New Hoses From ContiTech

Higher performance, smaller installation spaces and more demanding customers – these are the typical challenges facing automobile manufacturers. New hydraulic, flat, and moulded hoses from ContiTech Fluid Technology can help them handle these challenges.

EnovaPremier Buys T&WA

Goodyear has announced that Louisville-based wheel mounting business, T&WA Inc., has sold all of its assets to newly formed EnovaPremier LLC. No details relating to the price of the sale have been released. Louisville-based T&WA provides mounted and balanced wheel assemblies destined for auto manufacturers including Honda Motor Co., Mercedes-Benz and Toyota Motor Corp. EnovaPremier is a Cincinnati-based company run by Ed Rigaud, a former executive at Procter & Gamble Co. It plans to maintain T&WA’s Louisville headquarters. Formned in 1995, T&WA also has operations in Paris, Kentucky., as well as in Alabama, Indiana and Michigan. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. has held a minority stake in T&WA since 1999 and will record a $30 – $35 million charge in its fourth quarter as a result of the sale.

MercedesService Cardholders Now Protected by Conti Tyre Service

An agreement made with Continental means that MercedesService Card customers can now utilise the ContiBreakdownService, the tyre service provided in the UK and 23 other countries by ContiEuroService. The service operates around the clock, 365 days a year, and enables customers to obtain help simply through calling the Mercedes-Benz Customer Assistance Centre – the centre will in turn notify the respective national ContiEuroService organisation, thus eliminating any potential language barriers. Costs for the service are reported to be fully transparent, with invoicing according to fixed prices, thus MercedesService Card customers are spared any unpleasant surprises.

Weller Truck Drives 400,000km on Michelin

A Mercedes-Benz Atego 1828 is operating on the same Michelin tyres fitted as original equipment when it rolled off the production line in November 2001, despite having covered over 440,000 km. The 18 tonner is owned by Staffordshire-based Weller Packaging and is fitted with Michelin 295/80 R22.5 XZE2 and XDE2 tyres. It is in operation five days a week transporting packaging materials from Shenstone (near Lichfield) to customers nationwide, with the vehicle starting each two-day distribution run with a maximum 9.2 tonne payload.

Nigel Hastilow, a driver and Transport Manager for Weller Packaging, explains: “Getting the best performance out of a set of tyres is all down to attention to detail. We carry out weekly tyre inspections, including pressure checks, which ensure our tyres are always in prime operating condition.

Improved Varta PROmotive CV Batteries

Johnson Controls has revised its range of Varta-branded CV replacement batteries to replicate all OE applications. Johnson Controls is the largest European supplier of OE batteries to the truck and bus industries. The range of Varta PROmotive CV batteries now provides virtually total coverage of the UK commercial vehicle parc, with capacities ranging from 140 – 225 Ah.

Heavy Duty batteries are rated 140 and 170 Ah, while Super Heavy Duty are offered with 180 or 225 Ah capacities. All four products use calcium-silver technology to provide reserves of power for high loads at high temperatures and longer service life than conventional lead acid battery technology.

Conti Tyre on M-B C-Class for Driving Events

(Akron/Tire Review) Continental AG’s ContiSportContact 3 has been named the “official tyre” of Mercedes-Benz USA’s C-Drive national ride-and-drive series, featuring the automaker’s redesigned C-Class sedan. The ride-and-drive events began last month and continue through October, hitting major cities like New York, Washington, Atlanta, Miami and Dallas.

“We are very pleased to be a part of the Mercedes-Benz C-Drive series,” said Ed Marohn, director of automotive aftermarket sales, Continental Tire North America. “The ContiSportContact 3 is our premier performance tyre, and is a perfect fit with the sporty, agile performance of the Mercedes C-Class.”

Conti Produces One-Off OE Tyres for Concept Cars

Concept vehicles are a main attraction at International Motor Shows, and Continental is working to ensure the tyres gracing a number of these attention grabbers at the Frankfurt show will inspire the imagination. According to Conti, the tyres on these concept cars are an integral part of the look and feel of a vehicle, therefore the company has a specialist team of designers working on eye-catching designs.

The Continental design team’s task is to give standard tyres a unique look to complement the manufacturers’ concept car. This varies depending on the vehicle’s style and audience. Sports car tyres require aggressive tread patterns that give an impression of speed. These also often feature colour to highlight the tread or the tyre sidewalls. For SUVs, the manufacturer expects prominent tread blocks for maximum off-road traction – the smaller the wheel arch and the broader the tyre, the more prominent the sidewall design. If more space is available for the tyre, focusing upon the tread design is a greater priority.

Pirelli Gets M-B Fitment

(Akron/Tire Review) Pirelli has been named the OE tyre for Mercedes-Benz’s ML550/350 and R350/320CDI vehicles, which will be produced at the carmaker’s US plant in Alabama. The tyremaker will supply Mercedes-Benz with its Pirelli Scorpion Assimetrico in size 255/50R19 103W, which will be produced at Pirelli Tire North America’s MIRS plant in Rome, Georgia.

