“December’s figures round off what has been a disappointing year for Powered Two Wheeler registrations. Whilst models such as adventure, naked and road sport saw an increase on 2022 figures, it appears that uncertainty around the economy and supply chain issues have had a considerable impact on registrations throughout 2023,” says Symon Cook, Head of National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) commenting on the latest MCIA registration figures.
The latest Motorcycle Industry Association’s (MCIA) registration figures show the overall Power-Two-Wheeler (PTW) market was down 36.7 per cent in January. A total of 2,312 fewer units were sold compared to the same period last year. With much of the UK plunged into further Covid-related restrictions from January, the “weariness of the marketplace” may have contributed to the drop in motorcycle and scooter sales, respectively down -43 per cent and -22 per cent.
Commenting on the fifth consecutive month of decline in the UK motorcycle market, the head of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) referred to the market in 2017 as “dire.” According to figures released by the Motorcycle Industry Association, registrations in May fell by -10.5 per cent year-on-year, with the overall number of bikes being sold year-to-date down to 7,335, a reduction of -14.1 per cent.

Figures from the Motor Cycle Industry Association show that UK registrations for 2015 were the highest for 33 years. “Consumer confidence and a stronger economy are just a few of the factors that contributed to boosted motorcycle registrations in 2015”, said Stephen Latham, head of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) which represents motorcycle retailers across the UK.
Upon announcing its projected figures for new registrations in the UK this year, the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA) has voiced the expectation that the return to growth seen in 2014 will continue. “We estimate around 109,990 units will be sold during 2015, which is a similar growth rate to the one we enjoyed in 2014 – around ten per cent,” commented MCIA CEO Steve Kenward. “With Motorcycle Live attendance up ten per cent too, and growth every single month during 2014, we feel confident we have turned a corner.
