Micheldever Group says it is “absolutely delighted” that Micheldever Tyre Services/Protyre has been shortlisted for five NTDA Tyre Industry Awards this year. The categories it has been nominated for are:
Giti Tire has developed its GT Radial all-season product range, available in the UK from exclusive distributor Micheldever, off the back of an encouraging run of sales for its initial product for this growth market. Tyres & Accessories spoke to Brian McDermott, country manager UK for Giti Tire, to get the latest on how the manufacturer is shaping its range for the segment, which appears to have gained more of a footing in the UK than specialist winter tyres have previously managed.
Micheldever Group won a trio of the annual TyreSafe Awards at this year’s event at St George’s park. Micheldever Tyre Services (MTS) won Wholesaler of the Year for the second consecutive year, while Protyre made it six-in-a-row for the Large Retailer of the Year accolade. The hat-trick was completed by MTS wholesale director Alan Baldwin, who was given the Lifetime Achievement Award ahead of his retirement from the industry later this year.
Micheldever Tyre Services (MTS) has appointed Graham Mitchell as its new wholesale director. Mitchell will take over the key strategic role following Alan Baldwin’s retirement, scheduled for November. In a 17-year career in the tyre industry, Mitchell has acquired extensive experience across both UK and European markets. He joins MTS from Cooper Tire, where he held senior management roles that included sales director for UK and Western Europe and UK and Northern Europe sales director.
Protyre, along with parent company Micheldever Group, has joined a select group of employers in signing The Armed Forces Covenant, and in doing so commits to the Covenant’s five pledges. The company says it is also proactively seeking to take on a raft of ex-forces personnel and will get the ball rolling by holding its first insight day, an event designed to give service leavers a glimpse of life working for the company.
After years of expansion amongst the top 20 UK tyre retailers, the latest data shows that this trend peaked in 2017/2018 when the top 20 accounted for 2014 branches. The same 20 tyre retailers had 1980 branches between them in 2018/2019. And what’s more, the reorganisation of one retailer alone accounted for a 40-centre decline in branch count, with the overall figure remaining positive due to growth at other chains. Here Tyres & Accessories analyses the branch count data in the context of 10 years of comparable research.
Falken Tyre and Micheldever Tyre Services have extended a regional advertising campaign to bolster UK awareness of the Falken brand.
General Tire have teamed up with the Hudson brothers on Swim Wild – a follow-up video campaign to the award winning Wavemaker that launched earlier this year. Swim Wild documents three brothers escaping the pressures of modern life with the aim to show UK motorists that ‘Anywhere is Possible’.
Falken Tyre specialist retailer Walsall Wood Tyre & Service has hosted a tyre safety event as part of TyreSafe’s National Tyre Safety month in October 2018. The event was jointly hosted by leading wholesaler and exclusive Falken distributor Micheldever Tyre Services (MTS) with more than 30 guests in attendance throughout the evening.
The winners of the 2018 “Tyre Industry Oscars” have been announced at the 89th National Tyre Distributors Association annual dinner, with a Bridgestone double in the tyre manufacturer and staff training and development categories headlining the event. More awards were added this year for excellence in tyre retail, with small, medium, and large business categories, as well as an overall winner. Presenting was television personality Mark Durden-Smith, who injected welcome energy and humour into procedings. Tyrepress also announced the results live via its Twitter feed.
Pictures of de-mounted tyres removed from cars at Micheldever retail businesses look more like scrap than tyres taken of road-going vehicles two weeks ago. And this has made some company representatives suggest that the problem of illegal wear is worse than ever.
Tyre wholesaler Micheldever Tyre Services and a number of its tyre manufacturer suppliers recently raised £7000 in a charity auction in aid of Motor Neurone research on 21 September 2018. Micheldever executives thanked the tyre manufacturers (Bridgestone, Continental, Falken, Goodyear, Michelin, Pirelli and Yokohama for their “exceptional generosity”.
In last year’s ranking of the top tyre retailers in the UK, Tyres & Accessories predicted that the pace of change in the top 20 chains by branch count would result in some jostling for position. This has proved entirely accurate, as two major acquisitions have brought two of 2017’s top 20 into the fold of higher ranked companies, leading to both Micheldever/Protyre, leapfrogging HiQ into fourth place as predicted last year, and Lodge Tyre, into the top 10 from joint-14th last year, making significant jumps in this year’s table. Most other retailers have held relatively stable positions in terms of the number of stores, while our most recent additions to the table, Eden Tyres (15 stores) and Elite Garages (13) were identified as narrowly missing out on places last year.
Micheldever Tyre Services (MTS) has begun 2018 with the launch of new tyre products into its distribution line-up, with plans to grow the product lines throughout the year. As well as a new Falken tyre, the wholesaler will commence the distribution of the Sumitomo brand, as discussed with Tyres & Accessories in December, with the BC100 pattern.