Yokohama Advan Sport OE for 3 AMG Models

The world-renowned official Mercedes Benz tuner, Mercedes AMG, has selected Yokohama’s Advan sport tyres for OE on three models – the CL 63 AMG, CL 65 AMG and ML 63 AMG. The CL 63 AMG and CL 65 AMG will ship with the Advan Sport V103 with 255/35ZR20 XL (Extra Load) size fitted the front and 275/35ZR20 XL for the rear. The 4×4 ML 63 AMG will come wearing the Advan Sport V103A, with 295/40ZR20 106Y size rubber fitted to both front and rear wheels.

Yokohama state they are proud to have met the high technical standards set out in the process of development with Mercedes AMG and are confident the selected tyres meet the AMG requirements of high-speed stability, comfort, handling and braking in wet and dry conditions. “MO” (Mercedes Original), which indicates approval of the tyre by Mercedes-Benz, is stamped on each one.

News Sprinters For ATSE

ATS Euromaster is in the process of taking delivery of 25 new Mercedes-Benz Sprinters for its mobile car and van tyre fitting fleet – one of the largest of the nationwide fast-fit networks in the UK. According to the company, the move marks the arrival of a new breed of mobile service van, incorporating an array of features designed to help staff maximise both productivity and safety.

Tim Richards, Group Vehicle and Equipment Manager at ATS Euromaster, explains: “We asked everyone who uses the vehicles for their recommendations, with the end result being a specification which marks a major step forward in mobile working. One of the major benefits is a more spacious interior layout with the addition of better storage facilitie…these vehicles also feature the most modern fitting and balancing machines available on the market.”

Beru TSS a Factory Option for Audi R8

Audi’s R8 has become the latest in a string of performance vehicles to offer drivers and passengers the added safety of Beru’s Tire Safety System (TSS). The recently launched sports car comes fitted with a 420HP engine capable of propelling the vehicle to speeds in excess of 180 mph, and the optionally fitted TSS provides the added safety of direct monitoring that constantly checks tyre pressure whilst the vehicle is moving and pre-warning the driver of damage through insufficient tyre pressure or through gradual or sudden loss of pressure.

In order to ensure the proper functioning of the TSS system in many different driving situations, the components are tested on a high-speed racetrack. In addition to the enormously high centrifugal forces on the TSS sensors, signal transmission between the TSS tyre electronics, antenna and control unit must meet the highest demands.

Vredestein Fits One Millionth Space Master

Vredestein Banden recently achieved a major milestone by fitting its 1,000,000th Vredestein Space Master spare tyre, supplying the tyre to Audi for use in the Audi A6 All Road. Vredestein has been using the existing fitting machine for Space Master spare tyres since 2002. The company expects that the next milestone, namely 2,000,000 Space Master spare tyres, will be reached considerably more quickly, given the huge demand from the auto industry.

Thanks to the rise in the large number of SUV and 4×4 models in particular, the popularity of Vredestein’s Space Master spare tyres has grown enormously over the past few years, with many manufacturers opting for the Space Master and the high quality and level of service offered by Vredestein.

The Audi Q7 is the most recent model to be delivered with Vredestein’s Space Master. The Q7 has proven to be an exceptional success and the percentage of Space Master spare tyres fitted in Audi’s SUV is so high that Vredestein has to pull out all the stops in its production and installation processes in order to meet the huge demand.

Kingsway Orders New Van Fleet

East of England specialist Kingsway Tyres is making tracks for an all Mercedes-Benz fleet of vans. The firm has bought 10 Long-bodied Sprinter 311CDIs already this year, and now plans to convert its entire fleet of nearly 100 vans. Kingsway Tyres previously ran Mercedes vehicles, but then bought a number of vans from a rival manufacturer. It has now gone back to Boston dealer H and L Garages with a series of orders for high-roofed Sprinter vans and Sprinter chassis cabs fitted with dropside bodies by McComb Coachworks in Lincolnshire.

Kingsway Tyres offers a repair and replacement service for all kinds of vehicle tyres. A subsidiary of Bridgestone Tyres, it has a main base in Stamford plus 17 depots across the east of England; all of the vehicles are commissioned and fitted out at its Peterborough depot.

Continental Commended in Product Honours

Continental’s PremiumContact 2 tyre has been awarded a commendation by Auto Express, describing it as: “Among the best in the wet, particularly curved aquaplaning, and managed unlike most rain masters, to match that in the dry and in rolling resistance tests.”

Peter Robb, product manager at Continental said; “We are delighted to have been commended by Auto Express. The ContiPremiumContact 2 is a popular choice with car manufacturers as an original equipment fitting to their latest generation cars. This test result is proof of its outstanding performance. ”

The tyre is approved for the Mercedes-Benz C Class, the Audi A5, the Fiat Bravo, and Toyota Auris among many others. There is also a self supporting runflat version that has just been approved for the BMW 1 and 3 series.

The ContiPremiumContact 2 was a “best buy” recommendation for Which?’s 205/55 R16 V test in the leading magazines February issue. And this is not the first time that Continental has been commended in the Auto Express product honours after 2006 success with the ContiEcoContact 3 for supermini and city cars.

Continental Extends DaimlerChrysler Supply

Continental is now equipping further high-class vehicles at DaimlerChrysler with tyres. Germany’s leading tyre manufacturer has recently been awarded the contract to factory fit a share of all models in the new Mercedes- Benz C Class.
