Mobile Tyre Changer From Hofmann Megaplan

Hofmann Megaplan has recently introduced what the company claims to be the most capable tyre changer ever designed to be used in a mobile fitting van.

The megamount 401 XL Racing works on the space-saving ‘swing-arm’ principle that has proved so popular over the years in mobile fitting vans, but that has also presented limitations in terms of the range of wheels they can handle. The 401 overcomes these limitations by utilising the ‘Quadraclamp’ turntable system from the 701 model that allows clamping up to 26″, and the ‘megafit’ arm for handling stiff, low profile and run-flat tyres.

Micheldever Appoints New Kumho Brand Manager

Micheldever Tyre Services has announced the appointment of Jason Burgess as its new Kumho Brand Manager. Micheldever holds the distinction of being the largest Kumho distributor in Europe, and UK sales of the brand are rapidly growing – indeed, Micheldever reports that Kumho has become an important component of the company’s continued growth, growth that saw 2007 tyre sales reach six million units.

“We are delighted to have recruited someone of Jason’s quality and experience”, said Alan Baldwin, Micheldever wholesale director. “We have enjoyed massive success with the Kumho brand, and to find such an outstanding brand manager as Jason will be a significant benefit to MTS and the Ecsta Performance Centres network.”

New Products Ready to Join Growing Kumho UHP Range

Europe is currently a market of much activity for Kumho, and the manufacturer reports that its OE business here is growing, the latest addition to the company’s original equipment portfolio being the high performance Ecsta KU19 in size 245/45R18 for the new Mercedes-Benz Viano X-Clusive. Supply of this particular KU19 size has been added to the company’s global OE business, which includes as customers Chevrolet, Chrysler, Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi, Smart, SsangYong, VW and Daimler AG, to whom Kumho has supplied tyres for the A-Class model since last year. In the replacement market Kumho’s profile has also grown rapidly, thanks to the support of national distribution partner Micheldever Tyre Services, Northern Ireland distributor Modern Tyres and the ECSTA Performance Centre network, arguably one of the most successful retailing programmes of its kind.

Micheldever Enhances Logistics with New Appointment

The continued development of Micheldever Tyre Services, a significant player in the UK passenger car and 4×4 tyre wholesaling scene, has led to the appointment of a new company logistics director. Dave Haddock, formerly director of logistics at B&Q, has come on board at a time when Micheldever reports an increasing appreciation of logistic and transport functions as a crucial factor to the company’s continued success and expansion. Micheldever believes Haddock’s appointment will provide the impetus needed to create an industry leading warehousing and transportation facility.

Tyre Golf Day

The (Alternative) TWG was set up about 10 years ago by Martin Stiles of Victoria Tyres and the members used to meet once a year down in Marlow to discuss the state of the trade and to have a good Christmas ‘blow out’.

The last meeting was about three years ago due to Martin leaving the trade, since when the group has been reformed by the committee of Andy Baron (Iverson Tyres) and Paul Ruddock (Stapletons).
The format is a golf and social event afterwards, twice a year and players are by invitation only.
There are around 25 in the group and 16 met for the first golf day in April at Staverton Park Golf Course. The 16 were:

Falken Launches ZE 912

January saw the launch of Falken’s new ZE 912, which is exclusively distributed by Micheldever Tyres in the UK. In addition to the performance benefits that the new asymmetrical tread pattern has to offer, the Falken ZE 912 also includes a new tread wear indicator and is said to be “proving a great success with the Falken dealer network.” Bob Thomas from Grove Street Tyres Wantage commented: “The new 912 has proved very popular with our customers,” adding: “The new asymmetric pattern is really eye catching and combined with the FK452, Falkens UHP offering makes it an easy brand to retail”.

Vicki Tillson New Lassa UK Sales Manager

Lassa Tyres has appointed Vicki Tillson as its new UK Sales Manager. Based from her home in South Yorkshire, Vicki will cover the entire Lassa UK distributor network. One of the key objectives for Vicki and Lassa in 2008 will be to assess the current UK distributor channel and to ensure the most appropriate partners are appointed to represent the Lassa brand. Tillson previously worked with well-known wholesaler operations Stapleton’s and Micheldever.

Martin West, Lassa International Director of Marketing and Business Development, commented – “We are delighted to welcome Vicki to the team. She is well regarded within the tyre industry and we look forward to her leading the development of the Lassa brand within the UK distributor and wholesale market.”

Micheldever Develops Two-Wheel Efforts

The Micheldever name is well known across the tyre trade. As one of the leading UK wholesalers, Micheldever reports a turnover of £230 million, generated by selling a total of 7 million tyres each year. However, the fact that 70,000 of these are two-wheel products is something could easily be overlooked amongst all the masses of passenger (PCR) and 4×4 tyres that pass through the company each year. To those in the PCR tyre trade, this kind of volume may sound relatively small for a leading wholesaler, however in terms of the national two-wheel tyre market, this 70,000 tyres equates to just under 10 per cent share of the market. What’s more, the business has been operating at this level for the last three to four years, and as a motorbike tyre wholesaler for a decade.

