largest owners as of 30 June 2023. Following the announcement of a cooperation agreement with Antin in March and a directed share issue in May, new Enviro shareholders include Handelsbanken Fonder, Swedbank Robur Fonder and Skandia Fonder. Michelin did not participate in the issue, but although it no longer has a 20 per cent stake in Enviro, it remains the largest shareholder by a considerable margin with 16.28 per cent.