Micheldever Refits Tavistock Tyres with Pro-Align’s Equipment

One of Micheldever’s newest acquisitions, Tavistock Tyres in Devon, has undergone an extensive refurbishment programme, including the replacement of equipment. According to those involved, the aim from the outset was to fit out the workshop to a very highest standard, achieve the optimum in customer service and efficiency/revenue generation. In order to achieve this, Micheldever selected key equipment from Pro-Align’s ‘world leading’ Hunter equipment range. The improvements and reorganisation at Tavistock Tyres, has meant they have now been able to create a new dedicated alignment bay, headed by the Hunter Imaging Alignment System.

Brityrex 2009 Appoints Steering Committee

Peter Gaster, group managing director of KRT and current chair of the NTDA, has agreed to lead a new steering committee, which was formed by the NTDA to support the organisers of Brityrex in the run-up to Brityrex 2009. Alan Baldwin, David White, Ashley Croft and Darren Duguid are just a few of the other well known industry names that have committed their time to the project (full list below). “We are delighted to attract such a wide range of talent from our sector and I look forward to working with the group to further develop this vital show for the UK tyre industry,” Peter Gaster commented. The first meeting of the steering group will take place in London on Thursday 6 December.

Micheldever CEO Runner-up for Director of the Year

Micheldever Group Ltd CEO, Paul Fox, was pipped to the post for the Institute of Director’s (IoD) Director of the Year Award in the £25 million+ turnover category. Jonathan Neame of Shepherd Neame brewery won the award, with Steve Barber of technology company Xyratex also nominated. The results were announced at a Dinner and Awards ceremony held on 8 November in the Nash Room of the Institute of Directors, 116 Pall Mall, London.

Paul Fox joined Micheldever in February 2006 (as result of the Graphite Capital-backed management buyout) along with finance director Richard Sawney. In December 2006 Graphite Capital backed the first acquisition by Micheldever Tyre Services since the company was bought in February 2006. In this move Micheldever acquired two large retail sites, Cambridge and Stortford Performance Tyres, from the Company’s private owners, who retired upon completion. According to an official statement, this purchase demonstrated Micheldever’s intention to pursue similar transactions in the future.

Micheldever Chooses Hofmann Megaplan

Micheldever Tyres have chosen Hofmann Megaplan as a preferred equipment supplier following an “extensive evaluation of their products.” Micheldever, which operates a number of retail sites under the Micheldever and Pro-Tyre banners, took the decision to review their equipment supply source and as such reportedly trialled machines from a number of manufacturers. Prior to the news Micheldever’s record breaking Micheldever Station retail outlet ran an exclusive supply agreement with Snap-On.

According to company representatives, Hofmann Megaplan equipment, in particular the megamount 701XL tyre changer, performed to their complete satisfaction and received positive reviews from those who put the machines through their paces.

Ashley Croft Returns to Stapletons as a Consultant

Former managing director, Ashley Croft, has returned to Stapleton’s to act as a consultant with special responsibility for working with the management to further develop Stapleton’s as one of the country’s leading tyre wholesalers and retailers. In February Croft resigned as Warehousing, Logistics and Wholesale Sales Director of Micheldever Tyre Services, having been involved in the company’s management buy out in February 2006.

At the time he told Tyres & Accessories that the decision to leave was entirely amicable, saying that his original brief was to expand Micheldever’s wholesale and distribution base to a national level and that that project has now been completed.

Micheldever Releases First H-Rated 18-inch All Terrain 4×4 Tyres

In line with the company’s UK-focused product development, Micheldever/Southam Tyres have just released a number of new General Tire 4×4 sizes, including what the company describes as the first all-terrain 4×4 tyre in the world capable of H-rated performance with an 18-inch diameter. The new sizes are as follows:

255/60hr18 Grabber AT2 – According to Southam, this is the first all-terrain tyre available in this extremely important size for Land Rover Discovery, Range Rover, Isuzu Rodeo and Mitsubishi L200. Drivers and end users have “widely requested an upgrade product over the standard road pattern OE fitments,” according to company representatives. The only 18” ‘H’ rated All-Terrain tyre in the world, the 255/600r18 joins its hugely successful 255/55hr18 stablemate.

Paul Furlong Joins Micheldever as Motorcycle Brand Manager

Micheldever is continuing to build its motorcycle tyre wholesale operation with the recruitment of Paul Furlong as Motorcycle Brand Manager. Paul has 12 years industry experience in the motorcycle tyre niche, most recently working for one of the largest bike tyre wholesalers where he was responsible for winning and maintaining some of their largest accounts.
